UNIT – I
1. a) Illustrate the principle of minimum total potential energy and minimum total (06)
complimentary energy.
b) Compare the principle of virtual work and complimentary work in structural (06)
analysis.
c) Applying the basic concepts, solve the static and kinematic indeterminacy of (08)
the system shown in Fig (1c) with and without axial effects. Is the structure
stable?

2. a) Illustrate the concept of shear wall in lateral load resisting system with a (08)
sketch.
b) Demonstrate that stiffness and flexibility matrices are inverse of each other. (04)
c) Applying the basic concepts, solve the static and kinematic indeterminacy of (08)
the beam shown in Fig (2c) with and without axial effects. Is the structure
stable?

3. Analyze the continuous beam shown in Fig (3) applying element flexibility (20)
method. The support at A, B and C settles by 150/EI each. Evaluate the joint
displacements. Sketch SFD and BMD.

4. a) Develop an expression for assembled flexibility matrix using the principle of (10)
complimentary work and show how the free displacements and member forces
are evaluated.
b) Develop the flexibility matrix for the beam shown in Fig (4) with respect to the (10)
coordinates indicated. Suitable element coordinates can be adopted. Flexural
rigidity of the beam is uniform.

5. a) Develop an expression for assembled stiffness matrix using the principle of (10)
virtual work and show how the free displacements and member forces are
evaluated.
b) Evaluate the stiffness matrix for the system shown in Fig (5b) with respect to (10)
the free displacements. Axial rigidity of all members is same.

6. Applying element stiffness method, analyze the continuous beam shown in Fig (20)
(6). Draw BMD and SFD. The support at B sinks by 5mm with E = 200GPa and
I = 900 x 106 mm4. EI is constant.

UNIT- IV
7. Analyze the pin jointed frame shown in Fig (7) applying direct stiffness method. (20)
Area of vertical and horizontal members=1500mm 2 and that of inclined
member=750mm2. Modulus of elasticity=200GPa. Determine the joint
displacements at O.
