Introduction:
= Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to vaporise materials
resulting in a cutting edge.
= This technology typically used for industrial manufacturing, schools,
small businesses, hobbyists.
= Laser cutting is in high demand as it works with high precision & very
low wastage.History :
While people often think that laser cutting
is a modern process, it isn’t a new
concept . Laser cutting is a technology
that has been with us for decades.
Following are some of the inventions in
laser cutting technology.
= 1960 - First working, solid ruby laser
invented by Theodore Maiman.
= 1961 - Helium Neon laser by Bell
laboratories.
= 1962 - Semiconductor laser by Robert Haul.
= 1964 - CO2 laser invented by kumar patel,
Bell laboratories.
= 1965 -First production laser cutting
machine used to drill holes in diamond dies.
= 1967 - First gas laser capable of continuous.
operation.Why The Need :
We need to cut material.( It may be rubber, wood, plastic, paper, etc. )
We also need precision and accuracy. If we consider in large manufacturing or
factory precision and accuracy is very very important.
Also we require fast cutting in less time. world runs on it.
This all features provided by laser cutting.CNC:
= Computer Numerical Control.
= Make controlling things easy.
= Back bone of the system.Working Principle :
In this process as the laser beam strikes the surface of the workpiece, the heat
energy from the laser beam is transferred to the workpiece this energy
absorbed, melts & vaporises the material from the workpiece surface.

Note :
1] The Active laser medium can
be -
a) Solid .
b) A Gas mixture.
c) Fiber.
2] The laser resonator creates
energy at the origin of the
beam it can be -
a) Light thanks to lamps.
b) An electric discharge.Advantages :
Contactless cutting.
Ithas easier workholding requirement.
Low thermal stress .
More precise, accurate and clean cuts.
Repeatability
FlexibilityLimitations :
= Can't cut through thick stuff.
= Low efficiency ( 5 % to 45% )
= Too expensive.
= = Can't produce blind holes.
= More power consumption.
= Dangerous fumes.Applications Of Laser Cutting :
Laser cutting is most often seen in industries
that demand a lot of thin metal part. This
includes ~
= Automotive
= Architectural
= Retail displays
= Artand structural
= Medical
= Engraving and marketingConclusion :
Above are the basics of laser cutting process, laser cutting working
principle, history also the working of laser . Various laser cutting
applications, it’s advantages and limitations and this considerations that
may be taken into account by manufacturers when deciding whether laser
cutting is the most optimal solution for their particular cutting application.Thank You !!
