When I injured my back I had to take a break from my running career. I decided to introduce
more women to the sport, to show them how much fun it can be and to give them the confidence
to get out and run.
I decided to start a running club for women in my area because I was annoyed by the attitude
of many race organizers. They complain about the lack of women in the sport but also use this as
an excuse for not providing separate changing facilities.
I put up posters and 40 women, young and old, fit and unfit, joined. All of them were
attracted by the idea of losing weight but I don't think they had really thought about running before.
When or if they did, they had a picture of painful training. They didn't think of chatting and smiling
while running in beautiful places, like by a river.
At first they ran for only a minute - now they can run for thirty minutes. They’ve also learned
from other runners about diet and keeping fit in general.
I wanted to do something for women’s running and I’ve had so much pleasure watching
their progress - almost as much as they’ve had themselves.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 50.
If food is allowed to stand for some time, it putrefies. When the putrefied material is
examined microscopically, it is found to be teeming with bacteria. Where do these bacteria come
from, since they are not seen in fresh food? Even until the mid-nineteenth Line century, many
people believed that such microorganisms originated by spontaneous generation, a hypothetical
process by which living organisms develop from nonliving matter.
The most powerful opponent of the theory of spontaneous generation was the French
chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895). Pasteur showed that structures present in
air closely resemble the microorganisms seen in putrefying materials. He did this by passing air
through guncotton filters, the fibers of which stop solid particles. After the guncotton was
dissolved in a mixture of alcohol and ether, the particles that it had trapped fell to the bottom of
the liquid and were examined on a microscope slide. Pasteur found that in ordinary air these exists
a variety of solid structures ranging in size from 0.01 mm to more than 1. 0mm. Many of these
bodies resembled the reproductive structures of common molds, single-celled animals, and various
other microbial cells. As many as 20 to 30 of them were found in fifteen liters of ordinary air, and
they could not be distinguished from the organisms found in much larger numbers in putrefying
materials. Pasteur concluded that the organisms found in putrefying materials originated from the
organized bodies present in the air. He postulated that these bodies are constantly being deposited
on all objects.
Pasteur showed that if a nutrient solution was sealed in a glass flask and heated to boiling
to destroy all the living organisms contaminating it, it never putrefied. The proponents of
spontaneous generation declared that fresh air was necessary for spontaneous generation and that
the air inside the sealed flask was affected in some way by heating so that it would no longer
support spontaneous generation. Pasteur constructed a swan-necked flask in which putrefying
materials could be heated to boiling, but air could reenter. The bends in the neck prevented
microorganisms from getting in the flask. Material sterilized in such a flask did not putrefy.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Choosing a career may be one of the hardest jobs you ever have, and it must be done with
care. View a career as an opportunity to do something you love, not simply as a way to earn a
living. Investing the time and effort to thoroughly explore your options can mean the difference
between finding a stimulating and rewarding career and moving from job to unsatisfying job in an
attempt to find the right one. Work influences virtually every aspect of your life, from your choice
of friends to where you live. Here are just a few of the factors to consider.
Deciding what matters most to you is essential to making the right decision. You may want
to begin by assessing your likes, dislikes, strengths,
and weaknesses. Think about the classes, hobbies, and surroundings that you find most appealing.
Ask yourself questions, such as “Would you like to travel? Do you want to work with children?
Are you more suited to solitary or cooperative work?” There are no right or wrong answers; only
you know what is important to you, determine which job features you require, which ones you
would prefer, and which ones you cannot accept. Then rank them in order of importance to you.
The setting of the job is one factor to take into account. You may not want to sit at a desk
all day. If not there are diverse occupations - building inspector, supervisor, real estate agent - that
involve a great deal of time awạy from the office. Geographical location may be a concern, and
employment in some fields is concentrated in certain regions. Advertising jobs can generally be
found only in large cities. On the other hand, many industries such as hospitality, law education,
and retail sales are found in all regions of the country.
If a high salary is important to you, do not judge a career by its starting wages. Many jobs,
such as insurance sales, offer relatively low starting salaries; however, pay substantially increases
along with your experience, additional training, promotions and commission.
Don’t rule out any occupation without learning more about it. Some industries evoke positive or
negative associations. The traveling life of a flight attendant appears glamorous, while that of a
plumber does not. Remember that many jobs are not what they appear to be at first, and may have
merits or demerits that are less obvious. Flight attendants must work long, grueling hours without
sleeps, whereas plumbers can be as highly paid as some doctors. Another point to consider is that
as you mature, you will likely develop new interests and skills that may point the way to new
opportunities. The choice you make today need not be your final one.

