Cable Tray Sizing Calculations

This document provides guidelines for sizing cable trays. Cable trays should be sized based on the current and future expected cable load, cable type, and allowable cable fill ratios specified in tables 392.9, 392.9(E), 392.9(F), and 392.10(A) of the National Electrical Code. The guidelines cover considerations for the weight and number of cables, space for future expansion, segregating cable types, bundling multicore cables, and using formulas to calculate the required cable tray width based on cable cross-sectional areas and counts.

1 General

This document covers the general guidelines for cable tray sizing.

2 Purpose

The purpose of this document is to provide the general guideline for cable tray sizing.

3 Cable tray size

The cable tray shall be sized by taking the following into consideration
a) Weight of cables
b) Future expansion
c) Cable type
d) Allowable cable fill
The following lines will cover the mentioned points in detail.
a) Weight of the cables
 Cable tray shall be sized according to the number of cables installed and
weight loading, with allowance of maximum density.
 The usual value for load capacity is 15kg/m for 100 mm width.
b) Future expansion
 Space for future expansion shall be considered in cable tray sizing
c) Cable type
 HV cables shall be segregated from LV cables
 A multi-core cables on trays may be bunched in a maximum of two layers
d) Allowable cable fill
 NEC 392 tables 392.9, table 392.9(E), table 392.9(F), and table 392.10 (A),
define the allowable fill area.
e) Formula
 The width of the cable tray could be given by the following formula
 Cable tray width = Cross sectional area of the conductors x Number of cables

The calculated cable tray width is compared with the mentioned allowable cable fill table and
the size of the tray is selected accordingly.
