Closed Cycle Operation:: 1. A) Sketch Proper T-S Diagram For A Two Stage Gas Turbine Power Plant With Inter Cooler

1. The document discusses the working principles of open and closed cycle gas turbine systems. It provides diagrams of both systems and notes key differences such as the closed cycle circulating air continuously and the open cycle using fresh air. 2. It also discusses pumped storage hydroelectric power systems and provides a basic overview of how hydroelectric power plants work by harnessing the kinetic energy of flowing water through a turbine connected to a generator. 3. Additional concepts covered include cavitation, heavy water and its properties, CANDU reactors, types of solar reactors, and a magneto hydrodynamics power generation system that directly converts heat to electrical energy.

1. A) sketch proper T-S diagram for a two stage gas turbine power plant with inter cooler.

1. B) working principle of open and closed gas turbine.

Closed cycle Operation:

A closed-cycle gas turbine can be defined as a gas turbine, which
overcomes the drawbacks of the open cycle gas turbine. In this type of
turbine, the air is circulated continuously within the gas turbine with the
help of a compressor, heat chamber, gas turbine, and cooling chamber. The
ratios of pressure, temperature, and air velocities will be constant in this
type. It performs a thermodynamic cycle, which means working fluid is
circulated and used continuously again and again without leaving the
system. A closed-cycle gas turbine diagram is very simple and
contains components like a compressor, heat chamber, and a gas turbine.
The generator, compressor, and cooling chamber are driven by the gas
turbine.

The diagram of this is shown below:

 The gas is compressed in the compressor.
 The compressed gas is heated in the heating chamber.
 The gas turbine helps to generate electricity.
 Electricity is generated by the generator with the use of gas turbine
 The cooling of gases passed from the turbine gets cooled in the cooling
chamber.
Open cycle Operation:
The open cycle gas turbine diagram is shown below. The working principle
of OCGT is when the fresh air enters at ambient temperature into the
compressor wherever both the temperature as well as temperature is
amplified. The air with high force can be entered into the chamber of
combustion where the liquid fuel can bur at stable force. The gas with high
temperature can enter into the turbine wherever it increases to ambient
force and generates electricity.
The main features of open-cycle gas turbines include the following.

 It is applicable for combined cycles

 Open cycle gas turbine efficiency is high thermal up to 44%.
 Long life and reliability is high
 It is used to generate electric power as well as in aircraft propulsion
 The start-up time for the turbine is fast like 2 mins as compared with
steam-propulsion systems because it takes four hours.
 The back work ratio is high up to 50% as compared with less percent
within steam power plants.

2 A) Types of pumped storages system used for hydro power plant

2 B) Working principle of hydroelectric power plant

Hydropower works by harnessing the energy that comes from the flow of
water through a turbine connected to a generator, thus turning it into
electricity. Most hydropower plants store water in a dam, which is
controlled by a gate or valve to measure the amount of water that flows
out.

3 A) Define Cavitation
cavitation, formation of vapour bubbles within a liquid at low-pressure
regions that occur in places where the liquid has been accelerated to high
velocities, as in the operation of centrifugal pumps, water turbines, and
marine propellers.

4 A) what is heavy water. Explain

Heavy water is a compound that is made up of oxygen and deuterium, a

heavier isotope of hydrogen which is denoted by '2H' or 'D'. Heavy water is
also called deuterium oxide and is denoted by the chemical formula D2O.
Heavy Water (Deuterium Oxide): D2O
Boiling Point: 101.4oC
Melting Point: 3.82oC
Dipole moment: 1.87 D

4 B) explain candu reactor with neat sketch

5 A) Types of solar reactors

5 B) Neat sketch of magneto hydrodynamics system

The MHD generation or, also known as magneto hydrodynamic power
generation is a direct energy conversion system which converts the heat
energy directly into electrical energy, without any intermediate mechanical
energy conversion, as opposed to the case in all other power generating
plants.
