Philosophers Idea of the body and soul

Thomas Aquinas He maintains that the soul is the form of the body,
the bridge between the corporeal and incorporeal
worlds, and the first act of the body
Plato any soul is individual and immortal and is born many
times. Its union with a body is called 'birth' and its
separation from its 'death'. Therefore, the soul not
only survives after death, but also exists before birth.
Plato uses various arguments in order to prove these.
Aristotle A soul, Aristotle says, is “the actuality of a body that
has life,” where life means the capacity for self-
sustenance, growth, and reproduction. If one regards
a living substance as a composite of matter and form,
then the soul is the form of a natural
St. Augustine of Hippo soul as a “rider” on the body, making clear the split
between the material and the immaterial, with the
soul representing the “true” person. However,
although body and soul were separate, it was not
possible to conceive of a soul without its body.
Rene Descartes considered the body and the soul to be ontologically
separate but interacting entities, each with its own
particular attributes. He then sought to specify both
their mode and site of interaction; the latter he
deduced to be the pineal gland.
Gabriel Marcel people's relationships to their own bodies are not one
of typical “ownership,” and so the fact of human
embodiment presents a difficulty for any philosophy,
such as Cartesianism, that wishes to place the fact of
embodiment in doubt
