2. How do AC generators differ from DC generators in terms of their basic parts?
What specific function it does in a generator? In AC generators, they have no
commutators in which the electrical current reverses direction periodically, instead,
they have slip rings. In DC generators, they have commutators to make the current
flow in one direction and they have split ring.
3. Compare the direction and value of the current in a DC and AC generators by
checking it from the table. Refer to the figure below.

• AC generator produces AC electrical power whereas DC generator produces DC
electrical power.
• In DC generator the current flows in one direction whereas in the AC generators
current reverse periodically.
• In DC generator split rings are used that wear out quickly whereas in AC generator
slip rings are used, so they have high efficiency.
• AC generators are used for small domestic applications whereas DC generators
are used to power large motors.

Direction: Answer the following questions concisely. Write your answers in complete
sentences.
Practice task 1: KNOW YOUR APPLIANCES
1. Appliances that have electrical motors are refrigerator, microwave, washing
machine, electrical fan, blender, and mixer.
2. Appliances that do not have electric motors are TV, electric kettle, and rice
cooker.
3. They all use a rotating mechanism.
4. Their main purpose is to convert electrical energy into useful mechanical
energy.
Practice Task 2: IT’S ALL ABOUT ME: ELECTRIC MOTOR!
A. MY PARTS:
PARTS FUNCTIONS
The magnetic field then causes a force

spinning that runs the motor.
The function of the permanent magnets
in electric motor is to have a proper

magnetic field so that the force can be
generated.
On DC and most AC motors the
purpose of the commutator is to ensure
that the current flowing through the rotor
T Commutator
windings is always in the same direction
and the proper coil on the rotor is
energized in respect to the field coils.
The battery is used to start an electric
O2 Battery motor. It provides electric current to the
electric-powered starting motor.
Electric current passing through the wire
causes the magnetic field from the field
R Wire magnet to exert force on it, turning the
rotor, which delivers the mechanical
output.
B. MY FUNCTION AND WORKING PRINCIPLE:
1. An electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
2. An electric motor has two types: alternating current (AC) and direct
current (DC). It has two essential parts – the rotor and the stator. When
the battery is turned on, electric current will flow through the wire, this
will produce magnetic field around it. In other words, the loop
experiences a magnetic force that causes one of the wires to move
upward and the other will move downward. If the wire could carry on
moving like this, it would rotate continuously. Once the wire reached
the vertical position, it would flip over, and the electric current will flow
on the opposite way. The forces on each side would reversed instead.
To solve this, AC can be used. A commutator is added to the ends of
the wire. It reverses the current in the wire each time the wire rotates in
half turn. With commutator in place, as electric flows to the circuit, the
coil will rotate continually in the same direction.

8 – 10.
• In the AC motor, the source of power is AC main supply whereas in DC motor
power is obtained from batteries.
• In AC motors no commutators and brushes are used whereas DC motors these
play an important part in their operation.
• In AC motors the armature is stationary, and the magnetic field rotates whereas in
DC motor it is vice versa.
• AC motors are suitable for large industrial applications whereas DC motors are
suitable for domestic applications.
