1 Read the text. How many players are in a rugby match?

RUGBY
Rugby originated in 1823 when a student at a prestigious school in the town of Rugby in England picked
up the ball with his hands during a game of football and ran down the pitch. As the students started to
play this form of ‘football’ more and more frequently, they invented the rules that people still use today.

It is a sport played by two teams of 15 players with an oval-shaped ball,

like an egg. A game lasts for 80 minutes with two halves of 40 minutes.
Players score ‘tries’ by putting the ball behind the try line at one end
of the pitch. Players from the other team try to stop them by tackling
them. If a player scores a try, they can then ‘convert’ it and get more
points by kicking the ball over a high bar called the post, which is like a
giant ‘H’. The players wear a rugby shirt, shorts and special boots with
studs. Some players wear head guards on their heads.

Today, rugby is more popular than football in some parts of the world.
Men, women, girls and boys all play it. It is the national sport of both
Wales and New Zealand. The New Zealand men’s team is called the
All Blacks, and the women’s team is called the Black Ferns. The All
Blacks are famous for performing the ‘Haka’ at the beginning of their
matches. The Haka is a traditional Maori dance – the players shout and
move their arms and legs. The most important international teams are
Argentina, Australia, South Africa, England, France, Ireland, Italy, New
Zealand, Scotland and Wales. These teams and others compete for the
Rugby World Cup every four years.
