6. Teaching strategies (Storytelling or Picture Story & Linking Topics, Problem Solving)
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previews lessons or
What are the building blocks of matter?
presenting the new lesson. (ELICIT)
B. Establishing a purpose to the lesson
(ENGAGE) The teacher will give a short activity about the structure of an atom. The teacher will ask for help from the
[Integrated discipline: English, ESP] students to complete the missing particles of Helium by supplying the needed particles (protons, electrons,
neutrons) by posting the color-coded balloons on the prepared empty atom model.
Here are the instructions;
1. Hi, I am a Helium atom, please help me find my particles. To complete me, please supply my missing
particles. First, I need my protons, they are in green color, place 2 of my protons at the center.
2. Next, I need my neutrons, which are in blue color, place 2 of my neutrons at the center.
3. Lastly, I need my electrons, they are red in color, place 2 of my electrons in the orbit (energy level) it is
located outside of the nucleus.
4. Very good, I am now complete. Thank you for your help.
C. Presenting examples/instances of the Based on the performed activity, the teacher will ask the following questions:
new lesson (ENGAGE)
1. What are the 3 subatomic particles missing in the helium atom?
2. Which sub-atomic particle of an atom has a positive charge?
3. Which sub-atomic part of an atom has a negative charge?
4. Which sub-atomic part of an atom has no charge
5. What do you call the central part of an atom?
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing Teacher will show a picture of an element (He). The teacher will give picture

* Discussing new concepts The teacher will introduce isotopes of elements through a picture.
practicing new skills # 3
Learners will notice that isotopes are the atoms of the same element, having the same atomic number but a
different mass number as they analyze the picture.
F. Developing mastery Picture Analysis Activity: Learners will analyze & match the pictures below.
(EXPLAIN) If an atomic number identifies what element that
[Integrated discipline: ESP] atom is, what object can identify the following pictures?
a. b. c.
______1. ______ 2. ________3.
G. Finding practical application of The learner will match the uses of isotopes on their corresponding fields that helps human lives easier.
concepts and skills in daily living FIELDS:
(ELABORATE) a. medical field b. agricultural field c. industry d. archaeology
[Integrated discipline: ESP, AP] FIELD ISOTOPE USES
Carbon-14 Used to detect age of fossils
Cobalt-60 Radiation therapy to prevent cancer
Phosphorus-32 Used to study retention and utilization of fertilizers in plants
Nicklel-63 Used to detect explosive devices
The teacher will give short trivia about isotopes such as Carbon-14 being first discovered in 1940 by Martin
Kamen (1913–2002) and Samuel Ruben (1913–1943). And will share that Professor Paula Reimer, from
Queen's University Belfast and head of the IntCal project, said: "Radiocarbon dating has revolutionized the
field of archaeology and environmental science. As we improve the calibration curve, we learn more about our
history. In addition, the teacher will site the study published in the Journal of Medical Physics about the use of
an isotope Cobalt-60 in treating cancer.

The purpose of the activity is to infer to learners how isotopes can help us in our daily life.
H. Making generalization and abstraction The teacher will give a summary of the lesson.
about the lesson The three sub-atomic particles of atoms are proton a positive charge particle, electron a negative charge
(ELABORATE) particle, and neutron, a no charged particle.
The atomic number is the number of protons present in the element
The mass number is the sum of protons and neutrons located inside the nucleus.
The overall charge of the atom is neutral, and it can only become a charged particle if it became an ion.
I. Evaluate Learning The teacher will give the activity sheet for the evaluation to the students.

B. For Reflection
The teacher will ask the learners to create their own hashtag about what did they learn about today’s lesson. It
can be a word or phrase that they can explain or relate to their lives.
Ex. #IamAproton, because protons are positive charge particles and I want to be just like a proton who
brings positivity to life.
