Academic Report Term 1

Prepared: December 23, 2021

Student Name: Kabir Goel Goel

Grade: Grade 11

Dear MUWCI First-Year Students,

You made it to the end of your First Term despite the challenges which you may have faced being inducted into a
highly demanding and unique education program. Well done! As a batch, from your first day at Orientation, you
have been a confident, articulate, and engaged group. Moreover, you have embraced the MUWCI community as
wholeheartedly as it has welcomed you. As you reflect on this Term, think about how much you have grown
through the personal effort you have made to push yourself out of your comfort zone and to engage with activities
in an original way.
How has it been to see life from another person’s perspective? Do you feel that your vision of the world has
broadened with the new friends you have made? How have you embraced the theme of curiosity? Have you
challenged yourself to speak up, to try something new, to read about a topic outside your usual areas of interest, to
speak a language you never have before? How does that make you feel? These are some of the questions I hope
you will continue to reflect on during your time at MUWCI.
This has been an unusual time as we are still immersed in a pandemic while trying to navigate greater freedoms yet
remain safe and healthy. Your year group has had to face many challenges. Hopefully, it has made you stronger and
more resilient, and not bitter and defeated. Remember that no matter the situation, you also have a choice about
your attitude and approach. Now would be a good time to reflect and determine how you balance work and your
well-being. Also think about how you want to contribute to the MUWCI community in a fundamentally respectful
way. What would you like your impact to be?
The end of your First Term is a good time to make some plans about how you wish to spend the next 3 Terms at
MUWCI and to think about the objectives you had when you first applied for admission to UWCs. Think about
lessons learned from this first term and make plans to overcome some of the challenges you faced so that you can
hit the ground running in your second term. I look forward very much to continuing crucial discussions with you and
sharing different perspectives. I hope you are still enthused about this wonderful MUWCI journey you have begun.

Summary of Achievements
First Term/Third Term
Subject

Studies in Language and Literature: English SL

Ankita Tandon

This term, the students of English LAL SL studied poems by Edgar Allan Poe and multiple non-literary text types:
print ads, webpages, cartoons. They developed two different assessment styles: the critical analysis of non-literary
texts through Paper 1 and examination of a global issue through the content and form of one of the literary and
non-literary works. Kabir has a decent hold over the language, but needs to work on his analysis. It would do him
well to interact more in class and share his doubts and concerns with the teacher. He is recommended to become
more focused in the classroom and take up regular writing practice. He must make a sincere effort to revisit the
concepts taken up this term by going through his notes.

Studies in Language and Literature: Hindi (Combined Block) SL

Zeenat Ansari

In Hindi Lit students explored the conceptual understanding of the meaning and importance of literature’s role for
the societies in the past, present and future. Students inquired into the idea of and purpose of literature. Students
engaged in learning experiences relevant to language structures and patterns. Through class participation
students were assessed on their ability to understand and produce the structures and ideas of the
language. Kabir has made a great start in his study of Hindi literature. He is very responsible about the assigned
work. He has made a good beginning on his portfolio and it reflects his engagement with literature. Kabir is keen
to share his ideas with others in the class. He seems to have good language skills and seems quite familiar with
literary analysis and close reading. If his attitude towards Hindi stays the same, I am sure he will really do well in
this subject. Kabeer's practice writing tasks conducted this semester are well done, demonstrating his
understanding of the requirements of delving into the specifics of and relationships between language, culture and
identity. His organisation on the task is well thought out with beginning, middle and ending. He could further
improve on spellings. As he moves into his second term of IB I would encourage him to work a bit more on the
idiomatic part of the language. It is good to start from the general and then move to the specific by probing deeper
into the topic when it comes to vocabulary and meaning. I wish him a good winter break.

Individuals and Societies: History SL

Reid Pierce

We did a lot this term from learning about the different papers (Paper 1, 2 and 3) as well as the IA. We learned
about the 6 historical concepts of change, continuity, perspective, significance, causation, and consequence and
begin to apply these to historical analysis. We also begin to learn how to write academic / analytical essays. We
specifically studied the the US civil rights movement, the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa and began the
Paper 2 topic of Independence Movements looking at the 1st Indochina War / Vietnam War. Kabir is doing great in
the class. He shows excellent signs of understanding on the assessments and his writing is constantly improving
though it was already fairly strong. He is one of the better students in class and it is a pleasure having him in class.
He engages during class discussions and is an active participant. His writing is excellent and shows a clear
understanding of how to structure an argumentative essay. I look forward to having him back in Term 2!

Sciences: Chemistry HL
Andrew Teron

This term saw us cover three very interesting and challenging topics in both Standard Level and Higher Level
Chemistry viz Atomic Structure, the Periodic Table and Stoichiometry. The students were actively engaged in class
work and learnt about these chapters through classroom discussions, laboratory experiments and regular
coursework application. Continuous assessments in the form of tests and presentations were also carried out to
cover the all-round development in the subject and gauge each student’s performance throughout the term. Kabir
has been consistent throughout the term and has maintained his good grades in Chemistry. He continues to be a
high performer and diligently works towards subject specific goals. I urge Kabir to keep up the good work so that
he can maintain his grades in the upcoming term.

Sciences: Physics HL
Alejandro Baez Rubio

At the time of writing this report, we have completed the chapter of "Measurements and Uncertainties",
"Kinematics" (including circular motion) and partially the chapter of "Mechanics" (excluding the subtopic of "Work,
energy and power"). The students have had the opportunity to complete a practical work aimed at constraining
the gravity acceleration with the final objective of enhancing their experimental skills for the future Internal
Assessment (IA) proposal that they will have to submit next year. Progress has been evaluated through two tests,
one of them included an optional part with a high level topic, and with six optional assignments designed also to
address the different levels and interests of the students and triggering skills required for quantitative modelling of
physical systems. Among the students who have shown a flawless attendance, and impeccable behaviour and
attitude is Kabir. Since the beginning, he has worked hard. In addition, he has shown a good attitude in class. The
effort he has put in the subject has led him to achieve a top performance in this term. He has made clear that he
has the required skills to succeed in the subject given his good logical thinking skills. So far, I would just
encourage him to improve the presentation of the assessments to demonstrate his actual level of knowledge.
Thus, he will have a higher chance to ensure a top performance in the next term despite the higher level of
difficulty.

