1.0 INTRODUCTION
As to complete the group assignment of this course, we were assigned to choose a
company and do an interview regarding on production planning and control. After some
discussion, we decided to choose Nabeylla.co as our selected company to take the interview
in order to finish this course assessment.

Nabeylla.Co is a clothes store that offered a variety of attractive products for working
women and Muslimah as well. Nabeylla.Co has been in operation for more than four years
since 2018. The main focus of Nabeylla.Co is to provide the best selection of clothing for
modern women who work and are always "up to date" with the latest trends. This paper will
explain more on Production Planning and Control of Nabeylla.Co.

Production Planning and Control (PPC) are two strategies that work together to
complete the manufacturing process. Production planning is involved what to produce, when
to produce, how much to produce, and other considerations that suits. Production control is to
ensure that the production schedule is always followed and achieve required production target.
To do a proper PPC, these are the strategies that be implement by Nabeylla.Co and needed
to ensure that these plans can be formulated. Product Strategy, Process Strategy and
Capacity Management Strategy.

Product strategy is a plan that will help businesses in achieving the target through their
product. The importance of product strategy is it helps in clarifies the company's direction and
helps the organization to see well on their production task. It aids in the prioritization of the
product roadmap and improves tactical decisions made by the production team.

The objective of process strategy is to develop a process for producing offerings that
meet customer requirements while staying within cost and other managerial constraints.
Benefits that will gain by Nabeylla.Co when they execute the process strategy are it improved
efficiency production, decreased the cost, increased good output and maintain in producing a
consistent quality.

Capacity management strategy will help an organization in estimating the resources,

employees, time and money to meet the specific demand. It aids in the proper planning of
manufacturing resources. Excess capacity indicates that the resources were not being used
at optimum rate. On the other hand, low capacity denotes that production team was not able
to produce according to what the customer desires at a specific time.

2
2.0 PRODUCT STRATEGY
Product strategy can be defined as it can established the strategic vision of the company for
its product offerings by stating where the products are going, how they will get there and why
they will succeed. In addition, instead of trying to be everything to everyone, the product
strategy allows to concentrate on a feature set and specific target market. Meanwhile, at the
same time, it is also setting the direction for new product development because the company
use product strategy in their business in strategic planning and marketing to determine the
course of the activities of the company.

2.1 Product Detail

Figure 1: Maryam Kaftan

Nabeylla.Co is a manufacturer that operates in the clothing sector of the economy and
fashion or lifestyle industry. Moreover, Nabeylla.Co is also known as a company that selling
the apparel and clothing for women. This is because, nowadays, we can see that many women
in this world especially in Malaysia that are more interested into modest wear’s fashion. For
example, Maryam Kaftan is one of the eleven designs that are best-selling in this company
especially during Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri. In addition, the reason why mostly the
customers prefer this design compared to others because this design is more to trendy and
fashionable which can attract the attention of many people especially teenagers. The design
of Maryam Kaftan is very suitable for doing daily activities and vacations. At the same time,
the material of this kaftan is premium and handled with care which is made of premium como
crepe, ironless, the customers will not be hot while wearing it, have five different colors and it
is free size that suitable for all the customers. Nabeylla.Co only choose the material that will
be comfortable to the customers because they want to ensure that the customers satisfied
with their products and buy it again. This company also very concerned about the quality in
producing their products.

