Easter Island is a small triangle of rock situated in the Pacific Ocean. It’s about 2,000
miles   the nearest city. Easter Island is   for its statues.
Hundreds of these huge, stone faces can be   all over the island. Who
made them? How  they move these giant pieces of rock? What
happened  the people who lived there? Studies show that
people   arrived on the island about 1600 years ago. They had a very
advanced culture. They made many objects and they had their  written
language. However, the number of people on the island grew and grew   
it reached about 10,000 people. Soon there were too many people and there
wasn’t  food to eat. A terrible war started and  of the statues
were broken. When western explorers   the island on Easter Day in
1722, the huge rock statues were the only sign that a great society had once lived there.

Asa Sherpa has climbed Mount Everest more times than  else in the
world.  Last year, he   the world record by climbing the world’s highest
mountain for the twenty-first time.  , he says he won’t be able to do it
again, because the mountain is becoming   dangerous to climb.
Asa first climbed the mountain   1989 at the age of 12. He worked as a
porter, carrying supplies for trekkers. When he first climbed the mountain, there
was   of snow and ice up there. Now there is much   snow,
and more bare rock.
Asa is   about the lack of snow.   snow to hold the rocks
in place, there are more rockfalls. Melting ice makes big holes, and these
make   up the mountain very dangerous. Also, climbers slip
more   on rock than on snow.
