JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

3. TREATMENTS :
Sheet steel is coated with metallic and non-metallic coatings to provide barrier
protection against corrosion, extend product lifetime, and improve appearance. Coating
materials include paint, zinc, calmium, aluminum, chrome, nickel, nickel-chromium, iron
oxide, and silver.

3.1. USES :
● corrosion prevention
● Fire resistant
● increase a material's wear resistance and
aesthetic appeal

3.2. METHODS :
A. Corrosion:
1. Application of zinc coating – steel galvanization
it’s a process which creates a coating of zinc over
a metal surface.
2. Application of paint coating – painting creates a coating barrier to moisture
(which also beautifies metal structures).
Both methods are intended to provide unfailing functioning of steel structure (for a
specified period of time). The better the durability of the coating, the higher the price of
protection.

B. Fire:
1. Intumescent Coatings
Aka intumescent paints
The coatings will undergo a chemical reaction and expand when exposed to extreme
heat.
commonly used in steel exposed to the general public.
2. Rigid Board Fireproofing can be installed quickly and easily.
provides the right fireproofing requirements as well as thermal and acoustic control. can
be mechanically fastened and can prevent pests and termite attacks.

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

When left unprotected, steel will corrode in almost any environment.Alloy coatings stop
corrosion by providing two protections - a physical barrier and cathodic action.

3.2.1. BARRIER PROTECTION :

● Alloy coatings provide a continuous, impervious metallic barrier that does not
allow moisture to contact steel.
● Without direct moisture contact, there is no corrosion.
● However, since zinc gradually erodes due to its much slower degradation in the
presence of water and atmospheric pollutants in open air applications, barrier life
is proportional to coating thickness.
● This subject has been researched for many years and the literature is well
supplied with reports on zinc's performance in different climates, with different
alloy additions to the coating and at different coating thicknesses.
● Within the interior of a structure (wall framing and roof trusses) corrosion is not a
consideration provided the exterior membrane maintains its integrity.
● Barrier coating longevity can be improved a number of ways other than by just
increasing coating thickness

3.2.2. CATHODIC PROTECTION :

● Another outstanding protection mechanism is the remarkable ability to

galvanically protect steel.
● When bare steel is exposed to moisture, such as at a cut edge or surface
scratch, steel is protected by the sacrificial loss of zinc in the vicinity of the
exposed steel.
● In the immediate presence of zinc, steel will not corrode until all the zinc has
been sacrificed.
● This is particularly important for coated steel sheets since corrosion will
continually undercut both aluminum or paint barrier coatings.
● The presence of zinc is the key to cathodic protection.

JSW Steel Coated Products Ltd. is India’s largest manufacturer and

exporter of Coated Steel as well as Color Coated Steel.
● Galvanized and Galvalume (Aluminum and Zinc coated) steels are an ideal
material for a multitude of building applications.
● In the residential construction market, coated steel has particular and
cost-effective applications in framing , roofing , rain ware (gutters and
downspouts) , ductwork (heating/cooling and venting) and household
appliances.

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 12

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

3.2.3. PRE COATED METAL (PCM)

● A cleaned, pre-treated Galvanized or

Galvalume steel sheet in coil form is applied
with various layers of organic coatings such
as paints, vinyl dispersions or laminates.
● These coatings are applied in a continuous
process known as Coil Coating.
● The steel thus produced is a prepainted,
prefinished ready-to-use material.
● PPGI is the material which uses Galvanized
& Galvalume steel as the basic substrate
metal.
● It can be used both in home appliances and
construction.

3.2.4. VINYL COATED METAL (VCM)

● Essentially, the metal is coated with a vinyl

film that has unique patterns and colours
● Natural textures of wood, marble and zinc
can be easily reproduced to add character
to construction and home appliances.

