The document summarizes key differences between young language learners and adult learners. Young learners learn a language due to external pressures like parents or school, while adults choose to learn by their own will. Teaching methods also differ as young learners need engagement through fun activities, while adults prefer logic-based learning. The document also provides an example writing activity for students ages 12-14 on their favorite animal. It includes a warmup game, pre-writing brainstorming using a word web template, writing a 150-200 word essay, and ending with a drawing activity.

What are the differences between the young language learner and the
adult learner in terms of language development? (Word limit 300)

Young learner and adult learners are vastly different in their approaches towards a
language and also their understanding towards the same. We usually use a different
teaching technique with young learners as compared to adults as their way, reasoning
and priority towards learning a language is different than one another, with adults, you
may be able to use a lot of logic and pre requisite knowledge that they may have, there
may not be any need for ‘fun’ activities as usually adults view it as a waste of time
instead of stimulating, while on the other hand, a rigid and strict teaching approach may
not work well with most young learners as they need stimulation through fun activities
to learn a concept, their retention happens only when they are stimulated and
motivated enough. Both types of learners have their own pros and cons and teachers
should equip themselves with strategies with both kind of groups effectively.
Following are some key differentiators between the two: -

Young Learners Adult Learners

Learning a language happens due to peer Learning a language happens due to a

Learning pace slow. Learning pace comparatively fast.

These were the key differentiators which I have seen in my teaching experience with
both young and adult learners.
