Question 1
A 3 phase, 15𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀, 13.6𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘, 50𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 hydro generator is supplying real power of 10𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀.
Field excitation is adjusted such that the terminal voltage and internal voltage of the
machine are same as the rated voltage. The machine has negligible armature
resistance and per phase reactances as 𝑋𝑋𝑑𝑑 = 9.864Ω and 𝑋𝑋𝑞𝑞 = 8.014Ω. Find the
following,
a) torque angle of generator
b) stator current
c) power factor
Question 2
The generator in question 1 is now connected to an infinite bus having voltage of
13.6𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘. The connecting link has a reactance of 1.356Ω. The field is adjusted such
that the internal voltage of the generator is 16.59𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 and it delivers 10𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 power to
the infinite bus. Find the following
a) the angle between the internal voltage and the infinite bus voltage
b) generator output current
c) terminal voltage of the generator
d) the angle between the internal voltage and generator terminal voltage
Question 3
A generating station consists of four synchronous generators operating at 120𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀,
15𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘, 0.85 power factor lagging with identical speed droop characteristics operating
in parallel. The governors on the generators’ prime movers are adjusted to produce a
3𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 drop from no load to full load. Three of these generators are each supplying a
steady 75𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 at a frequency of 60𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻, while the fourth generator handles all
incremental load changes on the system while maintaining the system's frequency at
60𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻.
a) At a given instant, the total system load is 260𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 at 60𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 frequency. What
are the no-load frequencies of each of the system’s generators?
b) If the system load rises to 290𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 and the generator’s governor set points do
not change, what will be the new system frequency?
c) To what frequency must the no-load frequency of the fourth generator be
adjusted in order to restore the system frequency to 60𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻?
d) If the system is operating at the conditions described in part (c), what would
happen if the fourth generator is tripped off the line (disconnected from the
power line)?
