Course Description:

Introduction to psychology is a fundamental course that provides rudimentary understanding of


human behavior. The concepts from this basic course in psychology form the foundation of business
management courses that deal with human nature. Specifically, its dominant application can be noted
in subjects such as Organization Behavior (OB) and Consumer Behavior (CB) which is critical in
understanding both the Human Resource Management (HRM) and Marketing functions of a business
organization.
Management is an applied social science that demands extensive management of people - either as
employees, consumers or stakeholders. Psychology is a science that deals with human nature and
behavior and hence an understanding of this subject can help the students in grasping the complexities
underlying human behavior in social contexts. This course is geared towards enabling the students to
appreciate the fundamental concepts and theories of human psychology and its application in
management.

Course Objectives:

 To prepare the students with a set of concepts in psychology that is fundamental to


understanding other business management courses.
 To enable the students to critically appreciate the thought process and approach, to
understanding human nature and behavior for application in management functions such as
HRM and Marketing.
 To enable the students to understand the methods of scientific thinking involved in
assessment of human behavior.
Expected Learning objectives:

On completion of this course, the students will be able to,

 Demonstrate the understanding of the concepts and theories of Psychology.


 Appreciate the relevance of the concepts and relate it to other management courses. Analyze
problems and evaluate options for the most logical and optimal solution.
 Enhance written and oral communication through presentations and report writing.
 Demonstrate ethical awareness in research in Psychology.

Expectations from students:

a. Students must report to the respective sessions well before the announced time. Latecomers
will not be permitted to join the class after the scheduled time. If late, the attendance for that
session will be marked as absent.
b. In the class discussion student is expected to participate actively and contribute to individual
and group learning. Evaluation is based on active participation.
c. Evaluation is a continuous process at IBS. Every student needs to be aware of the timelines
given in the section below. Absence from these evaluations will mean non awarding of marks
in that particular component
d. Wherever applicable, group assignments require each student to contribute to the group effort.
This enhances group effectiveness and leads to greater appreciation of working in groups.
e. Utilize the scheduled consultation hour to meet the faculty and clarify doubts if any, seek
explanations and get mentored if needed.
