Executive Summary

The report provides a detailed look into Marriott International's environmental policy development
practices using their 2020 SERVE 360 report and compares it to the Global Reporting Initiatives, which
are the recommended standards. It is through this report that we will assess whether the company has
environmental policies aimed at sustainable development. The report shows that Marriott International
has done comparatively well in sustainable development with the areas for improvement mentioned.

2
1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose
The report looks at Marriott International, or Marriott, and how it has implemented sustainable practices.
The main goal will be to see if Marriott has implemented sustainable initiatives and operations, as well
as how they have impacted the company's social and economic aspects. The Marriott Sustainability
and Social Performance Report will be examined in order to draw conclusions and demonstrate how
the company has addressed sustainability issues, either successfully or unsuccessfully. The report also
looks at the challenges that the tourism and hospitality industry faces in achieving its long-term
development objectives.
1.2 Background
Environmental sustainability has gotten a lot of attention in the hospitality and tourism industry over the
last two decades. The hospitality industry has taken a step back and taken sustainability issues
seriously, as there are ongoing discussions about environmental sustainability around the world.
Sustainable development, according to Williams and Ponsford (2009), is defined as meeting current
needs without jeopardizing future generations' ability to meet their own. Sustainable development has
become more widely practiced, and issues related to sustainability are now a major part of many
countries' socio-political debates (Porter & Kramer, 2011). Because there is such a strong demand for
sustainable development, businesses are compelled to include all stakeholders in the decision-making
process.

The tourism and hospitality industry, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization
(2015), is one of the largest sectors of the global economy, accounting for more than 10% of global
GDP. It has resulted in the creation of numerous jobs, making it one of the most important employment
sectors. According to the study, it has nearly surpassed sectors like manufacturing, retail, and
agriculture, which were previously the leading sectors.

Despite its success, however, the sector has a significant impact on the path to more sustainable
development. He was tasked with reducing the negative consequences of his programs for future
generations. Hotels must now publish corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports detailing their
actions and behaviors in relation to sustainability (Ramirez, 2012). This paper will evaluate Marriott's
2020 SERVE 360 Report, highlighting topics and objectives not included in the report.

3
2. Sustainable practices being implemented by Marriott
2.1 Environmental Initiatives (refer to Appendix)
 Energy: The report shows that in order to reduce energy consumption, Marriott will invest in
renewable energy systems through the use of renewable energy sources with low carbon
content.

 Emissions: In terms of emissions, the report shows that the organization has reduced carbon
emissions by using renewable energy systems. Carbon offset programs have been integrated
into the hotel's operations to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company can control
the supply of electricity during peak and off-peak periods by using these programs.

 Water: Marriott has looked at ways to reduce water consumption in some of its properties.
They've put in leak detectors and programs that constantly assess water efficiency.

 Biodiversity: On the issue of biodiversity, the hotel has distinguished two critical components to
help its interests in natural capital and take part in ecological supportability projects. The main
component they have recognized is to connect all partners in protection projects. One more
basic part is lodgings that have assisted with the preservation and reclamation of homes.

 Wastes & Effluents: The Company aims to reduce total waste to almost zero in terms of waste
and effluents. By operating a waste classification facility, they have used recycling practices and
other waste reduction methods to help reduce their waste. The hotel donated unused food to the
needy by reducing food waste. Feed scraps and compost were used to feed the animals.

 Supplier Environmental Assessment: The hotel's supply chain has always revolved around
what we refer to as "responsible markets." The company has always worked with
environmentally friendly suppliers who have followed all of the company's environmental
policies.

4
2.2 Social Initiatives (refer to Appendix)
 Employee Well-being & Engagement: The Company has taken employee well-being and
engagement very seriously because employees are pillars of a sustainable environment. When
it comes to its employees, the hotel emphasizes three aspects: health, safety, and well-being.
Marriott has included its employees in all of its sustainability initiatives, giving them the
opportunity to learn and grow. He ensured that employees worked in a safe environment, and
he promoted work-life balance. The company conducts surveys to determine employee
satisfaction with sustainable strategies and provides them with the opportunity to suggest
strategies that they believe are beneficial to sustainability.

 Diversity & Equal Opportunity: In terms of diversity and equal opportunity, the hotel ensures
that a more diverse workforce is maintained while human rights are protected. The Marriott hotel
has put a greater emphasis on assisting women and minorities. The second component is that
society has put in place practices and policies that are linked to raising awareness and
protecting human rights among its stakeholders.

 Welfare Community: A community commitment to projects as well as participation in

international sustainability programs are all part of the Welfare community. One is to encourage
children's environmental education as well as employee volunteerism in the development of
skills. The hotel has also partnered with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to help the
less fortunate through donations to international projects and fundraising. The company is very
concerned about the well-being of society and has done everything possible to improve the
community's quality of life.

 Economic Well-being: In terms of economic well-being, the company recognizes that

promoting the economic well-being of its employees and the community requires a long-term,
policy-based approach. The company promotes the economic well-being of its stakeholders by
employing several people and indirectly employing others such as vial suppliers and promoters.
Even if internships and apprenticeship programs are aimed at emancipating disadvantaged
women and people, there are job opportunities. They provide attractive young people from all
over the world with internships and apprenticeship programs. The hotel claims to have women's
empowerment programs that will help women achieve economic independence. The company
has also adhered to anti-corruption policies, enforcing policies and laws to ensure high integrity
and ethics with all of the companies with which it does business.