In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America and
Europe, recycling is big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways
to be sensitive to the environment. Recycling means finding was to use products a second time.
The motto of the recycling movement is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs,
boxes and expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of
packaging: usually paper, a box, and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should
try to buy things that are wrapped simply, and to reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce
waste is to buy high- quality products. When low quality appliances break, many customers throw
them away and buy new ones - a loss of more resources and more energy. For example, if a
customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, the manufacturer receives an
important message. In the same way if a customer chooses a product with less packaging, that
customer sends an important message to the manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throwaway
must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles.
After customers empty the bottles, they return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks
collect the bottles, wash them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new
bottles is saved. In some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice. In
those places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles.
The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be
cleaned and used again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy
to make one aluminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect
and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they help save one of the world's precious resources.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Many explanations are given for the fact that men die earlier than women. Men are stronger
physically, yet women can hang on longer to life. Both men and women are emotional creatures
but women are not afraid or ashamed to cry while men refuse to do so. They are afraid of being
thought "soft". Some men, when they are upset, play loud music or dig in the garden to relieve
their feelings. Many men like an orderly life so that they bury themselves in their work or want a
wife with some children or long to take part in wars where there is a definite chain of command.
There is a leader to give orders and a known enemy to fight against and defeat. All these make
men feel they live in a rational world.
So the majority of men like a rational world. Rationality is fine but it does not include
everything that makes life joyful and fun or even messy and frustrating. When a man refuses to
cry he is refusing to accept that his emotions are part of him. Of course some men do not follow
this pattern. Bob Hawke is capable of crying in public whereas Margaret Thatcher is probably
incapable of crying at any time.
We need to cry because that shows our ability to suffer. If we do not suffer we are not really
alive at all. Suffering can be creative or destructive. If we can all learn to cry and laugh and shout
and dance openly, we are living creatively and adding something to the human race. We often say
men suffer more from stress and therefore they die earlier. Are we not saying in another way that
they do not know how to suffer in the right way – with tears and laughter instead of silence – and
so they are miserable and just give up?
36. What question does the passage discuss?
A. Why men like a rational world
B. Why women are more emotional than men

D. Why men die earlier than women

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Some animal behaviorists argue that certain animals can remember past events, anticipate
future ones, make plans and choices, and coordinate activities within a group. These scientists,
however, are cautious about the extent to which animals can be credited with conscious processing.
Explanations of animal behavior that leave out any sort of consciousness at all and ascribe
actions entirely to instinct leave many questions unanswered. One example of such unexplained
behavior: Honeybees communicate the sources of nectar to one another by doing a dance in a
figure-eight pattern. The orientation of the dance conveys the position of the food relative to the
sun’s position in the sky, and the speed of the dance tells how far the food source is from the hive.
Most researchers assume that the ability to perform and encode the dance is innate and shows no
special intelligence. But in one study, when experimenters kept changing the site of the food
source, each time moving the food 25 percent farther from the previous site, foraging honeybees
began to anticipate where the food source would appear next. When the researchers arrived at the
new location, they would find the bees circling the spot, waiting for their food. No one
has yet explained how bees whose brains weigh four ten-thousandths of an ounce, could have
inferred the location of the new site.
Other behaviors that may indicate the same cognition include toll use. Many animals, like
the otter who uses a stone to crack mussel shells, are capable of using objects in the natural
environment as rudimentary tools. One researcher has found that mother chimpanzees
occasionally show their young how to use tools to open hard nuts. In one study, chimpanzees
compared two pairs of food wells containing chocolate chips and three chips. Allowed to choose
which pair they wanted, the chimpanzees almost always chose the one with the higher total,
showing some sort of summing ability. Other chimpanzees have learned to use numerals to label
quantities of items and do simple sums.
43. Which of the following is NOT discussed as an ability animals are thought to have?
A. Communicating emotions B. Remembering past experiences
C. Selecting among choices D. Anticipating events to come
44. What is the purpose of the honeybee at a site?
A. To determine the quality of food at a site
B. To increase the speed of travel to food sources
C. To identify the type of nectar that is available
D. To communicate the location of food
45. What did researchers discover in the study of honeybees discussed in paragraph 2?
A. Bees are able to travel at greater speeds than scientists thought
B. The bees were able to determine in advance where scientists would place their food.
C. Changing the location of food caused bees to decrease their dance activity:
D. The bees could travel 25% farther than scientists expected.

