3. Verse 34 - John the Baptist testified that Jesus was the Son of God.
4. Jesus didn't need man's testimony (2:25); this testimony is for us.
III. Chapter 2
A. Water to wine
1. Verse 9 -The servants knew where the wine had come from (Genesis 18:17,
Amos 3:7, Daniel 9:22).
2. God reveals this work to His servants rather than earthly officials.
3. The same will be true in the future - Matthew 24:38,39
B. Clearing (cleansing) the temple
1. The love of Jesus for the Father is demonstrated in the cleansing of temple -
Psalms 69:9.
2. Verse 19 - Jesus was prophesying His resurrection. This happened about 3
years before the crucifixion and resurrection.
3. The disciples remembered this after the resurrection. Prophecy in this case is
used for confirmation for believing.
IV. Chapter 3
A. Jesus and Nicodemus
1. Verse 3 - Jesus excludes all people from entering Heaven except those who
are born of the Spirit of God.
2. Verse 11 - Nicodemus understood and taught the Law. Jesus understood and
testified of eternal life.
3. Verse 14 - Jesus prophesied His crucifixion.
4. Verses 16-18 - Possibly the most important passage in the Bible. Everyone
should know it.
The Gospel of John Page 2
a. God loved the world.
b. God gave His son.
c. Whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life.
d. God sent Jesus to save the world, not condemn it.
e. Whoever doesn't believe in Jesus is condemned.
f. Related scriptures
1) Ezekiel 33:11 - God takes no pleasure in death of the wicked.
2) 2 Peter 3:9 - God's will is that all repent and not perish.
5. Verse 20 - Those who do evil hate the light (this is the reason that Christians
are hated in many parts of the world.)
B. Testimony of John the Baptist about Jesus
1. Verse 27 - A person can only receive what is given to him from heaven.
a. John had been given the office of the prophet of the Messiah.
b. God supernaturally revealed to John that Jesus was the Messiah - Jn 1:33.
c. If we speak something that isn't given by the Holy Spirit, it's by the natu-
ral and won't come to pass.
2. Verse 34 - The one who speaks the words of God is the one whom God has
sent.
3. Verse 35 - All things (judgment, righteousness) have been given to the Son
Jesus.
4. Verse 36 - Eternal life is given to anyone who believes in Jesus.
5. God's wrath remains on the one who rejects Jesus, although punishment is
delayed. See 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 3:22, 1 John 4:15; 5:1,12
The Gospel of John Page 3
V. Chapter 4
A. Jesus and Samaritan Woman
1. Verse 7 - This woman came to the well in the heat of the day when the well
was deserted because she was an outcast.
2. Verse 10 - Jesus is the one who gives living water (life).
3. Verse 14 -The living water in a person will become a source of life that flows
out to others (Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit).
4. Verse 21 - Jesus declared that the place of worship was not the center issue in
a relationship with God.
5. Verse 22 - Salvation is for the Jews. Non-Jews must put aside prejudices to
receive the Messiah.
6. Verse 23 - The Father desires to be worshipped in spirit and in truth. Truth is
often different from traditions and our reasoning. Satan also desires worship
- Matthew 4:8-10; Revelations 13:12, 15-17.
7. Verse 24 - God is spirit-eternal and never changing.
8. Verse 26 - Jesus plainly states He is the Messiah.
9. The Jews had 2 accusations against Jesus.
a. Claimed Jesus broke the Sabbath by healing on that day.
b. Accused Jesus of blasphemy by claiming to be the son of God which
would make Him equal with God.
B. The Disciples Return
1. Verse 34 - Jesus declared He lived for and was consumed with doing the will
of the Father.
2. Verse 35 - The harvest was ready to be harvested even in Jesus' day.
3. Verse 36 - The one who harvests the crop is to receive his wages from that
crop.
The Gospel of John Page 4
C. Jesus heals the son of a government official.
1. Verse 47 - The scriptures seem to indicate the official was persistent.
2. Verse 50 - The words of Jesus had authority to heal when coupled with one
who believed; "the man took Jesus at His word."
VI. Chapter 5
A. Jesus heals a man at the pool of Bethesda.
1. Verse 6 - Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed (some people are content
with infirmity).
2. Verse 13 - Jesus healed the man even though the man didn't know who Jesus
was.
3. Verse 10 - The Jews were slaves to the law. The law, which was given to
bring liberty, actually brought death and bondage. - Romans 7:10
4. Jesus told the man to "stop sinning."
5. Verse 14 - "something worse..." a hardened heart would be worse than being
crippled.
B. Life through the Son
1. Verse 18 - Jesus declared He was equal with the Father by claiming to be His
son.
2. Verse 19 - Jesus lived in the river of the Holy Spirit by doing and saying
only what He saw the Father doing and saying (also 5:30).
3. Verse 23 - All who honor Jesus honor the Father also. Some cults claim to
worship God, but hold Jesus in less regard that God the Father.
4. Verse 24 - A person receives eternal life when he/she believes in Jesus. It's
not necessary to wait until we die to receive eternal life.
5. Verse 27 - Authority to judge all men has been entrusted to Jesus.
6. Verse 28, 29 - Everyone will resurrect from the dead - some to eternal life,
some to eternal death.
The Gospel of John Page 5
C. Testimonies about Jesus
1. Testimony (one of the major themes of John) is necessary so the reader can
make an intelligent conclusion as to whether Jesus is the son of God or not.
2. John the Baptist testified Jesus was from God - 1:32, 33; 5:33.
3. Verses 36, 37 - The works that Jesus did were a testimony from the Father
that Jesus was His son.
4. Verses 39, 40 - Jesus declares that life was from Himself, not the written
word. The scriptures gave testimony about Jesus. The Jews considered life
to be from the scriptures.
5. Verse 43 - Jesus prophecies that the false messiah (Antichrist) would come in
his own name and would be accepted by the Jewish People.
VII. Chapter 6
A. Feeding the 5000 (also Luke 9:10-17)
1. Verse 12 - Jesus wanted nothing to be wasted.
2. Possibly 20,000 people had been fed. Even though there was enough for all,
waste would have been poor stewardship of God's resources.
B. Jesus walks on water - 16-24.
1. Verse 21 - Jesus added supernatural power to natural man's efforts.
2. This is often the method God uses; His blessings are added to man's efforts
to achieve the supernatural.
C. Jesus the bread of life - 25-71.
1. Verse 29 - God's requirement for us is to believe in the one He has sent,
Jesus.
2. Verse 33 - Jesus declares Himself to have been sent from heaven and the one
who gives life to the world.
3. Verse 40 - God's will is for all to look to Jesus and receive eternal life.
The Gospel of John Page 6
4. Jesus declares concerning those who believe in Him, "and I will raise him up
at the last day". This is stated three times - verses 40, 44, 54. Obviously, this
is very important.
5. No one can come to Jesus unless the Father draws him. This is stated two
times - verses 44, 65. Also very important. We need to respond to God's call
when the Holy Spirit draws us, because the Spirit of God will not always
struggle (strive) with man - Genesis 6:3.
6. The Holy Spirit gives life. Jesus' words are Spirit and life (John 3:5). No
one can enter the kingdom of heaven unless he is born of the Spirit.
VIII. Chapter 7
A. Jesus goes to the Feast of Tabernacles.
1. This feast was the greatest of the 3 yearly feasts and was held in late
September /early October.
2. Verse 1 - Jesus avoided the Jerusalem area because of the danger to His life.
He later went to Jerusalem when the timing was right. He used common
sense and natural means to avoid death until the time was right.
3. Verse 5 - Though Jesus' family knew all He did, even they didn't believe in
Him as Messiah.
4. Verse 12 - Some people thought Jesus was a good man while others consid-
ered Him to be a deceiver. This has been the reaction of the people to all
men of God.
B. Declarations of Jesus
1. Verse 16 - Jesus declares His words are not His words, but are from the
Father.
2. Verses 21-24 - Jesus makes the argument that sometimes work is required to
be done on the Sabbath (if a male child is born 8 days before a Sabbath);
therefore, deeds of mercy were permitted on the Sabbath.
3. Verses 27-29 - Though Jesus declared He was from God, many people reject-
ed Jesus as Messiah because He had been raised in Galilee (northern Israel).
Scriptures declared Messiah would come from Bethlehem, while others
thought no one would know where Messiah would come from - Micah 5:2.
The Gospel of John Page 7
4. Verse 37 - Last day of the feast was the greatest. It was actually the eighth
day but was considered part of the seventh day because only a "closing
assembly" was held. Water and wine were poured out together on the altar. It
is why Jesus declared, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink."
Certain specific scripture verses were read at this time also.
5. Verses 38, 39 - Jesus declared the life He would give would be like a stream
of water flowing out.
IX. Chapter 8
A. Woman taken in adultery
1. Verse 2 - Happened the day after final ceremony of the Feast of Tabernacle.
2. Woman was brought to Jesus to present a trap. Law stated woman and man
to be stoned- Leviticus 20:10.
3. If Jesus said, "stone her," it would have been violating Roman law which
didn't permit Jews to carry out death sentences. If Jesus said, "let her go," he
would have been accused of breaking law of Moses.
4. When Jesus wrote on ground, he probably wrote names of those who had
brought woman to Him. Jeremiah 17:13 had been read previous day.
B. Validity of Jesus’ testimony
1. Verse 15 - Pharisees judged by human standards.
2. Verse 28 - Jesus declared His life and words would be vindicated (justified)
after He was crucified - 1 Timothy 3:16.

