Performance Task 2.
2 - Fibonacci Sequence
1. Who is Leonardo Fibonacci?
- Leonardo Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician who discovered the Fibonacci Sequence. He
posed and solved a problem involving the growth of a population of rabbits based on idealized
assumptions. Fibonacci was also an Italian number theorist which he popularized the
Hindu-Arabic numeral system in the Western world.
2. Why is the Fibonacci sequence so important in nature?
- Fibonacci Sequence is so important in nature because it relates to the role of phyllotaxis. By
observing how the plants form and structure with their branches and other parts, we can see
their various arrangements in their perspective patterns. The same situation with how rabbits
produce offspring.
3. Show three examples of Fibonacci sequence as seen in nature, include photos and description
each.
a. Spiral Galaxies
- Spiral galaxies follow the form of the
Fibonacci pattern in which the speed of
rotation of the galactic spiral varies the
distance from the center, the radial arms
should become curved as galaxies rotate.
Hence, they follow the properties of the
Golden Rectangle.
b. Pine cones
- When you observe the seedpods of the
pine cones, they are arranged in a spiral
pattern or to put it specifically, each pine
cones have a pair of spirals. The spirals,
which also called Fibonacci spirals, also have
the Fibonacci sequence shown in he number
of sections there are.
c. Tree Branches
- In the tree branches, is also shows the
properties of the Fibonacci Sequence. The main
trunk grows until it produces two branches.
Then one of the branches will split into another
two branches while the other new branch
remains the same. The process continues after
it grows into a fully grown tree.
4. What is the relationship of the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence?
 +
- The Golden Ratio is a unique mathematical relationship in which when

=
which both
equal to 1.618. so when we say that the golden ratio is related to Fibonacci sequence, it means
that the Fibonacci sequences is never ending. It also mean that the higher the Fibonacci number,
the nearer it is to 1.618.
5. Site and describe another important mathematical sequence.
- The other important sequence besides the Fibonacci sequence is the Mersenne primes.
The Mersenne prime numbers are numbers that are one less than a power of two. To
describes it in other words, it has the formula of 2k-1 in which k is an integer greater than or
equal to 2. The first. Mersenne primes are 3, 7, 31, and 217.
