PERSONAL BACKGROUND

I am very grateful for getting this opportunity and it is with sincere sense of gratitude that I
pen my brief statement of purpose to the Australian High Commission, New Delhi, India as a
part of student visa application process. Introducing myself, I am Urmi Timilsena, resident of
Motipur, 02 Lamki Chuha, Kailali, Nepal holding a passport number 12082118, was born on
August 30, 2002. There are 3 members in my family including my father, mother and myself.
My father is employed as a Chef in Mantra Café while my mother runs a successful grocery
store. My parents are my source of motivation and self-esteem. I am willing to pursue my
further studies at Victorian Institute of Education (VIE), Sydney, Australia; one of the truly
great, innovative and multi-dimensional institution with its amicable academic and excellent
history.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

To begin with my academic history, I have completed my Schooling (SEE) from Rastriya
Secondary School with XXXXX GPA in 2018 and +2 level from Little Budddha Academy
Secondary School with 3.90 GPA in 2020, specializing in science and taking Biology as
majors. Concerning my interests and ambition to become a health professional, particularly to
serve the aging population, I decided to extend my further education in this field and opted to
pursue an international degree. Hence in order to meet the requirement, I appeared in PTE
test on February 2, 2022 and secured an overall band score of 60 (L=66, S=53, R=53, W=70).

EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE

Since choosing this path, I have been passionately committed to enhancing my experience of
the caring professions and gaining life skills to equip me for this rigorous career choice. At
present I am employed as a Medial Assistant in XXXXXXXXX, wherein I am responsible to
assist nurses in providing appropriate care to the patients, administering medication in right
time, identifying hazard in workplace, attending rounds and so on. This experience has
enabled me to develop strong interpersonal communication skills, in showing empathy and
building a rapport. I have particularly enjoyed with elderly patients, hearing their life stories
and receiving the benefits of their wisdom and experiences. I also learned to gain the respect
of the elderly, whilst remaining compassionate.

REASONS FOR NOT STUDYING IN HOME COUNTRY

Although Nepal is a naturally prosperous nation, the education system is plagued with
numerous flaws. The education system in Nepal focuses in theoretical knowledge rather than
practical aspects of the curriculum. I conducted extensive research on different Nepalese
institutions, such as Tribhuvan University (https://tribhuvan-university.edu.np/), Kathmandu
University (https://ku.edu.np/) and Pokhara University (https://pu.edu.np/) offering the
program of my choice. However, I found that the expertise and facilities offered in Nepalese
colleges and universities are limited with shortage of adequate funds, poor teaching staffs and
outdated syllabus. In terms of personal satisfaction and career potential, Australian degree is
more portable and sellable than the Nepalese one. Therefore, investing to study in Australia
will help me to gain an international degree with international learning experiences skills,
practices, and knowledge, which will be fruitful for me in the long run. Moreover, there are
very limited institutions offering a program in Ageing Support and Community Services,
which compelled me to look for international options.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING AUSTRALIA

I have chosen to study in Australia for a multitude of reasons, the first being the high
recognition of its education system. Australia as a country sincerely stands out as a safe,
multicultural and welcoming for international students. Australia has been ranked as the best
country in terms of education. This ranking clearly shows Australia delivers best education.
Due to the excellent education system, Australia is one of the most preferred nations among
international students to pursue higher education. International students who successfully
complete their degrees from Australian universities are highly sought due to the impressive
international reputation of the Australia carefully regulated by the Australian Government.
Australia is an English spoken country so it will be easier for me to understand my courses
properly. Australian educational experience makes a real difference because it provides
different research opportunities to worthy professionals eager to heighten their career. I found
out that, for over 20 years, Australia has led the world guaranteeing that international students
receive high quality education they expect. According to the Australian government website:
www.studyinaustralia.gov.au, Australia has eight of the top 100 universities and many
renowned institutes in the world. Moreover, Australia has five of the 30 best cities in the
world for students based on students mix, affordability, quality of life and cultural diversity.
Particularly, the educational system of Australia is based on both theoretical and practical
approaches and has quality education around the world. Apart from its excellence education,
Australia is generally a very safe place to live and study for international students.

Likewise, The Education Services for Overseas Student (ESOS) Act 2000 sets out the legal
framework governing delivery of education to overseas students studying in Australia on a
student visa. Australian government is also very supportive and helpful for the international
students because the government of Australia has ensured the rights of the international
students through Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and
Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). The
ESOS promote quality education and protection of international students while CRICOS
registration guarantees that the course and the institution meet the high standards expected by
an international student. Additionally, the Australian Government provides more than AUD
$200 million for International Scholarships. Besides these advantages, I will be able to gain
internationally recognized high quality diploma from a well-known institute. So, I made up
my mind to gift my country something from the International Education. I have already spent
more than 19 years here in Nepal, now I want to add international value to my CV. This
degree from Australia is going to make me highly competitive in Nepal and also around the
world. Therefore, in hope for a better career, I believe Australia would fit well about the
description of not choosing Nepal for my further studies. Among the Australian Cities, I have
chosen Sydney as my study destination in Australia.

REASONS FOR NOT CHOOSING OTHER DESTINATIONS

Before I decided to choose to study in Australia, I did a lot of internet surfing, checked
www.quora.com, www.internationalstudent.com, and various other similar websites to find
information about advantages and disadvantages of studying in various countries. I also got in
touch with plenty of friends and seniors who are currently studying in various countries
around the globe. After plenty of research I finally funneled it down to a few countries which
came to me as top destinations for me; USA, Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia.