Sod houses are an almost vanished part of America's past. Yet in Nebraska and some other
states a century ago they were very common. Sod houses were built, as the name suggests, from
sod - the top, grassy layer of the ground. The ground of the Nebraska plains was particularly
suitable for this, because it was held together by the thick wiry roots of the grass that grows there.
To make a house, the settlers used a sod-cutter, drawn by horses, that cut through the top
layer of the grassland. This had the additional benefit that the land cleared of grass in this way was
suitable for planting corn. The builders would then cut the top layer they had ploughed into sections
of about 50kg each, clearing about two acres of grass in the process. These sections were stacked
on top of each other to make a thick-walled house that was cool in summer and warm in winter.
Because many were built into the side of hills for extra stability, they were even useful shelters
from tornadoes.
Sod houses spread across Nebraska, Kansas and North and South Dakota. They were
common there, because all these areas had the same problem - there were no trees on the great
plains, and so no wood to build with. Wood which was needed for the roofs was by far the most
expensive part of each house, as it had to be painfully transported by wagon. The problem of
building materials was solved by the arrival of the railways which could transport wood and other
materials quickly and cheaply. Sod houses were abandoned for more modern buildings, and began
to disappear. Now less than 100 remain, but they are carefully preserved as relics of pioneer life
on the prairie.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Of all modem instruments, the violin is apparently one of the simplest. It consists in essence
of a hollow, varnished wooden sound box, or resonator, and a long neck covered with a
fingerboard, along which four strings are stretched at high tension. The beauty of design, shape,
and decoration is no accident; the proportions of the instrument are determined entirely by
acoustical considerations. Its simplicity of appearance is deceptive. About 70 parts are invoked in
the construction of a violin. Its tone and its outstanding range of expressiveness make it an ideal
solo instrument. No less important however, is its role as an orchestral and chamber instrument in
combination with the larger and deeper-sounding members of the same family, the violins form
the nucleus of the modern symphony orchestra.
The violin has been in existence since about 1550. Its importance as an instrument in its
own right dates from the early 1600's, when it first became standard in Italian opera orchestras. Its
stature as an orchestral instrument was raised further when in 1626 Louis XIII of France
established at his court the orchestra known as Les vingt-quatre violins du Roy (The King's 24
Violins), which was to become widely famous later in the century. In its early history, the violin
had a dull and rather quiet tone resulting from the fact that the strings were thick and were attached
to the body of the instrument very loosely.
During the eighteenth and nineteenth century exciting technical changes were inspired by
such composer-violinists as Vivaldi and Tartini. Their instrumental compositions demanded a
fuller, clearer, and more brilliant tone that was produced by using thinner strings and a far higher
string tension. Small changes had to be made to the violin's internal structure and to the fingerboard
so that they could withstand the extra strain. Accordingly, a higher standard of performance was
achieved, in terms of both facility and interpretation. Left-hand technique was considerably
elaborated; and new fingering patterns on the fingerboard were developed for very high notes.
43. “The King’s 24 Violins” is mentioned in the second paragraph to illustrate ________.