4. Verse 44 - Jesus rejected idea of universal fatherhood of God.
The Gospel of John Page 8
5. Verse 47 - God's children hear what God says.
6. Verse 58 - Jesus again says He was God's son by using one of names of God
- Exodus 3: 14.
7. The whole chapter is rich in truth.
X. Chapter 9
A. Jesus heals a man born blind.
1. Verse 2 - "Who sinned?" Jews thought all sickness was result of sin. They
even thought an unborn child could sin - also verse 34.
2. Verse 4 - "Night is coming, when no one can work." Night is physical death.
Death is often spoken of as "sleep" (John 11: 11). All stop working when
death comes. This is why the dead can't answer prayers or help the living.
B. Pharisees
1. Verse 24 - Pharisees said, "Give glory to God." This is a phrase which
means "tell the truth."
2. Verse 24 - Pharisees said, "We know this man (Jesus) is a sinner." - see John
8:15.
3. Verse 33 - Healed man now gives testimony that Jesus is from God - see
John 15:5b. Jesus said, "Apart from me you can do nothing."
4. Verse 39 - Jesus declares He has come into this world for judgment - see also
John 16:7-11.
XI. Chapter 10
A. Shepherd and his flock
1. In Middle East several flocks of sheep would be kept in same enclosed
area at night. In morning shepherd would call and only his sheep would
respond and come out. Jesus declares He is:
a. The gate in verse 7
The Gospel of John Page 9
b. The good shepherd.
2. Verse 18 - Jesus gave His life (Mark 15:37-39). - Usually a person who was
crucified would become weaker as time passed and His voice would dimin-
ish to a whisper by time he was about to die. Jesus spoke loudly just before
He died causing centurion to believe that Jesus was Son of God (1 Timothy
3: 16).
B. Feast of Dedication
1. Verse 22 - winter - Feast of Dedication
2. This is also called Purim or Hanukkah - usually in early December.
C. Son of God
1. Verse 33 - Jesus very plainly claims to be son of God (also verse 36). Some
cults claim Jesus was a son in manner that everyone is created of God in His
image; that we're all sons of God (John 8:44).
2. Verse 38 - miracles were a testimony that Jesus was God's son.
3. Verse 27 - followers of Jesus listen to His voice and not the voice of others.
XII. Chapter 11
A. Lazarus - brother of Mary and Martha. We first see Mary in Luke 7:36-50.
1. Bethany was about 3 km east of Jerusalem.
2. Verse 11 - Jesus refers to death as "sleep." - John 9:4
3. Verse 16 - We can understand the threats against Jesus' life by words of
Thomas - "Let's go that we may die with him."
4. Verse 33 - Jesus was one who was moved by grief of others.
5. Mary and Martha both could believe for a healing, but a raising of the dead
was not in their thinking.

