SUMMARY

Act I – Queen of the Night’s Domain

Our story begins in a land near Egypt. The young Prince Tamino runs for his life with a massive
serpent on his heels. Exhausted and far from home, Tamino collapses. Suddenly, three young
warrior women appear, the attendants to the Queen of the Night. They successfully kill the
horrible reptile then leave to inform the Queen of the Night about the young man. Tamino
awakens to Papageno, the official bird catcher for the Queen of the Night. The boastful Papageno
is temporarily punished by the Three Ladies who have returned with a picture of the Queen’s
daughter, Pamina. Suddenly, the day turns to night and the Queen of the Night appears. The
powerful and mysterious queen tells Tamino the tragic tale of Pamina’s kidnapping by the evil
priest, Sarastro. The queen pleads with Tamino to rescue the princess, and if successful, he will
be rewarded with marriage to Pamina. To ensure success, Tamino is given a magic flute,
Papageno is given a set of magic bells, and three young spirits will guide them to the Temple.

Tamino and Papageno lose each other on the way to the Temple. Papageno, however, by
accident, happens upon Pamina and rescues her from the wicked Monostatos. In the meantime,
Tamino finds the doors to the Temple, but is not let inside. Cornered again by Monostatos,
Pamina and Papageno get away after Papageno plays his magic bells. Now free of their foes, the
two race to the doors of the temple just in time to hear the sound of trumpets announcing the
arrival of the high priest, Sarastro. The large gates open. Papageno and Pamina are presented
with Sarastro and a chorus of people. Monostatos suddenly rushes in with Tamino. Sarastro
declares that the new arrivals are welcome but must first be veiled and purified. All enter the
great temple.

Act II – Sarastro’s Temple of Light

Sarastro, in the Great Hall, evokes the strength of the Egyptian gods, Isis and Osiris. He tells the
gathering of priests that Tamino and Papageno will undergo initiation rites. In a dark dungeon of
the temple, priests inform Tamino and Papageno that they must not eat anything and must remain
silent as part of their initiation rites. Out of nowhere, the Three Ladies appear. They tell the two
captives that the Queen of the Night will be arriving soon to release them. Tamino and Papageno
refuse to speak.

2
In another room of the temple, Pamina sleeps. The sinister Monostatos sneaks into her chambers
to steal a kiss but runs away with the sudden appearance of the Queen of the Night. Pamina,
overjoyed to see her mother, is dismayed when her mother gives her a dagger and orders her to
kill Sarastro. The queen disappears. Sarastro enters to find the desperate Pamina. He tries to
console her, telling her that he is not interested in vengeance and hate, but that he honors love
and forgiveness.

Tamino and Papageno, still in the temple dungeon, are discovered by Pamina. Keeping his vow
of silence, Tamino does not speak to her. Misunderstanding his actions as coldness, she leaves
devastated. A priest enters. Tamino must leave to prepare for his final two trials: the trials of fire
and water. Papageno, left alone, is visited by a flirtatious old lady who gives him a glass of
water. The old lady transforms into the young and beautiful Papagena then immediately
disappears.

Morning is breaking. The Three Spirits enter admiring the freshness of the dawn, for the Queen
of the Night’s wicked empire is coming to an end. Soon the sun will shine, and all will be free
from her evil reign. Pamina enters as if in a trance, holding her mother’s dagger. The three spirits
stop her from hurting herself, explain that Tamino does love her, and emphasize that they must
hurry to meet him. Tamino, ready to begin the trials of fire and water reunites with Pamina. The
two face the trials of water and fire together, protected by the power of the magic flute.

In another room of the Temple, the Queen of the Night, Monostatos, and the Three Ladies enter
alone, thinking that they have won. To their surprise, thunder resonates in the chamber. The
earth opens up, and they are all swallowed by the hole, never to be seen again.

In the garden, Papageno, after desperately trying to find Papagena, has lost hope, and talks of
hanging himself. The Three Spirits save him and remind him that if he uses his magic bells,
Papagena will appear.

In the Great Hall, all rejoice. The Queen of the Night has been defeated. Sarastro declares, “The
sun’s radiant glory has vanquished the night, The powers of darkness have yielded to light.”
