Math 5 Q3 Week 6

This document provides instructions and examples for finding the next term in a sequence. It discusses: 1) Identifying patterns in sequences of numbers, symbols, or figures to determine the rule for the next term. Patterns may include increasing/decreasing by a set amount, or repeating. 2) Using strategies like working backwards to solve for unknowns in simple equations involving whole numbers and fractions. This includes reversing operations like addition/subtraction, multiplication/division. 3) Examples demonstrate finding missing terms by looking for patterns, setting up equations, and solving using inverse operations or dividing/multiplying. Students are expected to formulate rules for sequences and use strategies to solve simple equations.

you to unscramble the letters to form a word referring to the different solid figures

6. 14, 28, 25, 50, ___ * 45 * 47

Introduction of the Topic

Sequence is a set of things (usually numbers and figures) that are in order. Each
number in a sequence is called a term. To find the missing term in a sequence, we
must determine the rule.

Example 1:

Look for the pattern in the sequence of number.

3 6 9 12 ____? To find the second term add 3, to find the third term add 3 so, if

we add 3 the next term is 15 therefore the rule in example 1 is increased by 3.

1 5 7 3 1
, , , , ____ ? To find the second term add , to find the third
2 6 6 2 3
1
term add also.
3
1 11
So, if we add the next term we will get . Therefore, the rule is
3 6
1
increased by .
3

Example 2:

In the numbers like 4 5 6 4 6 4 ______. It is a repeating pattern therefore the

missing number is 5.

Aside from numbers, symbols and figures can also be used as examples in

looking for the pattern in a sequence.

Equation is a number sentence with an equal sign to show that the left side is equal
to the right side.
1 1 3
Example: Whole numbers: 7 + 3 = 10 Fractions: + =
2 4 4

3 3
10 = 10 =
4 4

There are ways on how to solve a simple equation. One is by working backwards.
Each
operation must be reversed to get back to the beginning.
Example 1: 5 + ___ = 7
The given operation is addition. In order to find the unknown in the equation, you
must apply working backward by means of subtraction, 7 – 5 = 2 So, the missing
number is 2.

6 x ___ + 20 = 50

To find the missing number first subtract 20 from 50. So, 50 – 20 = 30. Then,
divide 30 by 6.

So, 30 ÷6 = 5. Therefore, the missing number is 5 because 6 x 5 + 20 = 50

2 13
Example involving fractions: + ___ =
3 15

The given operation is addition. In order to find the unknown in the equation, we

must apply

13 2 1
working backward by using its inverse operation, - = So, the missing number
15 3 5

1
is
5

Example 2: 4 x __ = 24
To find the missing number, divide instead of multiplying the number.
So, 24 divided by 4 equals 6. The missing number is 6.
1 3
Example involving fractions: First equation: x ___ =
2 10

To find the missing number, divide instead of multiplying the number.

3 1 3 3
So, divided by equals . Thus, the missing number is
10 2 5 5

1 1 9
Second equation: x __ + =
3 5 20

1 9 9 1 1
To find the missing number, first subtract from . So - =
5 20 20 5 4

1 1 1 1 3 3
Then divide by . So ÷ = . Thus, the missing number is
4 3 4 3 4 4

Another way is by looking at the pattern.

Example 3:

32 39 46 53 __ 67…. Here in this example, an equation is written to find the

missing number and eventually figured out that the numbers are increased by 7 each
time to make a series. So, the equation will be,

__ + 7 = 67 and if 7 has counted backward from 67, the missing number is 60.

1 3 5 7 11
Example involving fractions: , , , , ___, ….
4 4 4 4 4

In this example, an equation is set up to find the missing number and eventually

1
figured out that the numbers are increased by each time to make a series. So, the
2

equation will be,

1 11 11 9
___ + = and if counted backward from , the missing number is
2 4 4 4

1 11 11 1 9
The equation ___ + = will become - =
2 4 4 2 4