3
2.2 Generating New Product of Nabeylla.Co
The process of introducing a new product to the marketplace is known as generating
new product. It is happened when due to changes in preferences of consumers, increasing
competition and also advances in technology or capitalize on a new opportunity. In addition,
understanding what their market wants, making some improvement based on smart product
and developing new products that meet and exceed their expectations of the customers are
the keys of innovative businesses. For example, Nabeylla.Co generate new product because
some online business stealing the existing design ideas of their products. This company
brought the product innovations that have been modified and have make some improvements
to the marketplace so that the customers will be more satisfied with the design that has been
released by this company.
In business, there are a few opportunities for the company to generate new product
such as understanding the customer, economic change and the last one is sociological and
demographic change. Firstly, understanding the customer means Nabeylla.Co must study the
needs and wants of their customers from the marketing research and market trends. It means,
nowadays, fashion always change day by day so that this company needs to understand the
trend of fashion. At the same time, their target market such as housewife, teenagers, working
women and so on are more interested to the trend and modest wear’s fashion. For example,
Nabeylla.Co create one design of kaftan that are suitable for the mothers because of
breastfeeding friendly. This design also modern, trendy, contemporary design to wear while
doing daily activities and meet the demands of fashion nowadays.
Secondly, economic change can be defined as in the long run, it increases levels of
affluence but in the short run, it causes the price fluctuations and economic cycle or with the
same meaning of up and down economic. It means that when the economic condition is very
good, it is opportunity for the company to produce new product by consider the purchasing
power of the customers. For example, after COVID-19 pandemic, Nabeylla.Co produce a new
product with the high-quality material and low price so that the less able of customers can
afford to buy and wear it. So, in the current situation of the economic, there is no demand from
the customers if this company put the high price for every design of their products.
Lastly, sociological and demographic change means it is appearing in factors as
decreasing family size. This trend alters the size preference of apartments, homes and many
more. Sociological change is more prefer to the way of life. It means, women are career
persons because they have to rush to make something in every way and they need to prepare
necessity to their family such as packing the child’s needs every morning, make breakfast and
so on. So, Nabeylla.Co got some ideas to create design that is ironless. This is because, in a
state of chaos, the customers do not have to worry about personal tidiness because the
products produced are ironless. Meanwhile, demographic change is more prefer to female is

4
greater than male. This is because, before Nabeylla.Co wants to produce new product, they
need to focus female group rather than male group because the demand’s percentage of
females towards the design of Nabeylla.Co’s product is higher than males. So, this company
need to know the types of products that focus to female group and that can attract them to
buy the products that produced by this company.

2.3 Product Development Stages

Product development stages means plan that involves taking a product from initial
concept to final market launch. In addition, the various internal and eternal to the company
sources are used to develop product concepts. Concepts that make it past the product idea
stage progress through various stages with almost nearly review, feedback and evaluation in
a highly participative atmosphere to reduce failure. So, Nabeylla.Co implements product
development stages to test the probable success in generating business.
The first stage of product development is product concept. It means that, before
Nabeylla.Co produce new product or redesign, this company have the idea that comes from
any sources such as internal or external organization. Sources from internal organization
means Nabeylla.Co got the ideas about their new products from the employees, boss and so
on meanwhile sources from external organization means the ideas from the customers,
suppliers, competitors and many more. For example, the customers’ Nabeylla.Co give their
opinions about the product that this company should produced such as the design is more to
elegant, trendy, modern and simple. So, they will produce it based on the request of the
customers.
The second stage of product development is customer requirement. It means, after
Nabeylla.Co proceed the idea about new product or redesign, they will study about the
customer requirement when they want to produce it. For example, what are the customer
requirement if this company produce kaftan or baju kurung based on Quality Function
Deployment (QFD). The third stage of product development is product specification. Product
specification can be defined as how the new product or redesign product will be made, the
material will be used whether premium como crepe or premium italian crepe, what are the
process to produce this product, the dimension and the quality of product.
Design review is the fourth stage of product development. It means, after all items in
the product specification is done, this company will review the design whether it is meet with
the customer requirement or not. In other words, the employees of Nabeylla.Co will try to wear
the product first to ensure the quality of the product that produced will satisfy the customers.
So, if there is something wrong with their product, they will produce it again to guarantee the
quality. The next stage is test market. Normally, for the test market stage, Nabeylla.Co will

5
produce the product in a small quantity because they want to get the feedback from their
customers. So, if the feedback is positive, this company will produce the new product or
redesign product in a large quantity and they will introduce it to another customers. The last
stage of product development is evaluation. For this part, Nabeylla.Co will identify whether the
product that they produced is success or not.