3.2.5. Galvanized Steel

● A zinc coating, usually hot-dipped, in which the
zinc and steel form a metallurgical bond.
● The thickness of a hot-dipped coating can be
varied from a thin zinc/iron alloy layer to heavy
applications suitable for extended outdoor
exposure.
● Electrogalvanized also a zinc coating, but
applied
in a cold, electrolytic bath rather than a molten
zinc bath.
● Traditionally the coatings are thinner than hot-dipped and not suitable for
extended outdoor exposure.
● A proprietary zinc alloy coating (5% aluminum) with improved corrosion
resistance and formability compared to zinc alone.

● The product is a 55% aluminum-45% zinc alloy
coated steel sheet.

3.2.7. Galvanneal
● A zinc-iron coating produced bypost-heating a
hot- dipped coating. It is often used where paint is
to be applied to the coated sheet.
● The galvanization is made through the
hot-dipping (Hot-dip galvanizing) process and an
immediate in-line
annealing and gives a very fine grayish matte
finish.
● Galvanneal does not flake off its galvanized coating when formed, stamped, and
bent.
● The very fine matte finish acts like a primer, allowing paint to adhere easily, and
is very rust proof.
● Galvanneal has better weldability.

3.2.8. Galfan

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

4. BOLTED JUNCTIONS
● A bolt is a type of threaded fastener.
● It is generally made of metal.
● Bolted steel connection is one of the most common
elements in steel structure.
● It consists of a bolt that is secured with the
mating of screw threads on the other end.

APPLICATIONS OF BOLT
● When the parts that are fastened, require
frequent dismantling and reassembly.
● When the parts that are fastened, are made
of material which is too weak to make durable
threads.
● When the parts that are fastened have medium
● thickness. For example, beams, flanges or plates
etc.

INSTALLATION
The bolt is placed through a pre-cut hole in the objects,
after which a nut is twisted and secured onto the mating
thread at the end of the bolt. The combination of the bolt
and the nut is known as a bolted joint.

ADVANTAGES OF BOLTED JOINTS

➢ Bolted joints offer several advantages, one of which is high tensile strength. Of course,
tensile strength reflects the maximum amount of stress or tension the bolted joint can sustain
at any given time without breaking.
➢ Bolted joints have a naturally high tensile strength. Furthermore, the tensile strength of a
bolted joint can oftentimes be increased by changing the fasteners or clamp load.
➢ Another reason why bolted joints are so popular is because they are simple and easy to
create. It typically takes less than a minute to slide a bolt through two or more objects and
cap it off with a nut. And even if you’re unfamiliar with bolted joints, you shouldn’t have
trouble creating one.

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 17

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

DISADVANTAGES OF BOLTED JOINTS

➢ Overloading, for instance, may cause a bolted joint to fail prematurely. If the operating force
exceeds the bolted joint’s clamp load, it will fail.
➢ Bolted joints can also fail from corrosion. if the nut or bolt begins to corrode, the nut may
loosen to the point where it’s no longer able to support the operating force.

5. RIVETED JUNCTIONS

● A rivet has a cylindrical shank with a head at one end.

● It is used to make permanent joints between two plates.

APPLICATIONS OF RIVETED JOINTS:

● It is used where we have to avoid after thermal effects,
as in the case of welding.
● Used for metals which have poor weldability
● Used for heterogeneous materials like asbestos friction
lining and steel

INSTALLATION
Rivet is inserted into the holes of plates (which are to be joined)
and then its protruding part is upset by a hammer.

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 18

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

ADVANTAGES OF RIVETING
● Relatively inexpensive method. The production of the rivet is cheap.
● Rivet can be used in joining ferrous as well as a nonferrous metal like aluminium
and copper alloys.
● Rivet can be used in joining of nonmetallic material like wood, plastic, asbestos
sheet etc.
● Ability to make joints regardless of the location. (Vertical, overhead, etc.)
● Riveted joints are more reliable than other methods in applications where the
joint is subjected to excessive vibration and impact forces.
● High shear strength, good fatigue resistance.

