Release notes
December 2020
Node firmware package 11.x requires OneFS 9.0.0.0 or later. All previous firmware packages are compatible with OneFS 9.0.0.0.

The firmware package is available for download from Dell EMC Product Support. Follow the instructions in this guide to update
the firmware.
NOTE: It is recommended that you open a service request (SR) with . If you require assistance with the node firmware
update, an open SR reduces the response time.

Supported platforms
Before you update the firmware package, confirm that the cluster supports the new firmware. OneFS 9.0.0.0 or later is required
for NFP 11.x.
The firmware package is compatible with Generation 5, Generation 6, and PowerScale nodes (F200 and F600) that are running
OneFS 9.0.0.0 and later.

Confirming free space

Before you upgrade the node firmware package, ensure that there is enough free space available for the node firmware binaries.
Approximately 100 MB of free space in /var is required on each node.

Resolved issues

Incorrect isi_upgrade_logs report

The report that is generated from the isi_upgrade_logs command might be incorrect. The command also disrupts the firmware
upgrade flow, where --get-fw-report is used to read the next set of nodes after an upgrade. The issue is fixed in OneFS 9.1.0.0.
● Support one IPMI command to enable IPV4/6 and UEFI PXE as first boot order automatically.
● Preserve BIOS setup setting (IPV4/IPV6/Block HBA PXE OPROM/Launch PXE OPROM), the boot option, and boot order
for manual when updating the BIOS.
● Turn on IPv6 feature and change the default to disabled in Infinity BIOS.
● BIOS shall support new IPMI command to enable, disable and query UEFI PXE IPV4 and IPV6.
● Update ePOST to 22.09, and 28.09.
● BIOS Security fixes for F200 and F600 nodes.

Known issues
There are no known issues affecting PowerScale F200, or F600 nodes.

Firmware versions
The following table lists the firmware versions included in the firmware package. NFP 11.x requires OneFS 9.0.0.0 and later
software.
The non-rev locked firmware is controlled by component manufacturing, and is not included in the PowerScale Non-Disruptive
Upgrade (NDU) process.

Upgrade considerations
Before you begin a firmware upgrade, be aware of the impact the upgrade process has on cluster operations.
Each node is upgraded individually, and is automatically restarted when the upgrade is complete. The time taken for upgrade is
reduced substantially by using the simultaneous upgrade feature. Simultaneous firmware upgrades update the cluster firmware
in less time than rolling upgrades. However, there is slightly more risk for disruption during the upgrade.
NOTE: If there is a partial cluster upgrade, the system generates an alert notification indicating that a firmware upgrade has
not been applied.

Run a firmware assessment

Run the firmware assessment, and use the recommended firmware upgrade command until all nodes are fully upgraded. The
firmware framework uses the upgrade logs for firmware assessments and upgrades. It uses metadata to summarize data
gathered by isi_upgrade_logs. The report provides a description of the metadata.

The NFP must be in the /ifs directory.

1. Run an assessment:

isi upgrade firmware assess --fw-pkg=/ifs/<path to NFP>/IsiFw_Package_v11.1.tar

2. To see the results, obtain the report:

isi_upgrade_logs --get-fw-report

The assessment might take an extended amount of time to complete based on cluster size, activity, platform types, and so
on.

Upgrade the firmware

Upgrade nodes to the current firmware package.
To determine which nodes require upgrading, view the firmware assessment report. For instructions on completing the
assessment and report, see the Run a firmware assessment section in this Release Notes.
The firmware framework uses the upgrade logs for firmware assessments and upgrades. It uses metadata to summarize data
gathered by isi_upgrade_logs. The report provides a description of the metadata. The NFP must be in the /ifs directory.
1. Follow the recommendations in the firmware assessment report.
2. To upgrade the nodes to the current firmware package, run the following command:

isi upgrade cluster firmware start --fw-pkg=<path to nfp> --nodes-to-upgrade=<node

number>

3. To check the progress of the firmware upgrade, run the following command at any time:

isi upgrade cluster nodes firmware progress list

4. When the upgrade completes, view the firmware assessment report, and repeat steps 2 and 3 on any nodes that are still
needing an update.

Perform a simultaneous firmware upgrade

OneFS 8.2 and later introduces the simultaneous firmware upgrade. The simultaneous firmware upgrade provides the ability to
upgrade multiple nodes at one time.
Complete the firmware assessment, and obtain the report before continuing to upgrade the firmware package. For instructions
on completing the assessment and report, see the Run a firmware assessment section in this Release Notes.
1. Follow the recommendations in the firmware assessment report.
2. Run the upgrade on multiple nodes simultaneously, by including the --simultaneous option, and specifying the node
numbers separated by commas. For example, nodes to upgrade=1,2,3,4:

isi upgrade cluster firmware start --no-verify --simultaneous --nodes-to-

upgrade=<node numbers>

3. To check the progress of the firmware upgrade at any time, run the following command:

isi upgrade cluster nodes firmware progress list

Verify the firmware installation

The firmware upgrade is considered verified when isi_upgrade_logs --get-fw-report does not list that any upgrades
are needed.