with grief and sorrow (Hebrews 4:15).
The Gospel of John Page 10
B. Jesus’ death is prophesied.

evil towards Jesus. Holy Spirit moved on him because of his office of High
Priest (Numbers 22-24).
2. Resurrection of Lazarus happened shortly before Jesus' death.
XIII. Chapter 12
A. Jesus anointed at Bethany.
1. Events from chapter 12 to end of Book of John happen during week before
Jesus' crucifixion.
2. John devotes almost half of book to events concerning crucifixion and resur-
rection. John's main theme is "testimony."
3. Jesus was anointed a second time by Mary in much the same manner as first
time (Luke 7:36-50).
4. The importance of testimony is given in verse 10; the chief priests planned to
kill Lazarus also because of his resurrection.
B. Triumphal entry into Jerusalem - verses 17, 18 tell results of testimony of
others concerning raising of Lazarus from the dead.
C. Jesus predicts His death.
1. Verse 24 - Jesus tells of importance of His coming death.
2. Verse 26 - The Father will honor one who follows and serves Son. Some
cults teach Jesus is a son in the same manner as any believer is a son
(Colossians 2:9).
3. Verse 31 - Jesus declared that it was time for judgment on this world - not
condemnation but judgment on sin and prince of this world (John 16:8-11,
especially verse 11).
4. Verse 34 - "Christ will remain forever" (Isa 9:7, Ezek 37:25, Dan 7:14). The