2.4 Product Decision

Next is the process of making product decisions by Nabeylla.co when they are going
to launch new products. As we all know, the objectives are to make sure that the company
can gain a competitive advantage and be able to meet the demands of the marketplace
through the development and implementation of a product strategy. The product decision
includes the selection, definition, and design of products. (Jay Heizer, 2017). So, for
Nabeylla.co, the R&D team would always research on the trends in the market and what
designs, materials, and colors that are popular at that time. Besides, they would also make
improvements and innovations from previous products to the new products. Secondly, after
coming out with a confirmed design, they would choose and pick materials for the products,
and send the design and the materials to the factory to produce a few pieces as a sample for
the staff to try out first. With the sample, the staff of Nabeylla.co themselves would try it and
see what needs to be improved, change, or keep and they keep repeating the process until
they satisfy with the product sample. And lastly, they will notify the factory to start making
production according to the requirement from the staff.

2.5 Product Design

After that, alongside the product decision, Nabeylla.co also faces issues with its
product design that can affect the quality of its product. Because their priority is making sure
their product’s quality is always at the top level, Nabeylla.co applies a robust design where the
production can be changed according to requirements. (Jay Heizer, 2017). So, in making sure
their products are of high quality, one of the methods Nabeylla.co does is they would perform
a test-out process during the production process. As mentioned before, after confirmed with
the design and material for the new product, they would make only a few pieces as a sample
for the staff to test out the products. The test-out process includes seeing if the material is
comfortable or not, whether the cutting is suitable or not, and they would wash the sample to
see the condition of the clothes after being washed. Then, if there is anything they want to fix
whether, for the design or material, they would change it and ask the factory to remake the
sample products with the new design or material and do the test-out with the new sample
products. They keep doing this test-out process until everyone is satisfied with the sample

6
products. Only then, they will ask the factory to proceed with the mass production of the new
products.

3.0 PROCESS STRATEGY

3.1 Strategies in Process Selection

Usually, Nabeylla.Co take 1 to 4 days to produce their products. This is because they
must get the fabric first from the supplier at Kuala Lumpur and then supplier will deliver the
fabric to the factory so that the workers at the factory can sew it and forming the products of
Nabeylla.Co. Then, factory take 2 to 3 days sewing the fabrics so that it will be finished goods.
It also depends on the order from Nabeylla.Co. If the order from Nabeylla.Co is more than as
usual, it will take time to complete the ordered. For example, usually order from Nabeylla.Co
only 100 pcs per day and take 2-3 days to finished it, but at that day, the order were 300 pcs
per day, and it will take 5-6 days to finish it. So, it will take time to complete the ordered that
Nabeylla.Co made. The variation of the products that Nabeylla.Co made were 11 design which
are 5 design a pair of blouse and pants named Naura Tunic, Qayra Set, Deejaa Set, Camelia
Suit and Sofea Suit. Other 2 design where kaftan include Inaya Kaftan and Kaftan Maryam
also 4 designs were baju kurung such as Anggun Kurung, Celynda Kurung, Medina Kurung
and Dahlia Kurung.
In addition, Nabeylla.Co produce 100 pcs per day of their products to the customer
that buy thru online platform or at the store. When enter the middle of the month which are
date from 10 until 24 of the months, the production of the product will slow rather than the end
of month. The production is still ongoing, but it will slow because of the customer prefer to buy
at the end of month because they already get their salary. When the date 25 until 8
approaching, the production keep increases because the demand from the customer also
increases. At that date, the production will hit until 300 to 500 pcs per day. It is because many
people will be shopping at the end of the month.

