International House Mexico City Cambridge CELTA: Self Evaluation

Armando evaluated his first teaching practice (TP1). He identified areas for improvement such as using technology more effectively, having well-organized lessons with clear instructions, speaking with more accurate English, and pacing lessons appropriately. His tutor and peers provided suggestions like practicing using breakout rooms and screen sharing. He learned from observing peers' well-organized lessons and clear pronunciation teaching. Going forward, he will focus on areas like technology skills, lesson planning, and language accuracy based on this reflective feedback.

SELF EVALUATION

This is a short summary of aspects which you feel worked well and others which could be improved in your lesson.
Consider your lesson as a whole in terms of your teaching aims and learner outcomes. Also consider the specific
criteria we´re looking for at this stage of the course. Aim to complete this as soon after your lesson as possible.

Name: Armando cesar luna aguilar TP Number: 01

Lesson Aim: To provide reading practice for gist and specific information in the context of April Fool’s Day

Upon feedback and reflecting on your TP, what would you think are your Action points for the next TP?
What evidence do you have from your TP?

The evidence that I have from my TP is that trying to learn to use zoom and other apps on the spot it's not a good
idea, so I should learn to use it properly before the class, and that not having a properly organized class with
enough material to support it won't go well.

What my tutor pointed out and that I also think that I should improve was:
Trying to use more accurate English. Learning how to use the BORs. Trying to learn how to screen share better
and faster. Also, showing the Ss more slides. Giving the Ss texts and handouts via chat instead of having them
read off the screen. Setting up tasks more carefully, using the screen. 1) Showing all tasks clearly on screen; 2)
giving concise instructions; 3) asking for any questions about the questions; 4) doing a first one together (if
applicable); 5) setting a time limit; 6) checking instructions if necessary, using ICQs (instruction checking
questions). Increasing the pace by setting brisk time limits. Remembering to check the settings of the BORs before
using it.

How are you planning to achieve the above action points? What suggestions did peers or tutor give?

Learning to properly use zoom and other useful apps. Organizing my class with time limits. Preparing enough
material to show to the ss. Making a script for the class so I can check that I have all the correct use of language
and pronunciation.

The suggestions of my tutor were that I should improve the following: language models: Try to use more accurate
English. Avoid mistakes like "What does it means?" • grouping: Learn how to use the BORs for TP2. Practice with
your peers. • material use: Try to learn how to screen share better and faster. Also, show the Ss more slides e.g.
for the pre-teach stage - let them see the words on a separate slide so that they can see them more clearly. Give
the Ss texts and handouts via chat instead of having them read off the screen. *When using Google Forms,
number the Qs (it doesn't do it for you). • instructions: Set up tasks more carefully, using the screen. 1) Show all
tasks clearly on screen; 2) give concise instructions; 3) ask for any questions about the questions; 4) do a first one
together (if applicable); 5) set a time limit; 6) check instructions if necessary using ICQs (instruction checking
questions). • pace: Increase the pace by setting brisk time limits. Remember to check the settings of the BORs
before us.

He also told me that the transitions should be faster and smoother, and that I should probably practice at home
with my peers, that i should show them the instructions and vocabulary and not just read it out loud, that I should
set the timer for the breakout rooms in 10 seconds. I shouldn’t ask them to submit the answers after completing
their questionares because they wont be able to read their answers to compare them.
What did you learn from watching your peers that you could implement and use in your future TP? How
would this relate to your action points above?

They had a very well organized class and very good use of the pertinent software, they had powerpoint
presentatios wich made their calss clearer, easier to follow up for the students and organize for the teachers. The
way one of them teached pronunciation by making emphasis on the sounds of the word was very good, also I liked
how the other teacher asked them what was the stressed syllable of the words. Their fluency in English was very
good and its something that ill have to implement on the future. All of this that I learned from my fellow teachers are
the points in wich I performed poorly and that I have to seriously improve.

Thinking about your strengths, what strengths can you build upon in future TPs to continue improving
your practice?

Methodical research on grammar and pronunciation.

Overall comment on the lesson:

This was my first teaching experience of any kind and I found out that its not easy to improvise and to get
things working on the spot; it is necessary a solid preparation and understanding of the material before the
class, as well as an anticipation of doubts and problems that may occur during the class.
