Design of Horizontal Curves With Superelevation Design Data

This document provides calculations for designing a horizontal curve for a roadway with the following parameters: carriageway width of 3.75m, 1 lane of traffic, design velocity of 50 kmph, and pavement camber of 2.5%. Given a radius of curve of 120m, the superelevation is calculated as 0.0930 which is within the allowable maximum of 0.07. Based on the superelevation and coefficient of friction, the allowable velocity is calculated as 57.91 kmph, which meets the design velocity. Additional widening of 0.7m is required. The minimum length of transition curve is calculated as 35m based on the rate of change of centrifugal acceleration, and

INPUT DATA

1 Width of the carriageway = 3.75 m

2 Number of Lanes = 1 lanes
3 Velocity = 50 kmph
4 Pavement Camber = 2.5 percent 0.025
5 Superelevation = 7 percent

DESIGN OF HORIZONTAL CURVES

With superelevation

>50 kmph ………...…ok

DESIGN DATA

Radius of Curve, R = 120 m

Deviation Angle = deg.

Velocity, V = 50 kmph

SUPERELEVATION

Superelevation, e = (V2) / (225 x R)

= (50 ^ 2) / (225 x 120)

Superelevation Calculated = 0.0930 OK

Allow. Max. Superelevation, e = 0.07

(CONSIDERED FOR DESIGN AS PER CL.10.2.1, IRC 86-1983)

Superelevation adopted = 0.07

Coefficient of Friction, f = 0.15

Allowable Velocity, Va = (127 x R x (e+f)) 0.5

= SQRT(127 x 120 x (0.07 + 0.15))

= 57.91 kmph

>50 kmph ………...…ok

EXTRA WIDENING

Number of Lanes, n =1 lanes

Length of Wheel Base, l = 6.1 m

MECHANICAL +
= PSYCHOLOGICAL WIDENING

= (n x l2 / 2R) + (V/ 9.5 x R 0.5)

= [(1 x 6.1 ^ 2 / 2 x 120) + (50/ 9.5 x sqrt(120))]

= 0.64 m
say = 0.70 m

Extra Widening, We
Extra Widening is provided Linearly on either sides of Carriageway.
MINIMUM LENGTH OF TRANSITION CURVE (IRC : 38 - 1998, Clause 7.3)
Length of transition should be greater of the two values derived from considerations of
(1) Rate of change of centrifugal accelaration & (2) Rate of change of Superelevation

(1) Rate of Change of Centrifugal Acceleration (subject to a max. of 0.8 and min. of 0.5)

Allowable rate of Centrifugal Acceleration, C = 80 / (75 + V)

= 80 / (75 + 50)

= 0.64

say = 0.64 m/sec3

LENGTH OF TRANSITION, Ls = 0.0215 x V /(C x R)

= 0.0215 x 50 ^3 / (0.64 x 120)

= 34.99 m

say = 35 m ……………………….( 1 )

(2) Rate of Change of Superelevation

Width of Pavement, W = 3.75 m

Width of widened Pavement, B = W + We

= 3.75 + 0.7

= 4.45 m

Total Superelevation, E = Bxe

= 4.45 x 0.07

= 0.312 m

Rate of Change of Superelevation for Mountaneous = 1.67 per cent (1 in 60)

and Steep terrain, N
= 150 (for Mountaneous and Steep terrain)

Assuming that the Superelevation is provided by rotating the Carriageway about the center line 0.6667
LENGTH OF TRANSITION, Ls = N x E/2 1.6667

= 150 x 0.312 / 2

= 23.40 m
Adopting the Highest of the two values say = 24.00 m ……………………….( 2 )

LENGTH OF TRANSITION CURVE, Ls = 35.00 m