Moreover, Nabeylla.Co will do redesign for their product to make improvement of their
design of product to attract new customer. They will redesign their product follow the new trend
and fashion nowadays. With this, customer will be interested to buy the product from
Nabeylla.Co because they produce product according to current trends. For example, they
want redesign for kaftan. At first, they produce 8 colors for kaftan. So, because of high demand
for kaftan, they redesign the kaftan. They put the pocket in front of the kaftan and change the
color of kaftan. Before this, they only produce kaftan with bold colors like red, yellow, green,
and purple but they did not produce soft colors. Then, after redesign they add the soft colors
because of young people nowadays like soft colors rather than bold. So, the demand for new

7
design of kaftan keep increases until they need to make pre order because of high demand
and stock for kaftan always sold out.

Next, Nabeylla.Co will proceed the orders after customer make payment. It means
when customer pay the product from online platform, they will proceed the order for the
customer. All product at Nabeylla.Co was ready stock, but once the product was high demand
until out of stock, they will restock the item that already sold out, but it takes time. It is because
factory need time to make it. So, if the product out of stock, Nabeylla.Co will inform to the
customer item that they want out of stock and ask whether they willing to wait or not. If not,
Nabeylla.Co will refund the money to the customer has been paid.

3.2 Role of Technology In Process Selection

For the machine parts, based on the interview, there are only one machines that
Nabeylla.Co use in order to produce all their products. It is included normal sewing machines
that is used to sew the products based on the design that they created already. It also includes
the process like to make collar, collar bend, pocket hemming, pocket attach, zipper attach and
more. Based on the design that they created, the workers there will cut it based on the order
from the headquarters. So, from the interview, the sequence orders on how they created the
order is that the headquarters will contact the workers at the factory first. Soon after the order
came in, the headquarter will tell the factory worker on how much the product they will
produced, which type of products they will produced, the design that they will used to produce
their products, the size and color of the products, and what kind of clothes they need to use.
After they submitted the details about the order, the suppliers will deliver all the requests raw
materials to the factory so that the factory can produce the products as soon as possible. The
raw materials will come in the exact quantity that the Nabeylla.Co’s headquarter stated to the
suppliers. For the workers, it is stated in the interview that Nabeylla.Co only take the
experienced workers only for the process in the factory. Since the machine that they used for
the producing process only take the staff who have only sewing clothes experiences, so to
ease their process, Nabeylla.Co only take the workers who is already have experiences with
sewing machine without seeing their educations level, age or gender.

For the stock, the Nabeylla.Co have its own warehouse to store their products. It
includes all the products. When the factory finished producing their products, the products will
be delivered to their warehouse. After that, soon as they got the products, Nabeylla,Co will
package the product and sort it out based on the customers’ location. Next, the company will
have its ready to be send out the purchased products to its respective customers. Apart from
that, for the products that still do not have its customer, it will have its stored in Nabeylla.Co’s

8
warehouse and be used when the customer’s purchase came in. Since the product is clothe,
it will not give the Nabeylla.Co that much problem since its do not have the expired date like
foods or other products. Plus, the Nabeylla,Co’s clothes have its long lasting lifetime longer
than other products since they use a quality raw materials which is premium como crepe and
premium italian crepe which is famous for its durabality since the crepe fabric is typically made
from silk or wool cloth which is known for its outstanding durability and crispy texture. It will
only eventually break down when it is only frequently worn. Plus, it is also famous because it
has wrinkle resistant which is good if the company want to store the products for a long time.

