PART – A (5*2 =10 Marks)

1. State the condition for the equation A uxx + 2 B uxy + Cuyy = f ( ux , uy , x, y) to be


(a) elliptic, (b) parabolic, (c) hyperbolic where A, B, C are functions of x and y.
2. What is the classification of fx – fyy = 0?
3. State Schmidt’s explicit formula for solving heat flow equation.
4. What is the classification of one dimensional heat flow equation.
5. Write down Crank – Nicolson formula to solve ut = uxx.
6. Write a note on the stability and convergence of the solution of the difference equation
corresponding to the hyperbolic equation utt = a2 uxx.
7. Write down the standard five point formula to solve Laplace equation?
8. What is the purpose of Liebmann’s process?
9. Define a difference quotient?
10. Discuss the diagonal five point formula and standard five point formula?

PART – B ( 8 + 16 + 16 = 40 Marks)

11. a) Solve 2ut = uxx given u ( 0 , t) = 0, u ( 4, t) = 0, u (x,0) = x ( 4 – x ). Assume h = 1, find


the values of u upto t = 5. (8 Marks)
b) Solve ut = uxx given u ( x , 0 ) = 0, u ( 0, t) = 0, u ( 1, t ) = t for 2 time step. (8 Marks)
c) Solve uxx + uyy = 8 x2 y2 in the square mesh given u = 0 and the four boundaries
dividing the square into 16 sub squares of length 1 unit. (8 Marks)

12. a) i) Solve ut = uxx given u ( 0 , t) = 0, u ( 5, t) = 0, u (x,0) = x2 ( 25 – x2 ). Assume h = 1,


find the values of u upto 5 seconds. (8 Marks)
ii) Solve ut = uxx given u ( 0 , t) = 0, u ( 1, t) = 0, u (x,0) = Sin π x, 0 < x < 1 (8 Marks)
b) i) Solve ut = uxx given u ( x , 0 ) = 20, u ( 0, t) = 0, u ( 5, t ) = 100. Find u for the time
step with h = 1. (8 Marks)
ii) Solve ut = uxx given u ( 0 , t ) = u( 2, t) = 0, t < 0 and u ( x , 0) = sin(π x/2) using
h = 0.5 and k = 0.25 for two time step. (8 Marks)
c) Solve the equation y’”(x) – x y(x) = 0, where x = 0, 1/3, 2/3 given that y(0) + y’(0) =1
and y(1) = 1. (16 Marks)

d) Solve uxx + uyy = 0 in = x2 ,

e) Solve uxx + uyy = - 81xy , 0 < x < 1, 0< y <1. Given that u( 0, y) = 0, u (1,y) = 100,
u( x, 1) = 100 and h = 1/3. (16 Marks)
