[email protected] COMPLICATIONS OF CARDIAC DYSRHYTHMIA CAUSED DEATH
OF DAUPHIN COUNTY PRISON INMATE AT HOSPITAL
The Dauphin County Coroner ruled that 29-year-old Ishmail Bilah Omar Thompson died in July from
complications of cardiac dysrhythmia.
Thompson was an inmate at Dauphin County Prison when a medical emergency happened on July 23,
prompting emergency medical action and hospitalization.
Thompson died July 29 at UPMC Harrisburg hospital.
Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick ruled the manner of death as undetermined.
Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo’s Criminal Investigation Division reviewed the death and
found no evidence of physical assault.
No criminal charges will be filed.
District Attorney’s Office staff recently met with Thompson’s family to discuss the findings of the
investigation.
Thompson was arrested on July 23 for an incident at a hotel in Lower Swatara Township. Thompson
was walking nude around the hotel property and then assaulted a clerk inside the hotel. He was
charged with assault and criminal trespass.
Thompson’s erratic behavior prompted medical staff at the Dauphin County Judicial Center to have
Thompson evaluated at a hospital. Hospital staff cleared Thompson for incarceration.
At Dauphin County Prison, Thompson physically struggled with staff, punching one officer in the eye,
before he was housed in a cell.
He was being observed in a cell when he stopped breathing. Staff performed CPR and other emergency
measures before Thompson was transported to UPMC Harrisburg hospital, where he died six days
later.
