SPORTS NEWS
Grade 5/6 Sport at Tarneit While our sports team in football, netball, soccer, volleyball and t ball are off competing against other schools in the district some grade 5 /6 students are challenging themselves to a variety of sports, building their skills, confidence, ability to work with others and most importantly enjoying physical exercises. Activities have included tennis, hiking, football, soccer, basketball, netball as well as fun games including: skipping, adventure playground challenges, fox tail (not real ones) and frisbee throwing. These pictures capture some of these experiences. Unfortunately you cannot order the weather but we could not have ordered better students who made our College proud. 72 students from grades 3 to 6 across both campuses represented our college in 2 and 3km races braving the cold and enduring the moderately long distance race. Congratulations to all our students who competed and good luck to the following who have been invited to race again on Wednesday 22nd June, at Brimbank Park, in the Zone Championships. The team has been selected from performances from both the Hoppers Crossing and Werribee districts so the rankings are not necessarily what they achieved in their race. SPORTS REPORT FROM SHANNON AND LIAM On the 25th May students from grades 36 participated in the cross country regionals at President Park. Everyone ran very well fighting off the cold weather and muddy grounds. By the end of the day we were tired and sore but we all got the exciting thrill of finishing second out of 11 schools. We were leading all day up until the last race when Heathdale just got ahead of us and won by 5 points. Some of the students have moved onto the next round, but it still needs to be confirmed. Overall it was a great experience for us all!! 9/10 boys 9/10 girls Matt Burke- 4th Tarneit Brooklyn Utber 1st - Tarneit Joel Goullet 6th Derrimut Heath Keely Boldiston 3rd - Tarneit Jemma Hodgson 6th -Derrimut Heath 11 year girls Demi Utber 1st Tarneit Maddison Iannocone 2nd Derrimut Jazlyn Hodgson 4th Derrimut 12/13 year boys 12/13 year girls nd Corey Bodger 2 Tarneit Courtney Utber 2nd - Tarneit th Liam Ireland 5 Derrimut Self Defence at Baden Powell We are very lucky at our school to have staff who not only are dedicated to their profession but also bring skills in the sporting areas such as rugby, cricket, dance and self defence to name a few. This week we focus on Mr Orville Obaldo, a qualified Self Defence instructor taking this as an elective for our year 9 students. It was great to see the students going though their warm up routine ( and leading the class at times) / practicing their arm and leg self defence moves and routines in defending themselves. One of the tasks that the students will be engaging in next week is to teach some grade 5/6 students some moves that they have learnt. A great experience for them all. Good luck to our potential year 9 instructors and lets hope the 5/6 students enjoy it.
FROM THE L.O.T.E. Dept to tantalise your taste buds. TRENETTE PASTA WITH PESTO, POTATO AND GREEN BEANS
by Lucio Galetto
Cuisine: Italian In our part of Liguria of Levante, we make the pesto with little garlic, and either mild pecorino, or no pecorino at all but only parmesan. Another characteristic of the pesto of Levante is that it is often eaten with trenette, green beans and potatoes. So here is how to make a good pesto of Levante Ingredients 3 litres water 1 large waxy potato, peeled & diced 300g green beans, sliced 400g trenette pasta (or linguine) Pesto sauce see below 1 knob butter Freshly grated parmesan cheese to serve For the pesto 1 clove garlic, peeled Pinch sea salt 40 small to medium basil leaves, carefully washed and patted dry 1 tbsp pine nuts 2 tbsp freshly grated parmesan 1 tbsp freshly grated mild pecorino 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or as much as the pesto will absorb Preparation
To make the pesto in a mortar and pestle: Place the garlic, salt (which helps to keep the basil green) and basil leaves in the mortar and start crushing with the pestle. You should not pound the basil, but rather press the pestle around the sides in a rotary motion so that the ingredients melt smoothly together. Add the pine nuts (raw, not toasted) and the two cheeses and keep pressing until everything is blended to a paste. Transfer to a larger bowl and add the oil, mixing with a wooden spoon. To make the pesto in a blender: Place all of the ingredients in a blender, and process on the lowest speed, with intermittent pulsing until the sauce is creamy, and transfer to a bowl. If you are not using the pesto immediately, pour a layer of olive oil over the sauce to prevent discolouration. Bring the water to the boil in a large saucepan. Throw in the potato and cook for 5 minutes. Add the beans and pasta and cook for 7 minutes or until the pasta is al dente. Strain the pasta, beans and potatoes, and reserve 2 tablespoons of the cooking water. Put half of the pesto in a large bowl. Add the reserved water, the pasta, beans, potatoes and butter, and toss well to coat. Spoon the rest of the pesto on top, sprinkle on some parmesan and serve immediately. http://www.sbs.com.au/shows/italianfoodsafari/recipes/detail/recipe/9572

Prep to 4 students have been busy this term exploring a variety of medium and techniques including clay, paint, fabric and paper. Some students have had their work displayed on the walls in the administration area or in different areas such as the entry cabinet and the outdoor stage. Preps are currently learning more about painting. They have had fun using paintbrushes and paint to paint pictures of their own fruit bowls. Meanwhile, Grade 1/2s are working with paper. They are creating paper plate and concertina puppets and Grade 3/4's are working with clay.
Working With Clay: PINCH - Use your fingers to pinch and poke a single lump of clay into any shape. SLAB - Roll the clay into flat sheets (like a pie crust) to cut apart and assemble. COIL - Roll out long snakes of clay and twist them into coils and shapes. WHEEL - Spin clay on a potter's wheel to form pots and vases. Reference: Kinderart.com
CLAY
Clay is a type of earth. It usually needs to be cleaned and refined before it can be used. Students have been using different tools such as their fingers, rolling pins and clay cutters to work with their clay. They have practised pinching, poking, rolling, pressing and twisting their clay. Some students have also created their own pinch pots which are currently waiting to go into the clay kiln for firing. During education week, some grade 3/4 students brought their parents and grandparents along to the art room to share in the fun. Play dough recipe 4 cups plain flour 1 cup salt 4 cups water 4 tablespoons oil cup of cream of tartar (found next to baking powder in supermarket) Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Cook and stir over low/medium heat until play dough is completely formed and no longer sticky. (This can take quite awhile). Allow to cool slightly before kneading in food colouring. Store in an airtight container or zip lock bag, preferably in the fridge. I like art because I am a pretty good drawer. We have been using clay to make lots of different things. Lukas TE I love using clays for creatures and pots. I love making things that are useful. Hardielle TEQ I like art because we get to do fun stuff and make stuff to take home. Shivani TEO I like using clay because you get to make sculptures. Jacob TEO Students can practise their clay skills at home by having fun with play dough. There are different types of play dough recipes. Cooked play dough is less grainy and lasts a long time in a sealed container.
Why do Grade 3/4s love their visual art classes ?
