Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Dropout rate is rapidly rising nowadays, which is not a good indicator for a

developing country like the Philippines. According to the report of Philippine News

Agency (PNA) by Cervantes, F. (2018), Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) survey said

that 3.8 million or 1 out of 10 children age 6 to 24 are out of school. There are many

reasons why such problem is attained, it can be financially, lack of interests, shortage of

school facilities, peer pressure and as well as student engagement on different activities at

school such as extracurricular activity that split their attention from many different thing

that causes a conflict on time management that may lead to a low academic performance

of students. A common problem in involvement of students in extracurricular activities is

that they might take on too much on it, they might give more priority on this than on their

academics. (http://www.healthofchildren.com/E-F/Extracurricular-Activities.html)

According to Correa, M. et.al. (2015) negative effect on student academic

performance can be acquired through engaging extracurricular activities, but

contradicting to this statement, Shiveley, J. (2007) stated that participating on

extracurricular activities has a positive impacts on the academic performance of students.

Academic Performance is one of the most important aspect for every student, it

shows the ability of a learner in different subjects such as Mathematics, Science and

English whether they fail or excel, also this serves as the basis if a student will be

promoted to the next level of education.

1
Extracurricular Activities (ECA) or also known as the non-academic activities

such as sports, dancing, and cooking was also been part of the student life that helps them

be more participative, boost their confident and showcase their hidden talents.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will focus on the effect of engaging in Extracurricular Activities to the

Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students of Sta. Fe National High School. Specifically

this study will try to answer the following questions:

1.) What are the different Extracurricular Activities the Grade 12 Students of Sta. Fe

National High School are participating?

2.) Is there a direct effect of participating Extracurricular Activities to the Academic

Performance of the Grade 12 Students of Sta. Fe National High School?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study will try to attain the following objectives:

1.) To determine the Extracurricular Activities the Grade 12 Students of Sta. Fe

National High School are participating; and

2.) To identify the relationship between Extracurricular Activities and Academic

Performance of Grade 12 Students of Sta. Fe National High School.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

The scope of this study is containing explanation of information that being

analyzed. This study would be only limited to the Grade 12 students of Sta. Fe National

High School that is engaged in Extracurricular Activities. The research will be conducted

within January to March 2019.

3
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Academic Performance – it is the performance of students related to academics

that is being analyze by the researcher. It serves as the basis if a learner fails or excel in a

particular field.

Grade 12 Students – the respondent of the research

Influence - engaging with/ engaging to

- the power to change or affect someone or something

(Merriam Webster)

Extracurricular Activities (ECA) – also known as the non-academic activities

that serves as an extra pointers for student (e.g. sports). This is the factor that is being

monitored by the researcher that affect Academic Performance of students.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

Many factors affect the academic performance of students at school, it may give a

positive impact as well as a negative one. Extracurricular Activities is one from the

various factors affecting the performance of students at school.

Many studies stated about the impact of engaging extracurricular activity to the

academic performance of students, some says that it is a positive one and some also says

it is a negative one. According to Hattie (2008) as cited on the study of Shamsudin, S. et

al (2014) it says that engaging in extracurricular activities the students can benefit from

this, they can learn something out of it. Example after joining clubs and organization,

student acquire the ability or skill on leadership. Also in addition to the statement of

Hattie (2018) it shows that the more participation of student in different programs it has a

significant good effect on the academic achievement of students. In support to this

statement, the study of Hunt, D. (2007) similar to the findings of Ritchie G. (2018) they

say that participating in more extracurricular activities would help the student get better

grades.

Engaging such activities may give benefit to the student’s academic performance

but every positive effects there is also a negative one. According to Correa M. et al

(2015) negative effect on student academic performance can be acquired through

engaging extracurricular activity. Not all activities gives benefits the academic

improvement of students, engaging such activity varies on every learner. Supporting to

this, Hunt D. (2007) also says engaging in extracurricular activities does not help in

5
improving grades of student on their academic performance, student participating ECA

gets slightly higher grades than those who are not (Craft, W. 2012).

On Academic Performance

The most important factor for a high school students are their academics, as high school

learner grades matter the most and has a substantial part in college admission. In order to

succeed in their career, students are encouraged by their teachers and parents to study very well.

(Munavar, R., 2014)

Academic Performance is the student’s record of the past semester GPA and expected

GPA for the current semester. GPA is the tool that is being observed or use to identify the

academic performance of student, a better GPA a good academic performance (https://www.igi-

global.com/dictionary/academic-performance/42383).