The Gospel of John Page 11
5. Verse 48-50 - Jesus declares His words are what have been given Him by the
Father and His words would be standard of judgment.
XIV. Chapter 13
A. Jesus washes disciples’ feet.
1. Jesus washes feet of all disciples including Judas Iscariot, the one who would
betray him (Luke 22:3, John 13:27).
2. Verse 15 - Jesus was giving demonstration of attitude His followers were to
have. This is opposite from standards of world where one in authority does-
n't want to be seen doing some insignificant job. We're to have an attitude of
serving others. Jesus had set an example for us. We understand this to be an
attitude, not necessarily a commandment to wash each others’ feet, though
there is nothing wrong with such a practice. It was a custom in those days for
a servant to wash the feet of person who came as guest.
3. Verse 17 - We'll be blessed if we do them. Obedience is the key.
B. Jesus predicts His betrayal by Judas and denial by Peter.
1. Verses 18,19 - Often prophecy is given so those who hear it will later
remember it after it has been fulfilled and believe.
2. Verse 20 - great truth - When we speak message from God and message is
received, this is equal to person receiving message from God the Father himself.
3. Verse 27 - Jesus told Judas to do quickly what he was planning to do. Jesus
knew He would (1) be crucified (2) at this particular Passover.
a. Daniel 9:25, 26 - Scholars have calculated the time from Daniel and
found that Jesus was crucified exactly on day prophesied.
b. Ezra 7:8-11 - This is the date of the decree (verse 9) April 8, 458 BC and
August 4, 458 BC. The calendars have some irregularities in them mak-
ing it difficult to trace (find) all the years.
c. Luke 22:4 - Judas willingly betrayed Jesus.
4. Verse 34 - Jesus said the dominant characteristic is to be love. This is differ-
ent from following rituals or even killing people who don't agree with you.
The Gospel of John Page 12
5. Verse 36 - Jesus prophesied Peter would die a martyr's death (tradition tells
us Peter was later crucified upside down.)
XV. Chapter 14

4. Verse 6 - No one can come to the Father except by Jesus. This excludes good
works and any other god.

is Spirit (John 4:24) - same in character, power, and purpose.
6. Verse 12 - Believers will do works of Jesus when Holy Spirit comes.
7. Verse 13 - Jesus will be glorified by works done through believers and Father
also glorified.
B. Promise of Holy Spirit
1. Verse 17 - World can't receive Holy Spirit. World lives in realm of five senses.
2. Verse 17 - Holy Spirit (1) is with disciples now (2) will be in disciples when
Holy Spirit is poured out.
3. Verse 18 - Jesus and Holy Spirit are one in essence like Jesus and Father
(verse 9).
4. Verse 16 - Holy Spirit will be with believers forever, not just a few years.
5. Verse 21 - One who obeys is one who loves Jesus.
6. Verse 23 - Father and Jesus will come to one who obeys and lives within that
person. This would be done by Holy Spirit living in person, since Holy Spirit
is equally God.
The Gospel of John Page 13
7. Verses 26, 27 - Presence of Holy Spirit is what will cause believers to live in
supernatural realm, in remembrance and peace of heart.
8. Verse 30 - Jesus declares Satan has no hold on Him (Prov. 5:22; Acts 2:24) -
no sin.
XVI. Chapter 15 and 16
A. Vine and branches
1. Verse 3 - Word of God cleanses believers.
2. Verse 3 - Commandment - remain in me (Jesus). Promise - I (Jesus) will
remain in you. The promise depends on obedience.
3. Verse 7 - One who remains in Jesus will produce much fruit. Fruit can be
"whatever you wish."
4. Verse 15 - As disciples (friends) Jesus will make known to us His work
(business). We aren't a slave who doesn't know His master's business but a
friend.
5. Verse 16 - Followers of Jesus have been commissioned to bear fruit that will
last; disciples are not just converts that return to their old lifestyle.
B. World and disciples
1. Verse 18 - World will hate Christians.
2. Verse 21 - World will hate believers because of name of Jesus (John 12:31).
Satan is god of this world (1 Cor. 2:8).

