I. General

This User's Manual describes the spreadsheet program for design of

Crane runway beam through ASD Design in accordance with the American
Institute of Steel Construction Manual (9th Edition).

Crane Runway beams are member subjected to Vertical, Lateral and longitudinal
forced exerted by moving loads of crane running above it. Thus regorious
analysis and design required to extract most realistic design for these beams.

Below mentioned are the checks need to be worked for effective design.
1) Check for Bending stresses
2) Check for Bi-axial bending
3) Check for combined stresses
4) Check for Shear
5) Check for deflection
6) Check for Fatigue
7) Check for Local web yield / Web crippling / Side sway buckling

A. Program Outline
1) Design Code: AISC-ASD (1990)
American Institute of Steel Construction Manual

2) Unit: SI

3) Materials

fy = yield strength of steel 34.50kN/cm2 or 24.50kN/cm2

3) Section Description
Crane beam section considered in this program has one OR two parts
1. Base Section : Built-up Plates forming either
web + bottom flange alone
or Web + both top and bottom Flanges.
2. Cap Section : UPN Channels limitted to
1. UPN 200
2. UPN 220
3. UPN 240
4. UPN 260
5. UPN 280
6. UPN 300
7. UPN 350
8. UPN 400

4) Software: Microsoft Excel '2003

6) Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP

7) Program Filename: crane beam.xls

B. Limitation of the Program

1. This program limitted to design of crane beam for Maximum
two cranes running over the beam.
2. Number of crane wheels for each crane assumed to be four.
Eight wheeled cranes shall be converted in to equivalent
four wheel crane for consevative design.
3. Sections limitted to base section with or without cap channel as specified
under A. 3.
4. Check for welds not considered.
5. Crane beam with surge girder can be designed using this program.
II. Formulas

A. Load Calculation
For single crane running over beam
1. Maximum Bending moment
If ( Wd < 0.586 L)
= P/2L ( L - (Wd/2))2 + Mself
If ( Wd > 0.586 L) a Wd P
(wheel base) (Max. wheel load)

= PL/4 + Mself

2. Maximum Shear Force

L
If ( Wd < 0.586 L) (crane beam length)

= P ( 2 - (Wd/L)) + Vself
If ( Wd > 0.586 L)
= P + Vself

3. Maximum Deflection
If ( Wd < 0.586 L)
= PL3 3C C 3
+ Dself
6EI 4L L
Where c= ( L - Wd ) / 2

If ( Wd > 0.586 L)
= PL3
+ Dself
48EI

Mself - Maximum Bending Moment due to self weight

Vself - Maximum Shear Force due to self weight
Dself - Maximum Deflection due to self weight

Note : For two Cranes Max BM, Shear and Deflection calculated
by Trial and Error method.

3. Maximum Crane Load on Column

= Px 1+ ( Bay spacing - Wd )
Bay Spacing
4. Minimum
= [(Bridge weight + Crane cap. + Hoist)/2]-[(P x 2)]
x 1 + (Bay spacing - Wd )
Bay Spacing