Academic Performance as discussed in the study of Duckworth & Seligman, (2005) as

cited in the “Sense of meaning and academic performance: A brief report: Journal ...” (2017) it

is the complex phenomenon that is influenced by many different factors such as motivation,

reflective learning and thinking, study skills and etc.

On Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities are program that is usually conducted by schools but not part of

the academic curriculum. It is an outside regular school day activity

(http://www.healthofchildren.com/E-F/Extracurricular-Activities.html). In addition to this

Extracurricular Activities (ECA’s) are simply those activities that is almost anything everyone is

actively and productively involved in. It is the activities that students do outside the classroom

6
including Sports, Community Service, Employment, Arts, Hobbies, and Academic activities

(Barge, M.,2018). According to the concept of Grove, A. (2017) one of the best extracurricular

activity is leadership because it makes an initiative to transform once passion into something

more than a solitary hobby. ECA’s are not just activities that makes you enjoy rather this can

also be beneficial to every individual specifically to students. Extracurricular matter to the

academic performance of students because it help the ability of one learner to be sharpened and

improve. An impressive extracurricular isn't defined by the activity itself, but by what the

student accomplishes with the activity (Grove, A., 2017).

Extracurricular are very important because it helps individual to improve their hobbies

and interest to transform a more significant and useful outcomes and also help them teach that

besides studying there is many other things to discover. (Munavar, R., 2014).

thing that the students do to balance the

academic and extracurricular activities.

This table shows the answers of the respondent to the question, how do they balance their

academics and extracurricular activities, which the result is the majority of the respondents, all of

them says that time management is the best thing to do to balance both.

Discussion

After the data collection procedure and data analysis the researcher found out that

Extracurricular Activity cannot influenced the academic performance of the student because as

what the result obtained overall average of the student engaged in extracurricular activities has a

ranged in 80%-100% which is satisfactory to very outstanding which indicates a very good

academic performance of the student.

But even though extracurricular activity does not influence academic performance, still

student faced many consequences such missing out lessons and quizzes and lack of concentration

18
but still they cope up with it with the use of time management and benefit a maintain passing

grade because of the involvement.

Having fun and passion is the main reason why student engaged in extracurricular

activity, it helps them boost confidence, build a better camaraderie, and maintain physically fit

and healthy.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter shows the summary of the study and the conclusion generated based on the

results of the study. This chapter also states further recommendations given by the researchers

for better implementation of the study.

Summary of Findings

This correlational research study conducted through a survey questionnaire method, aims

to explore on the effects of Extracurricular Activities on the academic performance of Grade 12

students in Sta. Fe National High School. From the conduct of the study, results have showed

several implications, as follows:

1.) The primary reason for students to engage in different Extracurricular Activities is

because of their passion and to have fun.

2.) Due to Extracurricular Activities, the students’ time for studying is diminished. The

tendency is that they cannot focus on their academics. However even though they cannot

focus on their studies, still they receive a satisfactory grade which is supported by the

respondents and says that their grades improved while joining Extracurricular Activities

19
because they have the privilege to maintain a good grade in exchange of their

participation on ECA.

3.) The main difficulty in doing extracurricular activities is the lack of focus and missing

out of lessons and activities. But through time management the students can cope up with

this difficulty.

4.) Overall grades of the students who engaged in extracurricular activities lies under the

range of 80%-100%, which indicates a satisfactory and very outstanding academic

performance.

Now, the researcher can say that extracurricular activities has no direct effect

on the students’ academic performance, however sometimes student cannot focus on studies but

still it’s up to the learner to balance both. Doing two tasks at a time is never easy, but strive and

work hard to attain the goal of success.

Conclusion

The research showed that passion and having fun is the main reason why student decide

to join Extracurricular Activities. But joining extracurricular activity student time split, that

causes lack of focus and missing out of lessons and activities. But also because of the good time

management and benefits from joining Extracurricular Activities, students maintain a good

grades.

The researcher can now say that being an extracurricular member has no effect to the

student performance in academics. Most of the respondent stated that their grades improved after

joining Extracurricular Activities, which is one of the key factor for academic excellence.

Recommendations

20
The researchers of this study would like to recommend future researchers of this study

the following:

1.) Gathering data from a proportion number to the population of SFNHS in order to

produce solid and well-rounded data. Considering that SFNHS has a large population,

conclusion made will be enough to generalize on the effect of Extracurricular Activities

on student's academic performance.

2.) Tackle this topic and do a quantitative research to establish a concrete conclusion.

Considering these recommendations will make the conduct of the study firmer and

reliable.