Telecommuting is some form of computer communication between employees ’ homes and
offices. For employees whose job involves sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or
typing reports, the location of the computer is of no consequence. If the machine can communicate
over telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office computer and
transmit the material to their employers. A recent survey in USA Today estimates that there are
approximately 8,7 million telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising annually, the trend
does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business Week published “The Portable
Executive” as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn’t telecommuting become more popular?
Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance on the
part of many managers. These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large
workforce scattered across the country would be too difficult, or, at least, systems for managing
them are not yet developed, thereby complicating the manager’s responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are reluctant to
accept the opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular interaction with à group, and many
are concerned that they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more
visible in the office setting. Some people feel that even when a space in their homes is set aside as

the correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 45.
Sometimes you know things about people the first time you see them, for example, that you
want to be friends with them or that you don’t trust them. But perhaps this kind of intuition isn’t
as hard to explain as it may seem. For instance, people give out body language signals all the time.
The way you hold your body, head and arms tells people about your mood. If you hold your arms
tightly at your sides, or fold them across your chest, people will generally feel that you are being
defensive. Holding your head to one side shows interest in the other, while an essay, open posture
indicates that you are self-confident. All this affects the way you feel about someone.
Also, a stranger may remind you of a meeting with someone. This may be because of
something as simple as the fact that he or she is physically similar to someone who treated you
well or badly. Your feelings about a stranger could be influenced by a smell in the air that brings
to mind a place where you were happy as a child. Since even a single word can bring back a
memory such as that, you may never realize it is happening.

A. Meanings of signals one implies towards a stranger.
B. Factors that may influence one’s feelings about a stranger.

One of the most interesting authors of the twentieth century, J.R.R Tolkien, achieved fame
through his highly inventive trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Born in 1892, Tolkien received his
education from Oxford and then served in World War I. After the war, he became a professor of
Anglo Saxon and English language and literature at Oxford University.
Although published in 1965, the three books that comprise The Lord of the Rings were
written in intervals from 1936 to 1949. This was mainly due to Tolkien's responsibilities as a
professor and the outbreak of World War II. By the late 1960s, this fascinating trilogy had become
a sociological phenomenon as young people intently studied the mythology and legends created
by Tolkien.
The trilogy is remarkable not only for its highly developed account of historical fiction but
also its success as a modern heroic epic. The main plot describes the struggle between good and
evil kingdom as they try to acquire a magic ring that has the power to rule the world. The novels,
which are set in a time called Middle Earth, describe a detailed fantasy world. Established before
humans populated the Earth, Middle Earth was inhabited by good and evil creatures such as
hobbits, elves, monsters, wizards, and some humans. The characters and the setting of Middle
Earth were modeled after mythological stories from Greece and Northern Europe.
Although readers have scrutinized the texts for inner meaning and have tried to connect the
trilogy with Tolkien's real life experiences in England during World War II, he denied the
connection. He claims that the story began in his years as an undergraduate student and grew out
of his desire to create mythology and legends about elves and their language.
Tolkien was a masterful fantasy novelist who used his extensive knowledge of folklore to
create a body of work that is still read and enjoyed throughout the world today.
46. What can we assume is NOT true about Middle Earth?

D. People dominated Middle Earth

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 50.
The first two decades of the 20th century were dominated by the microbe hunters. These
hunters had tracked down one after another of the microbes responsible for the most dreaded
scourges of many centuries: tuberculosis, cholera, diphtheria. But there remained some terrible
diseases for which no microbe could be incriminated: scurvy, pellagra, rickets, beriberi. Then it
was discovered that these diseases were caused by the lack of vitamin, a trace substance in the diet.
The diseases could be prevented or cured by consuming foods that contained the vitamins. And so
in the decades of the 1920’s and 1930’s, nutrition became a science and the vitamin hunters
replaced the microbe hunters.
In the 1940’s and 1950’s, biochemists strived to learn why each of the vitamins was
essential for health. They discovered that key enzymes in metabolism-depend on one or another
of the vitamins as coenzymes to perform the chemistry that provides cells with energy for growth
and function. Now, these enzymes hunters occupied center stage.
You are aware that the enzyme hunters have been replaced by a new breed of hunters who
are hacking genes - the blueprints for each of the enzymes - and are discovering the defective genes
that cause inherited diseases - diabetes, cystic fibrosis. These gene hunters, or genetic engineers,
use recombinant DNA technology to identify and clone genes and introduce them into bacterial
cells and plants, to create factories for the massive production of hormones and vaccines for
medicine and for better crops for agriculture. Biotechnology has become a multibillion-dollar
industry.
In view of the inexorable progress in science, we can expect that the gene hunters will be
replaced in the spotlight. When and by whom? Which kind of hunter will dominate the scene in
the last decade of our warning century and in the early decades of the next? I wonder whether the
hunters who will occupy the spotlight will be neurobiologists who apply the techniques of die
enzyme and gene hunters to the functions of the brain. What to call them? The head hunters. I will
return to them later.

the correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 50.
A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of
the world’s largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake
Vostok, this huge body of water is
located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is able to exist
in its unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat
from the earth's core. The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates ä from the frigid
temperatures on the surface.
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial
survey of the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body
of water of indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite
made scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar detected an
extremely flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake.
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the
scientific community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have
survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and
elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organisms in more exposed areas. The downside of the
discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate
and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without
actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are looking for possible ways to accomplish
this.

Most people go to a doctor in their own town or suburbs. But people in the
Australian outback can't get to a doctor quickly. The nearest doctor is sometimes hundreds of
kilometers away so they have to call him on a two-way radio. This special doctor is called the
"flying doctor". He visits sick people by plane.
When someone is sick, the doctor has to fly to the person's home. His plane lands on a flat
piece of ground near the person's house. Sometimes the doctor has to take the patient to hospital.
Flying doctors take about 8,600 people to hospital each year.
However, most of the time the person isn't very sick, and the doctor doesn't have to visit.
He can give advice on the radio from the office at the flying doctor center. He can tell the patient
to use some medicine from a special medicine chest. There is one of these chests in every home
in the outback. Each bottle, tube and packet in the chest has a number. The doctor often says
something like this, "Take two tablets from bottle number 5 every four hours."

One of the most convenient and cheapest ways to see America is by riding a Greyhound bus. This
interstate bus system connects all major cities in the United States providing them with frequent
and convenient service. The bus system even has an international service which connects the
Canadian cities of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal to the Continental United States. At the
southern border Greyhound also makes connection with dries in Mexico.
It’s network even extends to some of the smaller towns and out-of-the- way communities in
the great expanse of the country. Traveling by bus may take longer than flying by plane, but the
terminals are located in the center of most dries and there is easy access to the downtown area. At
night these terminals are carefully supervised and patrolled by security guards so as to guarantee
safety. If a person in the terminal cannot produce an ongoing ticket to another destination, he will
be required to leave. The purpose of this policy is to safeguard the security of passengers and
discourage beggars from loitering around the premises. Some terminals in major cities are opened
around the clock, while others may dose after midnight and open again in the morning.
Greyhound also offers a variety of discount fares for the cross-country travelers who may
like to visit many places across the continent. For them there is the Ameripass. This pass is
designed for budget travelers and can be a great saving over the regular fore. This pass can be
purchased for periods from as short as one week to as long as thirty days. It enables the traveler to
visit any city along the Greyhound route within the purchased time limit. What is being purchased,
therefore, is not distance but time.
These buses are comfortable and air-conditioned. They are all equipped with toilets in the
rear to add to the convenience of the passengers but there are some very severe rules of conduct
which are strictly enforced. On all buses smoking is prohibited and die consumption of alcoholic
beverages is not allowed. For those passengers who use a pocket-sized stereo like a Walkman
transistor for personal entertainment, the law requires that the volume he turned down so as not to
disturb the other passengers.
The drivers are well-trained, very courteous and professional and always introduce
themselves at the beginning of their route. They stop frequently along the journey to permit
smokers to grab a quick cigarette or for other to pick up a snack at a fast food restaurant
Although bus travel may not be suited to everyone’s taste, it affords budget travelers and
backpackers the chance to see America in comfort and safety and at a leisurely unhurried pace.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the American educational system
was desperately in need of reform. Private schools existed, but only for the very rich. There were
very few public schools because of the strong sentiment that children who would grow up to be
laborers should not “waste” their time on education but should instead prepare themselves for
their life’s work. It was in the face of this public sentiment that educational reformers set about
their task. Horace Mann, probably the most famous of the reformers, felt that there was no excuse
in a republic for any citizen to be uneducated. As Superintendent of Education in the state of
Massachusetts from 1837 to 1848, he initiated various changes, which were soon matched in other
school districts around the country. He extended the school year from five to six months and
improved the quality of teachers by instituting teacher education and raising teacher salaries.