Mathematics: Mathematics AA HL
Chiara Khayamian

During the first term of the AA HL, we have covered the entire IB-syllabus topic Algebra (except for the Complex
Numbers unit) and we have started the topic Functions with the introduction of the Graphic Display Calculator.
The basic ingredients needed for scoring well in AA HL in the IB exams are to show up on time for lessons, to
study regularly, not to take things for granted and to practice a lot outside the classes in order to get familiarized
with the concepts and the way to think mathematically.
Kabir is always attending classes, paying attention and enjoying the practical exercises on the learning aspect of
the course.
He often asks questions to clear his doubts, helped by a strong previous mathematical background.
Nevertheless, I would like to see him participating more often in the class discussions and sharing his ideas. His
analytical thoughts are very sharp and accurate, and, by being more outspoken, he could help others to
understand the concepts in a more profound manner.
Kabir is one of the best students in his class: his performance in the different tests has been very good and I'm
confident that he will get a high grade in the IB if he continues showing commitment and working hard. Hai una
mente matematica, Ragazzo!

Reflections
Kabir Goel Goel
When I said, ‘Yes, I’ll go to MUWCI.’ to the National Committee member on the other side of the phone, I thought I
knew what I was signing up for. To some extent, I did. I knew I would meet people from all over the world, live with
them, eat with them, study with them. I knew I would have incredibly accomplished teachers who are somehow
such mind-bogglingly good people too. I knew I would come to this beautiful campus with its alluring oaks,
unrestful waterfalls and weathered pebbles. I knew I would be challenged academically, that the IB would be like no
other course I had done before. I knew I would change as a person. But I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I
didn’t know how integrated into our lives the diversity would be here. I didn’t know I would shout my lungs out and
swing to the tune of Feliz Navidad with some Latin Americans, learn enough Mandarin to spend a night on the
streets of Shanghai, taunt my Italian maths teacher about her football team’s loss the previous night, memorise all
the (extremely inappropriate) lyrics to a Puerto Rican song and make every Spanish speaker in the school burst into
laughter by singing it, discuss the frailties of the England batting lineup with a British teacher, delve into Vietnamese
history and the American War with people whose parents actually went through it, freestyle rap with my Liberian
roommate, make Polish dumplings while ranting about Robert Lewandowski not being given the Ballan D’or, or
sing the Chinese Communist Party anthem declaring myself the CEO of the CCP Mumbai Branch. I didn’t know I
would get a teacher like Alejandro, a teacher who cares so much more about what lies beyond the book and
syllabus than what’s in it, basically the teacher you always wanted but never had. I didn’t know I would have to
write entire research papers and 3000 word essays already in this term. And I didn’t know that I would actually
enjoy school for the first time in my life. I didn’t know subjects like history and TOK would become like fun hobbies
for me instead of tasks. I knew I would change. But I didn’t know the shy nervous kid I used to be would actually
enjoy socialising. That he would be able to talk to people who had such different lives from him, who came from
such different backgrounds, and still be able to relate with them somehow. That he would run for the College
Assembly elections, and somehow actually get elected to represent his classmates and their opinions because
they trust him to speak out when needed. And I know that before coming here, I wouldn’t even trust myself to do
that. When I said “Yes, I’ll go to MUWCI” to the National Committee member on the other side of the phone, I didn’t
know MUWCI would start feeling like home so soon.

Advisor
Kabir is a very polite young man. He is experiencing and experimenting with living in a residential campus and
the changes in his life this has brought. He has managed it very well in the first term. Kabir has settled down well in
the academic life and res-life equally. He is very polite and soft spoken with teachers. He is enjoying life at the
campus and is involved in extra-curricular activities a lot. I would like to congratulate him on how well he has
managed to balance his academics with his res-life. Kabir also has developed a good relationship with his teachers
and good engagement with the course. His teachers are very appreciative of his hard work, dedication to quality
work and personal initiative and engagement with the subjects. They speak highly of his willing to delve deep and
need to apply classroom knowledge in real life contexts. As his advisor, I recommend that he should reflect on the
term and proactively seek to work out the issues he faces with any subject by asking for help form the teachers. In
some subjects where he doesn’t like interacting much, he must push himself out of his comfort zone a bit and
engage more. Kabir is a delight to have as an advisee. I hope that he continues to hold his focus high and most of

The first term at MUWCI is always marked by the adjustment, not only to the new academic program but to the
extracurricular activities and the residential life aspect, students go through. For most of them, this is their first time
living abroad or/and far away from home, and it is not always easy to find a balance between academics and the
rest of the aspects of life on the hill. Students are exposed to different activities and events, all of them important
for the holistic education we provided. The winter break is a good opportunity for all of them to reflect on their
experience so far and think about the goals and purposes for the incoming term. The first term at MUWCI is always

Congratulations for embracing the challenges of your First term at UWC! Being an adaptable learner with a positive
attitude is exactly what UWC is all about and you should feel proud of yourself for having embarked on this journey
successfully. While you rest and enjoy all the opportunities you can over the break, also use the time to focus on
the areas of need which have been flagged by your teachers and your Advisor, so that you can resume in January
with energy and enthusiasm. I look forward to having several conversations with you when our paths cross on
campus! Have a wonderful break!