For the cost of production process, Nabeylla.Co have its own expenses they need to
cover for their production process. Firstly, in terms of raw material, Nabeylla.Co have eleven
designs for their products. All eleven designs for Nabeylla.Co’s products only use two fabrics
which is premium como crepe and premium italian crepe. Other than that, the company also
need to cover the zipper since all their products have zipper at the back of the clothes. Apart
from that, Nabeylla,Co also need to cover their expenses for the clothes’ label. The label is
used to state the care instructions and the fabrics included in the clothes and size of the
clothes. Plus, it is also helping the customer to identify the company’s logo as it will reflect the
quality of the brand. The labels “Nabeylla” will be sewed at the back around the neck part.
Next, is the packaging. Nabeylla.Co used the plastic packaging in order to pack their products
since they use delivery for their business transactions. Moreover, the company also need to
cover up for the cost of transportation. It includes fuel, parking fees, meals, tolls fee and others.
For the information, the Nabeylla’s factory is located in Kuala Lumpur and their headquarters
is based in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Lastly, staff wages. Wages for the staff is depend on how
much products they produced. If the worker produces 100 pieces of cloth, they will subtract
with the fee of producing one piece of cloth.

9
4.0 CAPACITY MANAGEMENT STRATEGY
Production capacity can be defined as how an organization manages its available employees,
time and resources to meet demand in the most efficient way possible. In other words, capacity
means that the maximum output that a business can maintain while producing a good or
offering a service. Management must acknowledge production process obstacles in order to
plan for capacity. Capacity can refer to a manufacturing process, the distribution of human
resources, technical thresholds, or a number of other related ideas depending on the type of
company or business that they did. Nabeylla.Co by all means use capacity management in
order for their company know how much their system can run at full capacity.

Design Capacity Effective Capacity

= maximum capacity or output rate = Design Capacity – lost output unavailability
= 63 clothes / hour x 8 hours = 504 clothes / day – 189 clothes / day
= 504 clothes / day = 315 clothes / day
Actual Output
= Effective Capacity – lost output during unplanned resource idleness
= 315 clothes / day – 6 clothes / day
= 309 clothes / day
Efficiency Utilization
= Actual Output / Effective Capacity = Actual Output / Design Capacity
= (309 / 315) x 100 = (309 / 504) x 100
= 98.10% = 61.31%
Break-even Point in Unit
= (Total Fixed Cost) / (Selling Price – Variable Cost)
= (RM 32) / (RM 59 – RM 14)
= 0.7111 unit
Break-even Point in Price
= (Total Fixed Cost) / 1 – (Variable Cost / Selling Price)
= (RM 32) / 1 – (RM 14 / RM59)
= 41.95 @ RM 42

4.1 Design and Effective Capacity

Design capacity is the maximum theoretical output of a system in each period under
ideal conditions. For Nabeylla.Co, it explains that with 8 hours working time multiplying with
amount of clothes produce which is 63, it summarises that production team could produce 504
clothes per day. Effective Capacity explain the design capacity minus with lost output because

10
of unplanned resource unavailability such as preventive maintenance and machine setups.
On the other hand, actual output is the effective capacity minus with lost output during
unplanned resource idleness such as machine breakdown and absence of workers.

Efficiency is the percentage of effective capacity actually achieved. Meanwhile,

Utilization is a measure of how effectively a company uses its productive capacity. It is the
relationship between the theoretical maximum output and the actual output. 98.10% of
efficiency is evaluates on the production efficiency in producing the product and Nabeylla.Co
produces 61.31% of what management determined was ideal and indicating that 38.69% of
their resources are underutilized.

4.2 Break-Even Analysis

The objective of break-even analysis is to determine the point in prices and units where
cost equals revenue. The point is called as break-even point. To achieve profitability, the firm
must operate above the level point. This calculation of break-even is using RM 59 as the
selling price because in 11 designs of the product in total, 5 of them were selling in the same
price as RM 59. For Nabeylla.Co, their break-even point in unit is 0.71 unit while RM 42 for
break-even unit in price. It describes that Nabeylla.Co need to produce at least 0.71 unit of
clothes and sell at RM 42 as lowest price to cover all fixed and variable costs.

4.3 Constraint in Capacity Management Strategy

Defects are an unavoidable part of the manufacturing process. No matter how well
quality control measures are implemented throughout the workplace, defects in the final
finished goods are unavoidable. According to Miss Mimi, she stated that if the production team
deliver a defective product to headquarters, it will be returned to the production team and need
to rework again on the designed product. Some of the common mistake that production tend
to do is broken stitches, wrong measurement and zipper damage.