First of all, talking about the USA, the country is a great destination for students seeking
excellent education. They provide excellent education with plenty of learning opportunities in
addition to class rooms including hands on learning and Curricular Practical Training and
Optional Practical Training as practical learning opportunities. However, due to frequent gun
related violence news all over media, I could not find it as the best choice for me, safety
being the first priority. Also, the country is quite expensive when it comes to studying in
highly ranked universities. I did some research to find universities offering courses in ageing
support, gerontology and community services, such as University of South Florida
(https://www.usf.edu/cbcs/aging-studies/) and Minnesota State University
(https://mankato.mnsu.edu/academics/academic-catalog/graduate/aging-studies/) to name a
few. However, the fee structures on these universities are exceedingly high.

About the UK, although the institutions have some accredited programs, due to high currency
value, costly universities and the living cost, it did not seem as the best destination for me.
Canada is actually also a great country to go study but again the country is cold throughout
the year which made it hard for me to choose the country.

I loved Germany for its great education system, and it would be amazing to be a student there
but the very complex German language different than any other languages makes a language
barrier which made Germany not a choice for me. Apparently, the best option came to me is
Australia which has various great things to offer to me. I personally like Australia because
from what I have heard from my seniors and friends who studied in Australia, hospitality of
people there is amazing and relations and trusts, people have amongst each other, makes the
country very desirable.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING SYDNEY

I have chosen Sydney over other cities because the beautiful city has remarkable collections
to offer the international students. It is filled with natural beauty and has kept close
connection with great infrastructures to live and study. It is friendly, safe and multi-cultural
city which provides good atmosphere contribution to study. It is the center of attraction with
the presence of Sydney Habour, Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo, Darling Habour, Sydney
Habour Bridge, etc. It has mild weather and easy access to public transport, which is
advantage for student like me. Other than these few of my known friends are studying and
living in sydney which would be a better support for me in the initial days of my life in
Australia to cope up in completely new place and environment which I won’t be able to get in
other cities.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING VICTORIAN INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

The most challenging part about admission is selecting a perfect education provider for
yourself. While doing so, the first thing to focus is quality of education obviously. But there
are few things we cannot ignore, such as availability of public transport, physical
infrastructure, location of college, fee structure, reputation of college and so on. After a lot of
research, I found the Victorian Institute of Education (VIE) is a world-class institution with a
rich history.

VIE is a prestigious institution that delivers an inspired, high-quality educational experience

to students. In its pursuit to deliver a world-class education, VIE focuses on the areas like
learning and teaching, research and community engagement and soon. VIE has the best

CAREER GOALS

After I return to Nepal with the esteemed degree from VIE, I will devote my professional life
to revolutionize and rectify the malpractices rooted in Nepalese society when it comes to
treating the elderly. I understand that the very elderly sometimes has had little say in Nepal
about their lives but placing them in the unfamiliar environment of a nursing or care home is
often a cause of great distress to them and is not the usual way of dealing with the problem in
other parts of the world. Ways must be sought to enable the elderly to make their own
decisions about where they are to reside and to enable them to live at home with appropriate
support, if that is their wish, for as long as is possible. They should also be involved in the
design of care delivery whether at home or in a community or nursed environment. The most
successful retirement communities might be identified and their methods replicated. Families
who accept responsibility for the care of their elders should be encouraged and supported as
far as possible. The family’s role in encouraging beneficial activities by the elderly should
also be made widely known.

The vulnerability of the elderly is also a cause for concern and it is important that ways to
strengthen and extend the protection of the aged against mistreatment of any kind should be
strengthened and rigorously applied. Measuring physical and mental ability is relatively easy
but accurately measuring personal contentment and well-being is a more difficult exercise. It
may be that new measures will need to be researched, identified and applied so that the
effectiveness of remedial actions can be established and adjusted as necessary. Educating
people to value and respect age may be a difficult and long-term exercise but I believe that
determined attempts should be made.

INCENTIVES TO RETURN BACK

Having a dream already of being a health professional in Nepal, I choose certificate in ageing
support and diploma of community services due to several reasons favoring my golden future
in my homeland Nepal. It can fulfil my dream of being a great personality and as well quench
to contribute for nation’s development. After the completion of my course, I’m sure that I
will be capable enough to work in the global market. After diploma, I will return back to my
hometown and contribute my skills and practices for the benefit of Nepal. A person with
proper knowledge, skill in this sector has plenty of opportunities in Nepal because of
developing concept of aged care. I am committed and hardworking person with my dream
and determination to achieve my goals and as being a part of VIE, I believe I can make an
effort to bring new changes in this field.

Because my family lives in Nepal and I am so enamored with the Nepalese way of life, I plan
to return to Nepal after finishing my studies. The subjects I have chosen offer numerous job
opportunities in my home country, so it's a great way for me to contribute to the Nepalese
economy from the knowledge and experience I'll gain from VIE. I want my country to be
well-established and stable in the realm of elderly care support and community services, and
I am confident that accomplishing the program at VIE will give me with ample prospects to
progress through my professional objectives.

FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS

My father and mother (referred to sponsors hereafter) are financially prosperous and can
uphold my expense of studies with no stretch. I have attached the sponsorship statement letter
herewith which guarantees that they are absolutely prepared to manage the costs I am bound
to incur during my stay in Australia. A summary of the statement has been presented below:
 Income from Grocery Store of Mrs. Bishna Devi Jaisi (mother): Nrs. 2,007,000 (AUD
