Language worksheets: Unit 3 answers
Language worksheet 3A
This worksheet should be done after the learners have worked on the kennings and
kenning poems in the first half of Unit 3. It can be used in a differentiated manner by
allowing some learners to be more independent in their brainstorming and planning.
These learners should also take more care over their final draft and include all the
required techniques. You can work with other learners to think of questions relating to
characteristics to help stimulate their ideas for kennings. If they find it too hard to use
alliteration and rhyme as well as the rhythm, use your discretion over what they should
include in their final version. Their main aim is to produce creative kennings.

Language worksheet 3B
This worksheet could be used after reading the poem about colours in Activity 1
in Session 3.4 What is colour? It will stimulate learners to think about different words
for colour in advance of brainstorming words for a colour of their choice. Point out
that some of the words are also ‘gemstones’ – with the name of the stone also being
used as a colour. If they are unsure of the colour in any of the words represent,
encourage them to use a dictionary or a thesaurus to check. They should write
down any new words in their wordbooks to use again at a later stage in their
own writing.

Language worksheet 9A
Language worksheet 9A should be completed after the learners have written their
extra stanza for ‘The Mist’ poem in Session 9.2, Activity 2. It can be used in a
differentiated manner by allowing some learners to be more independent in their
brainstorming and planning. Remind learners to choose words carefully – thinking of
more interesting synonyms and words that alliterate or sound like rain. Work with
groups of learners who are finding it difficult to think of words and descriptions for
rain. Ask them questions about rain and guide them to use their answers in their
planning. When learners write out the final version, encourage creativity over the
shape. Remind them lines can be any length and dotted about to create the
impression of rain, much as lines in ‘The Mist’ in Unit 9 were of different lengths giving
an image of rolling mist.

Language worksheet 9B
Language worksheet 9B could be used to enhance the learners’ vocabulary for animals
before they look at the poem ‘Rooster and Hens’ in Session 9.3. Encourage them to think
of words that describe the ways in which animals move and sound, which would be
useful in a poem. Onomatopoeic words would be particularly interesting although it is
not necessary to mention the term. Language worksheet 9B could be used in a
differentiated manner by allowing some learners to work in pairs, especially those who
have to use a dictionary to understand some of the words in the box. Spend time with
these learners and encourage them to describe what the animals look like to help them
visualise images for the similes they write.