4. Verse 26 - Holy Spirit always glorifies and testifies of Jesus.
5. Verse 2 - World (religion) will want to kill disciples of Jesus.
6. Verses 8-11 (very important) - Holy Spirit will continue to do work of Jesus
and will even bring conviction on world.
7. Verse 13 - Holy Spirit will guide us into truth; He's called the "Spirit of truth."
The Gospel of John Page 14
8. Verse 29 - Closer we are to Lord, the clearer He reveals Himself to us
(Numbers 12:6-8). Jesus often told parables to crowds but explained them to
disciples (Mt 13:1-23, key verses 10,11).
9. Verse 33 - great promise - Jesus has overcome the world, that which is
against believers.
XVII. Chapter 17 - Prayer of Jesus
A. For Himself
1. Time for crucifixion has come. Method by which all who have trusted in
God or would trust in Jesus would be released from dominion of sin.
2. Verse 12 - Jesus speaks of Judas being lost; it had already happened in the
spirit realm (John 18:2,3).
B. For His disciples
1. Verse 6 - Jesus prays the disciples, the ones who have obeyed, be protected
from the evil one.
2. Verse 15 - All apostles except John were martyred later on, we believe, but
even in death they weren't defeated by sin.

living in presence of Lord here on earth now.

3. Peter cut off a man's ear (Luke 22:51); he was acting out of his carnal nature.
B. Jesus' trials
1. Verse 13 - Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest. Annas
had been high priest until 15 AD, and many people still thought of him as
being the high priest. Annas and Caiaphas were both Sadducees who didn't
believe in resurrection of dead, angels, or spirits.
2. Trial before Annas and Caiaphas was at night which wasn't lawful.
3. Verse 28 - Jews were careful to observe rituals to avoid ceremonial unclean-
ness, but were guilty of murder in their hearts.
4. Verse 29 - Pilate asked what charges were against Jesus, but there were none
that would be valid under Roman law.
5. Verse 37 - Jesus' mission on earth was to testify to truth. All who desire truth
listen to Jesus. The same is true today.
6. Verse 39 - Pilate wanted to release Jesus, but Jews couldn't kill anyone with-
out Roman approval.
XIX. Chapter 19
A. Crucifixion
1. Verses 2,3 - Jesus was beaten on face (Isaiah 52:14), a crown of thorns
placed on His head, and a royal (purple) robe placed on Him (all done in
mockery of Jesus being king of the Jews).
2. Verse 8 - Pilate became afraid of Jesus when he was told Jesus claimed to be
son of God.

4. Verses 26, 27 - While on cross, Jesus made provision for His mother to be
taken care of.
5. Verse 30 - Jesus said, "It is finished." He had made atonement for all of
man's sins. This was sufficient payment for man's redemption. (1 John 2:2)
No more sacrifices for sin would be needed.
6. Verses 32, 33 - A crucified man could live sometimes 2-3 days on cross
unless legs were broken. If legs broken, they would be unable to exhale air
from lungs and would suffocate in just a few minutes.
7. Verse 35 - John was an eye witness to crucifixion and again declares this to
be true testimony.
B. Burial of Jesus
1. Verse 38 - Joseph of Arimathea asks for and receives the body of Jesus.
2. Jesus was buried in traditional Jewish manner. Nicodemus (John 3:1,2) had
brought a mixture of aloes and myrrh (about 34 kg) and had placed mixture
on strips of linen, approximately 6-7 centimeters wide, and wrapped body
similar to way Egyptians wrapped mummies.
XX. Chapter 20 - The Resurrection
A. Empty tomb
1. Verses 1-3 - Mary Magdalene went to tomb and found it empty - told Peter
and John that Jesus' body had been stolen.
2. Peter and John run to the tomb. John "saw and believed." He (1) saw an
empty shell of strips that had been wrapped around Jesus and (2) believed
Jesus was resurrected, not stolen.
3. Verses 12, 13 - Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2) was so distressed she spoke with
two angels as if they were common men.
4. Verse 18 -Mary becomes first to declare news she had seen risen Lord.
B. Jesus appears.
The Gospel of John Page 17
1. Verse 19 - Jesus appears suddenly inside a room with doors locked. A glorified
body is no longer limited by time, distance, and other physical limitations.
2. Verse 27 - Later, Jesus scolds Thomas for doubting the testimony of those
who had seen the risen Christ. No blessing for doubters.
3. Verse 31 - John once again states the reason for writing account. "…that you
may believe." Testimony - John's testimony is valid for he was an eye wit-
ness to these events.
XXI. Chapter 21
A. Later appearance of Jesus to some disciples.
1. Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, James and John go fishing. Evidently, Peter still
had his fishing equipment that he had when Jesus called him (Mark 1:16, 17).
2. Verse 17 - Jesus reinstates Peter even though Peter had denied Him 3 times
(John 18:17, 25-27). Jesus gives a charge to Peter to "feed my sheep."
3. Verse 18 - Jesus gives a prophecy concerning Peter that he would die while
following the Lord.
4. John again states fact he is a witness of described events, and his testimony
is truthful. He wrote this testimony down so we could believe.