In order to smooth the process of production, Nabeylla.Co implement batch processing

in their production team. If the demand was too high, Nabeylla.Co will ask the customer to
pre-order the product that they wanted. When customers start entering the store, they will
begin to give a visit and start browsing on the product that they wanted to buy. Customer will
not only attract to the display product because they might as well be enticed with the promotion
and deals that been mentioned by Nabeylla.Co at the store. If this situation occurs, staff will
inform the customer to pre-order on product they wanted. Pre-order help Nabeylla.Co in
increasing their sell and maintain the customer relationship as well. It goes same ways to

11
online customer. If an online customer wanted to have the product that not available on the
website, they also need to make a pre-order for their demand.

Additionally, Miss Mimi also adds up on another tactic in smoothen the process of
production which is to negotiate with the customer. Negotiation is one of the ways to solve the
issue that is acceptable to both parties. Nabeylla.Co will ask the customer to wait in a few days
for the product to be available back in the stock. They will also offer some other deals to
comfort the waiting days of customers. Miss Mimi stressed on that it is important to keep a
good relationship between the customer because they will influence other customer with word-
of-mouth marketing.

Finally, the last questioned that been asked to Miss Mimi is does capacity planning
related to the profit of company? She said, “definitely yes”. It is because as Nabeylla.Co
planned well the strategy, it will avoid bottlenecks, wasted resources, employees, time and
money, as well as delays and also shortage to the customers. If all of the capacity
management were designed and planned effectively, it will maintain the production cycle as
well as meet the operations budget and Nabeylla.Co will obtain more profit in their business.

4.4 Strategies in Capacity Management

Nabeylla.Co’s main product is cloth. Based on the information given, the factory for
producing the clothes is located in Kuala Lumpur while their headquarter is located in Kota
Bharu, Kelantan. At the start of their business till now, Nabeylla.Co have around 20 workers
at the factory working under their company. It includes all the works including making the
collar, collar bend, pocket hemming, pocket attach, zipper attach and more. In addition,
Nabeylla.Co’s headquarter have around 19 staffs work there. Mostly the works there cover
the order process, contact the supplier regarding the raw materials, inform the factory if there
are any custom requests from the customers and soon, they got the product from the factory,
the workers there will settle the postage process.

According to what interviewee said, Nabeylla.Co seems to use short-range planning

for their business development. Short-range planning involves process that the company can
see the processes within a year. Short-range planning focus on problems in internal issues
and mostly their solutions is straight forward. For example, complaints from the customer or
problems in management. This can be shown on how Nabeylla.Co handle their problems in
shortage of demands.

In terms of demand, Nabeylla.Co have its way in controlling their demand in order for
them to know their full extent in handling demand. According to the interview, most of the time,

12
the demand for their product is high when it is at the end of the month. Mostly around 27th until
the beginning of the next month. Nabeylla.Co’s demand is doubled compare with their normal
business days. The normal demand they mostly get is around 100 pieces of clothe per day
but when the date is around at the end of the month, Nabeylla.Co get an order around 300
pieces of cloth per day until 1st or the 2nd of the next month. Besides at the end of the month,
their demand also depended on whether there is a special day or not. Based on what
interviewee said, when there is Hari Raya Aidilfitri, their demand is huge compare to other
days. Normally, Nabeylla.Co used to sell around 12,000 pieces of cloth each month, but when
the Hari Raya is celebrated, they will get mostly around 30,000 pieces of cloth from the
customers.

So, in order to deal with the shortage of products, Nabeylla.Co use pre-order tactic
which is the customer placed an order for the products when they are not currently in stock.
When the product is available, the staff will ship to the customer. By using this tactic, it will
allow customers to order products when it is available.
