Learner’s Task
Lesson Overview
In using the English language, we should make sure that the tenses of the
verb are spoken or written correctly. Last week, you have learned to use the
simple tenses of verbs in composing clear and coherent sentences. In this
learning activity sheet, you will learn about the “complete” or “perfect” tense
of verbs.
Perfect Tense of the Verb
1. Past Perfect Tense
A verb in the past perfect tense expresses an action completed in the
past before another past action.
Let us compare the following sentences using both the simple past and
the past perfect tenses:
Simple past: She consulted several doctors.
Past perfect: She had consulted several doctors before she was
diagnosed with leukemia.
Simple past: I never saw such a beautiful sunset.
Past perfect: I had never seen a beautiful sunset before I went to the
island.
Simple past: He gave me some seedlings to plant.
Past perfect: He had given me some seedlings to plant even before I
asked him for some.
Remember: In writing the past perfect tense, the word had is added to the
verb which happened earlier than the other verb. When the word had is
added, the past tense of the verb is changed into its past participle form. A
sentence using the past perfect tense may be written like this: subject + had +
past participle of the main verb.
1
Here is a chart of verbs, their past participle, and the past perfect form.
Regular Verbs Simple Past Past Participle Past Perfect
walk walked walked had walked
clean cleaned cleaned had cleaned
dance danced danced had danced
wipe wiped wiped had wiped
listen listened listened had listened
plant planted planted had planted
happen happened happened had happened
pass passed passed had passed
jump jumped jumped had jumped
Irregular Verbs Simple Past Past Participle Past Perfect
show showed shown had shown
write wrote written had written
bring brought brought had brought
buy bought bought had bought
eat ate eaten had eaten
speak spoke spoken had spoken
fly flew flown had flown
grow grew grown had grown
go went gone had gone
2. Present Perfect Tense
The present perfect tense refers to an action that was either
completed sometime in the past or started in the past and still continuing in
the present.
Let us compare the following sentences using both the simple present
and the present perfect tenses:
Simple present: Dave wants to sing.
Present perfect: Dave has wanted to sing all his life.
Simple present: Mrs. Cruz writes short stories.
Present perfect: Mrs. Cruz has written short stories since 1990.
The present perfect tense has the following uses:
a. puts emphasis on the result
Ex. She has written her answer clearly.
b. signifies an action that is still going on
Ex. The parade has not assembled yet.
2
c. denotes an action that stopped recently
Ex. Sister has cooked lunch.
d. finished action that has an influence on the present
Ex. Edna has lost my wallet.
e. denotes an action that has taken place once, never, or several times
before the moment of speaking
Ex. I have never lied to you.
Remember: Sentences using the present perfect tense can be written with
this format: subject + has/have+ past participle form of the verb. Has is used
when the subject is singular and have if the subject is plural.
There are signal words used with present perfect tense of verbs such as
ever, already, just, never, not yet, till now, up to now and so far.
3. Future Perfect Tense
The future perfect tense of the verb expresses action that will be
completed before another future event begins. Sentences using this verb
usually follow the format subject + will/ shall + have+ the past participle form
of the verb. Signal words like until, by the end of the day, by the end week, or
by the end of the month are among the expressions used with this verb tense.
Examples:
1. My brother will have transferred all the pots before it rains hard.
2. By Friday, I shall have passed the modules to Teacher Yam.