DISADVANTAGES
● Riveting takes more labor time than welding. Additional operations like lay out
and drilling holes are necessary. The labor cost of rivet joints is high.
● Stress concentration at the rivet holes of metal plates.
● The holes may weaken the working cross section of the plate. Then the
additional thickness is required to compensate for this problem. This additional
thickness and overlapping of plates for riveting increases metal consumption.
● It has more weight than a welded joint due to strap-plate and rivets.
● They typically do not make a tight or leak-proof joint unless using hot rivet or
sealant along the rivet.
● The riveting process is noisier than welding due to hammer blowing.

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 19

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

6. FINISHING MATERIAL APPLIED TO BOLTS AND RIVETS

Zinc: Its coating acts as a sacrificial anode,

protecting the underlying metal.
It is applied as fine white dust.

Black oxide: Its coating is mostly used for

aesthetic purpose. It does not enlarge the
dimensions of the bolt. It is a processed black rust.

Chrome: Its coating gives a bright, reflective

finish. It is decorative and very durable.

7. WELDED JUNCTIONS
● Welding is a process whereby two or more parts are fused together.
● They are fused by means of heat, pressure or both forming a joint as the parts cool.
● Usually used on metals and thermoplastics but can also be used on wood.
● The completed welded joint may be referred to as a weldment.

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 20

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

APPLICATIONS OF WELDED
JOINTS:

● Commonly used across a range of

industries including aerospace,
automotive, energy and construction
amongst others.
● Used to join metals, thermoplastics or
wood for a variety of applications.
● Used for homogeneous materials.

PROCESS

Welding is a high heat process which melts

the base material. Typically with the addition of
a filler material.Heat at a high temperature
causes a weld pool of molten material which
cools to form the join, which can be stronger
than the parent metal. Pressure can also be
used to produce a weld, either alongside the
heat or by itself. It can also use a shielding gas
to protect the melted and filler metals from
becoming contaminated or oxidized.

ADVANTAGES OF WELDING
➢ No change in cross sectional area
➢ High load carrying capacity
➢ Various shapes can be joined
➢ More economical as less material is required.
➢ The efficiency of the welded joint is more than that of the riveted joint.
➢ The welded joints look better than the bulky riveted/butted joints.
➢ Complete rigid joints can be provided with a welding process.
➢ The alternation and addition to the existing structure is easy.
➢ No noise is produced during the welding process as in the case of riveting.
➢ The welding process requires less work space in comparison to riveting

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 21

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

DISADVANTAGES OF WELDING

➢ No change in cross sectional area

➢ Welded joints are more brittle and therefore their fatigue strength is less
➢ Due to uneven heating & cooling of the members during the welding, the members may
distort resulting in additional stresses and changes the metallurgical properties.
➢ Skilled labor and electricity are required for welding.
➢ No provision for expansion and contraction is kept in welded connection & therefore,
there is possibility of racks.
➢ The inspection of welding work is more difficult and costlier than the riveting work.
➢ Defects like internal air pocket, slag inclusion and incomplete penetration are difficult to
detect.

8. TRANSPORTATION

● Steel bars are transported bundles, which are

wrapped with fastening belts every 2 to 3 meters.
● Steel coils are least subject to mechanical
influences, deformations, dents and scratches.
● Lightweight packaging is used to transport the
metal rolls for short distances.
● Coils are covered with cardboard or polymer film
to protect against rain and attached around the
perimeter with metal bands. If the international
transportation of steel coils takes more than 24
hours, more reliable packaging is required.
● Packing material in several layers covers not only
the outer but also the inner cylinder of the steel
roll, with special protection installed on both
ends.
● During sheet metal transportation, the bundles are tightly tied with fastening
straps and fixed on the vehicle.

JINDAL SOUTH WEST STEEL LTD. 22

JSW MARKET SURVEY REPORT

● Bottom and top packs are covered with sheets of cardboard or polymer
film, which protect against precipitation, temperature, and humidity
fluctuations.
● Coil trailers are used for sheet metal transportation, the transportation of
steel coils, sheets, rolled tin, non-ferrous alloys, metals bound in bundles,
and pipes from 7 to 21 m in length
● The transportation of metal coils and other metals by air is more expensive
but is the quickest way of delivery.
