Dropout rate is rapidly rising nowadays, which is not a good indicator for a
developing country like the Philippines. According to the report of Philippine News
Agency (PNA) by Cervantes, F. (2018), Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) survey said
that 3.8 million or 1 out of 10 children age 6 to 24 are out of school. There are many
reasons why such problem is attained, it can be financially, lack of interests, shortage of
school facilities, peer pressure and as well as student engagement on different activities at
school such as extracurricular activity that split their attention from many different thing
that causes a conflict on time management that may lead to a low academic performance
that they might take on too much on it, they might give more priority on this than on their
academics. (http://www.healthofchildren.com/E-F/Extracurricular-Activities.html)

On Academic Performance
The most important factor for a high school students are their academics, as high school
learner grades matter the most and has a substantial part in college admission. In order to
succeed in their career, students are encouraged by their teachers and parents to study very well.
Academic Performance is the student’s record of the past semester GPA and expected

METHODOLOGY
This chapter covers the research method, population and sampling scheme, description of
the respondents, research instruments, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data
that were used to come up a credible and valid answers to the research problem.
Research Method
This study is a qualitative type of research. This would try to find out the relationship
hence the researcher would use a correlational type of research method to examine the
relationship between the two variables of this study which is the Academic Performance and
in which a researcher measures two variables, understands and assess the statistical relationship
The target population for this research defined to include only the Grade 12 Students of

The respondents of this study were the Grade 12 students in Sta. Fe National High
School who were selected through purposive sampling. In this sampling method, criteria were set
for the selection of respondents for the study. The respondent must be qualified to the criteria of
being a Grade 12 student of Sta. Fe National High School who is engaged in Extracurricular
Activities.
Research Instruments
This study will use an modified survey instrument from “Undergraduate Research
Journal for the Human Sciences - The Effects of Extracurricular Activities on the Academic

Performance of Junior High Students” (2018), URJHS Volume 5.” from which will be given to
the selected concern respondents. Survey Rating Scales with Close-Ended Questionnaire will be
directly given to the participants, face to face. The primary aimed of this survey instrument is to
identify the effect of engaging extracurricular activity to the academic performance of student

The researchers will undergo the following procedure to be able to realize this study:
First is the sending of consent paper to the office of the school head for the approval of
the research to be conducted. After the consent paper has been approved, the researcher would
immediately conduct the survey using a research questionnaire. And lastly after the survey has
been done, data gathered from this would be evaluated and analysed.

respondents says lack of concentration in academic works is one of the factor gained in joining
ECA. Another effect is that the student become inspired in doing the school works while

Discussion
After the data collection procedure and data analysis the researcher found out that
Extracurricular Activity cannot influenced the academic performance of the student because as

Having fun and passion is the main reason why student engaged in extracurricular
activity, it helps them boost confidence, build a better camaraderie, and maintain physically fit
and healthy.
CHAPTER V
This chapter shows the summary of the study and the conclusion generated based on the
results of the study. This chapter also states further recommendations given by the researchers
Summary of Findings
This correlational research study conducted through a survey questionnaire method, aims
students in Sta. Fe National High School. From the conduct of the study, results have showed
1.) The primary reason for students to engage in different Extracurricular Activities is
2.) Due to Extracurricular Activities, the students’ time for studying is diminished. The
tendency is that they cannot focus on their academics. However even though they cannot
focus on their studies, still they receive a satisfactory grade which is supported by the
respondents and says that their grades improved while joining Extracurricular Activities
19
because they have the privilege to maintain a good grade in exchange of their
participation on ECA.
3.) The main difficulty in doing extracurricular activities is the lack of focus and missing
out of lessons and activities. But through time management the students can cope up with
this difficulty.
4.) Overall grades of the students who engaged in extracurricular activities lies under the
performance.
Now, the researcher can say that extracurricular activities has no direct effect
on the students’ academic performance, however sometimes student cannot focus on studies but
still it’s up to the learner to balance both. Doing two tasks at a time is never easy, but strive and
Conclusion
The research showed that passion and having fun is the main reason why student decide
to join Extracurricular Activities. But joining extracurricular activity student time split, that
causes lack of focus and missing out of lessons and activities. But also because of the good time
management and benefits from joining Extracurricular Activities, students maintain a good
grades.
The researcher can now say that being an extracurricular member has no effect to the
student performance in academics. Most of the respondent stated that their grades improved after
joining Extracurricular Activities, which is one of the key factor for academic excellence.
Recommendations
20
The researchers of this study would like to recommend future researchers of this study
the following:
1.) Gathering data from a proportion number to the population of SFNHS in order to
produce solid and well-rounded data. Considering that SFNHS has a large population,
2.) Tackle this topic and do a quantitative research to establish a concrete conclusion.
Considering these recommendations will make the conduct of the study firmer and
reliable.
