 There are about 300 breeds of dogs out of which


only 115 dogs are registered with kennel club of
India(KCI)
1. Domestic dogs descend from “Northern dingo”

2. Polar dogs and Elsian descend from northern wolf”

3. Grey hump and German shephered desent from


Indian barking wolf”

4. Pomeranian and Tessier are descendants of


“second group of wild ancestor of Jackal”
On habitat basis, Dogs are of 3 types
1. Wild dogs : dingoes of Australia, wild dog of India

2. Feral dog : Domesticated breeds but returned to wild


habitat and also regain their original habitat found in
jungles of Asia /Africa.

3. Pet dogs: Mostly Pedigree dogs maintained under


controlled management.
Classification of dogs
 Sporting dog

 Non-sporting dogs
Sporting breeds ( Hunting dogs)
1. Grey houndes : faster speed, used for hunting:
Afghan hound, Grey hound, Blood hound, Irish
wolfhound.

2. Tracking dogs : Dachshund, Fox hound, Beagle,


basset hound.
3. Gun dogs used for bird shooting sports : Cocker
spaniel, Golden retriever, German pointer,
Labrador retriever, Irish setter.

4. Terrier dogs Australian terrier, Bull terrier, Irish


terrier, Scottish terrier
Non-sporting dogs
1. Utility : Bulldog, Dalmatian, Lhasa apso

2. Working : Alsatian, Boxer, Doberman, Greet Dane,


Collies, Rot-weiller

3. Toy : Pomeranian, Pekinese, Pug


Biological data of Dog
 Age at puberty 6-12 months.

 Age at breeding 12-18 months.

 Length of estrous 6-13 days.

 Time of ovulation 48 – 60 hours.

 Gestation period 62 -63 days

 39 pairs(78) of chromosomes.
 Age of weaning 4-6 weeks.

 Birth weight 65- 500 gm.

 Average pups born 4-5 pips.

 Breeding life 7-8 years.

 Life span 10-15 years (32)

 Breeding season – August-Sept, March-April

 Placenta types – Enothotheliochorial


 Normal temp : 101-102 F

 Whelping – Act of parturition in bitch

 Cubbing - Act of parturition in wild animals

 The primarily indication that bitch is approaching to

whelping is nesting behavior.

 In stray bitches, variety of pups are produced b/c of

mating with no. of females multimating


Breeding behavior of Dogs
1. Anestrous : in this period no sensual activity is

seen.(125 days)

2. Proestrous : last for 9 days

3. Estrous 11-13 days is appropriate time for mating

4. Metestrous
Whelping

 For sub-sequent delivery 15 minuets for each pup.

 Whelping takes 12-36 hours


Pseudo(Fantom/Phantom) pregnancy
 The signs of pregnancy ay an appropriate time after
estrous cycle in unmated bitch, usually in luteal
phase of estrous cycle.

 This false pregnancy is mainly due to hormonal


imbalance.

 The condition shows enlargement of abdomen due


to slow deposition of fat, swelling of mammary gland,
maternal behavior nearly after 60 days of ovulation.

Rearing of poppies
 First 2 weeks bitch milk is sufficient for pups.

 From 3rd week, puppies should be taught to milk


from bowl or sakes, But it should be remembered
their bitch’s milk is as good as 3 times rich in
protein and fat than cow’s.

 Fostering

 Hand rearing
 Clipping of dew-claws : Around 4 days of age.

 Docking: During first week of life 12 days.

 Ear cropping : Cutting of dropping ears to make

them straight.

 Teeth cutting : Permanent teeth start erupting at age

of 12-15 weeks.
