RNAV
A lot of questions from ATPLQ, maybe 70-80%
Few questions on AWR.
One was about how to find top of TS during cruise when you
have red indication ahead. Tilt up until you see on screen
- hooks and scallops (answer I put as indicates anvil)
- green and yellow
- clear
- magenta
VHF freq range
GLS coverage (choose correct annex)
- 15-20nm +-35 and 20nm +-10
Lots of PBN/GPS questions
-
Odd question about ATC transmits but you hear nothing. What is
happening?
- ATC transmitting but Upper and lower side bands sent but no
carrier wave
- ATC transmitting but carrier wave not modulated
- and 2x receiver transmitting which were clearly wrong
SSB
- HF two way comms
MLS
- SHF, 300kHz spacing, 200 channels
One about DME which I appealed, after 100 aircraft using DME
which aircraft will get a response?
- Depends on aircraft tx power and range to DME (answer I put)
- other options were range to dme, IFR flights get priority and
one that has been in search mode longest should be highest
priority. Appealed as I believe the answer should be depends on
strongest signal.
Quite a few on NDB
- what is scalloping
- RMI 060, course set 055 what is HSI indication (from and half
scale right if I can remember right)
- Interference between ground and sky when out of phase
Antenna shadowing tracking VOR/NDB
- when banking
Not when banking and accelerating
AWR flat plate antenna for mapping mode (in ATPLQ)
- which beam? Think it’s pencil and pointed down
3x SSR Mode S
First one was about what Mode S is compatible with (SSR Mode
A & C and provides info to ADS-B).
Second one was asking what the SSR mode S replies to, be
careful this one. In LO’s it states it RECEIVES from SSR and
TCAS but gives information to SSR and ADS-B. I put SSR/
TCAS.
Other one about 24-bit code hard coded into each transponder
Also another on Mode S is used for
- Unambiguous aircraft addressing
GPS Q’a
- what is the coverage of GPS (-varies with time, greatest at
poles, greatest at EQ or good coverage 24/7)
- where is the aerial fitted (on top)
- one about what freqs PPS transmitted on
- one on what can authorised uses use (PPS as well as less
precise SPS)
- one on GPS transmits ranging signals on L1 and L2
One giving a freq like 111.35
- ILS (correct)
- VOR
- NDB
- ATC
MLS without DME-P gives? (ATPLQ)
- same as ILS
MLS presents (ATPLQ)
- 2D representation of 3D segmented approach
One on markers, said morse was (……), what colour is it?
- white (IM, 3000hz)
A320 PFD given with 4 figures, choose one which must go
around
- All locs were good except one GP was just above the half scale
deflection, all very close together.
MLS with DME-P necessary for
- obtain 3d fix
One about using back beam approach (in ATPLQ but slightly
reworded), OBI will show reverse sensing no matter what
course set but HSI will show correct sense if (either front or
back course) is set.
PBN
What is RNAV 5?
- en route and outside of terminal but 30nm and above MSA
(ATPLQ)
Another gave you a IFR approach chart, said when can you
descend from 2500ft to 2300ft (same as ATPLQ)
Another about NDB approach fix, when you’re abeam when
should you time the leg, didn’t know this one I put when RMI
90/270
No DME/LOS calculations
Why should you follow the Flight director when in an RF turn
- allow precise guidance during turn (answer I put but unsure)
- other answer was as it’s been calculated for TAS and bank
angle (but think that’s for FRT not RF)
One about ILS critical and sensitive areas, controlled. Similar to
ATPLQ but focused on around TX/along runway or for CATI/II
app only.
How to check ILS morse (in ATPLQ but answers different but
similar - NAV in FMS)
- make audible via nav comm panel
NDB - ranges travel further at night
NDB dip
NDB (ATPLQ 622120)
PBN
- load RNP2 but waypoint missing, can you fly? (Similar in
ATPLQ)
- load rNAV5 but waypoint missing can you fly it? Same as
above
ATPLQ 629696, about using MMR - reduces training
How do you send SPI pulse? Ident button on XPDR
Why you shouldn’t use AWR on ground (624754)
One about ASMR same as ATPLQ (detect shape and even
aircraft type or something like that)
What does ATC need to give ATS?
- Overlay of ground, ID and level (623755)
Lots of RAIM and a few AAIM questions so learn that 100%
Fix - 4 sats
FD - 5 sats
FDE - 6 sats
AAIM - GNSS + onboard system (IRS/Baro vnav)
RAIM - GNSS only
GBAS FAS
GPS errors
- one about GDOP and UERE was the answer
- other one about alert within 6 seconds (2x questions about that)
GPS one same as ATPLQ, Glonass and navstar different nav
data but interoperable
What is UERE
When can you get the best GPS fix (something about GDOP, sat
spacing and using L1/L2 compare for ionospheric
compensation)
PSR question 628310
PBN one about what is the definition of availability
Another about what references will you get in regards to linear
and laterally angular guided ops
- answer I put was linear cross track error in nm and angular
error on CDI with deviation bars
Another about what is PBN TSE
- NSE + FTE + PDE
Similar one to ATPLQ about fly over and fly by waypoints -
flyby turn started before waypoint and flyover turn initiated at
waypoint
What RNP spec is used primarily for helicopters
- RNP0.3
What is NSE
One about RNP APCH using baro VNAV. Temp was +10 and
TMIN was -8, ATC tells you to go around but why?
- vnav based on temp calcs (answer I put as in ATPLQ but think
was incorrect)
- VS selected by crew too high
- can’t remember the others
RNAV 5 question 623773
What RNAV/RNP used for SIDS/STARS
What RNAV/RNP can you modify and how
I walked into this exam prepared for
an abundance of new questions
regarding GNSS/PBN, but was
pleasantly surprised.
At least 70% bank, with most of those
questions coming from the ATPLQ
Austro filter.
The exam was about fifty/fifty GNSS/
PBN and conventional stuff.
- Not a single question regarding HSI/
OBS interpretation!
- New question with an Airbus PFD
annex, had to choose out of 4 images
where you would perform a go-around
(1 image had a LOC outside half-scale

image had a LOC outside half-scale deflection)
- 2 questions which in my opinion were outside of the RNAV LO's but had them correct. You had to explain what
you would see on your ADF during a teardrop entry of an NDB hold. The other one asked what radial you had to
setup on your OBS to be eligible to perform a parallel entry to a VOR hold (Had to draw out every option and see
which one was in the parallel 'area')
- New question where you were given an approach plate on which an OM and MM displayed with the GS height at
the OM of 1500ft. You simply had to say that at 1500ft you would see a blue light with continuous low frequency
dashes.
- An RNP approach to LNAV/VNAV minima may use what vertical guidance? Options were 'barometric altimeter'
and 'a method which is approved for the purpose'. Ended up going with barometric altimeter but not sure if it was
correct.
- Question with again an Airbus PFD given which had an NDB tuned to ADF 1. You were given a heading and had
to calculate the relative bearing. Very easy by just reading the bearing from the ADF needle and then using Bearing
TO = HDG + RB
- Why is the use of a FD mandatory when doing a RF turn? Very vague answers, ended up answering 'Because the
turn radius is ca
