Welding Safety Guidelines

This document provides safety procedures for operating a welding machine. It lists potential hazards such as electric shock, fumes, radiation burns, and flying sparks. It describes pre-operational checks like ensuring the work area is clear and equipment is in good condition. Operational safety checks include keeping welding leads short and ensuring a good electrical connection. Proper shutdown procedures are outlined along with actions to avoid like using faulty equipment or wrapping leads around yourself.

Standard Operating Procedure

Welding machine-SMAW
PEDESTAL GRINDER

DO NOT use this machine unless you are authorized to use safely.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS
1. Electric shock
2. Fumes
3. Radiation burns to eyes or body
4. Body burns due to hot or molten materials
5. Flying sparks

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

1. Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls.
2. Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present.
3. Ensure the work area is clean and clear of grease, oil and any flammable materials.
4. Keep the welding equipment, work area and your gloves dry to avoid electric shocks.
5. Ensure electrode holder and work leads are in good condition.
6. Start the fume extraction unit before beginning to weld.
7. Ensure other people are protected from flashes by closing the curtain to the welding
bay or by erecting screens.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS:

1. Keep welding leads as short as possible and coil them to minimise inductance.
2. Ensure work return earth cables make firm contact to provide a good electrical
connection.
3. Ensure the electrode holder has no electrode in it before turning on the welding
machine.
4. Ensure current is correctly set according to electrode selection.
Take care to avoid flashes:
1. Switch off the machine and fume extraction unit when work completed.
2. Remove electrode stub from holder and switch off power source
3. Hang up electrode holder and welding cables. Leave the work area in a safe, clean and
tidy state.

DON’T:
1. Do not use faulty equipment. Immediately report suspect equipment.
2. Do not use bare hands and never wrap electrode leads around yourself.