Employee
Retention satisfied and retained. Even though retirement benefits exist,
they must be considered so that all employees are aware of
their retirement options. To improve the well-being of all
stakeholders, they should improve their economic policies
(Marriott International, 2021).

4. Impacts
The 2020 Marriott SERVE 360 report shows that there are more positive than negative impacts for
stakeholders.

4.1 Positive Impact

The company has established foundations to support and engage with local communities as well as the
global community. Marriott contributes to international charities and participates in fundraising efforts for
social causes (Marriott International, 2021).

They've created jobs, safeguarded human rights, empowered women, and provided internships to
young people through apprenticeship programs. The company also took into account the needs of the
most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society. Marriott has developed mechanisms to reduce

6
emissions, ensuring long-term viability, which is good for environmentally sustainable development
(Marriott International, 2021).

4.2 Negative Impact

The Marriott property itself is one of the negative environmental impacts, which, if not managed
properly, can have a negative impact on the local community. This is due to the fact that it was
constructed at a time when there were no policies defining sustainability. Food prices are rising, which
has an economic impact on locals who cannot afford it, leaving them to tourists (Roos, 2010). Hotels
must develop strategies to mitigate negative impacts by minimizing the environmental, social, and
economic consequences discussed earlier in the report (Marriott International, 2021).

5. Compared to the GRI Index

As previously stated, the results show that Marriott attempted to implement policies to ensure long-term
viability. According to Appendix, Marriott follows the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI)
recommendations for environmental and social sustainability reporting, and Marriott is committed to
ensuring that its corporate social responsibility strategy meets these standards.

6. Conclusion

This report discusses how the hospitality and tourism industries can implement sustainable
development. As previously stated in this report, discussions about environmental sustainability are
ongoing, and the hospitality industry has not been left behind, taking sustainability issues seriously. As
a result, companies in this industry must take sustainability seriously so that future generations will
have something to smile about as profits are made.

used by Marriott properties to identify opportunities to improve operational
efficiency. EEAP covers a wide range of water conservation measures items
ranging from the company's linen/towel reuse policy to simple food service best
practices, housekeeping, landscaping, irrigation, HVAC, and conservation and
efficiency.
< Signature Project: Full-service, managed global properties may choose to
use a water conservation measure for their annual signature project, such as
installing low-flow toilets and shower heads, smart irrigation controls, washing
water reuse systems, and high-quality irrigation sprays, as outlined in their
energy and environmental plans.
< Integration with energy-saving measures: Many Marriott projects are
designed to conserve both energy and water. For example, upgrading cooling
towers reduces both water and energy consumption of central plants. Similarly,
upgrading water treatment equipment also improves energy efficiency and water
saving from these activities.

< Submetering: Marriott's full-service buildings in America have a standard for

water submetering for cooling towers and irrigation. These meters, when
installed, will provide a more detailed picture of water consumption and aid in the
detection of early leaks. Automatic Meter reading platforms were also installed at
buildings with high water and sewage levels, acute/chronic drought conditions,
and/or above-average irrigation consumption. The Automated Water &
Diagnostics program includes the installation of cell endpoints for irrigation and a
cooling tower water submeters. The terminals transmit water consumption data
between 15 minutes per night via cellular connect to an online diagnostic
platform with alert and reporting capability.

< Collaboration with Owners: In 2019, the Americas engineering team

continued to collaborate with owners to evaluate a variety of water conservation
projects. Water risks are managed throughout the lifecycle of properties, from
site development to construction and operations:

< Site Establishment: Marriott assesses environmental resources, conducts

feasibility studies, and considers construction choice materials during site

11
development for some hotels currently under construction. Once opened, each
managed hotel will have a water conservation action plan to manage and reduce
water consumption.

< Drought Risks: Every managed service with full services is needed for the
development of site-specific water a protection plans as well as complete audits
of the effectiveness of irrigation on their landscaped area, which Marriott can
identify other opportunities. Additional water protection measures have been
taken in response to the risks of drought immediately implemented by Marriott
affiliate properties, including reducing land irrigation.
Companions and Guests are also alerted to the lack of water to promote
additional protection. Water throughout the portfolio the risk assessment is
planned for the near future.

< Tools and Resources: As part of Marriott process of relevance and goal
setting used in the development of Serve 360 sustainability and social impact
platform, Marriott investigated Ecolab water risk data Monetizer, WRI aqueduct
tool and other tools to evaluate the performance of Marriott properties in water-
stressed regions. Their analysis has shown that the intensity of water in real
estate in these areas was generally lower than comparable hotels in other areas.
For the first time, all Marriott-managed properties around the world were given a
water reduction target for the year, which was developed within the MESH. The
target development process considers the average annual water reduction from
2016 to currently and compares the water intensity in each hotel with the water
intensity in similar hotels within the same hotel type and region. In addition, all
global franchise hotels have been given proposed water reduction targets for the
first time in 2019.
