Tutorial material data input

This tutorial is a step by step description how to enter a new material into the default database
structure (i.e. with the preset attributes when delivered)

New entry / material key

Basic attributes
Basic temperature curves
Chemical analysis
Text attributes
There are two ways to enter a new material, corresponding to the buttons “new entry” or “save as”.
New entry starts with an empty input form – all available attribute values have to be typed individu-
ally. If there is already a similar material in the database, it is always a good idea to select that ma-
terial and start the input form via “save as”.
Then you have to enter a key for new material and you can modify only those attributes which are
different.

First get into the material dialog by selecting “material

management” from the dropdown menu “modules”.
Tutorial material data input page 2 Dr. Hilger & Daniel Software GmbH

Select unit system

Before entering the sample material, please assert that the metric unit system is set (SI units).
You can switch in the dropdown menu "extras" between SI-units and US units at any time.
You might use this to convert the figures from one system into the other, for e.g. to convert Celsius
to Fahrenheit.

New entry / material key

Here we will describe a full “new entry” Then click on the button “new entry” (position P1).
The program asks for a “new material number”. This is a unique key needed for each material.
The key can consist of alphabetic and digit characters, 2 characters at least and 19 at most.
It makes sense to design a key management of short but systematically structured keys.
Please enter “NEW01”
If the key is accepted, it is displayed above the name field (pos P2). The edit cursor moves into the
name edit field.
Now enter the material name, e.g. “My Material” (pos P3)
This name will be shown together with the key in the selection list when you search for materials in
the database. Normally it is shown in printouts as well. Later on you will learn how you can suppress
the name in printouts and replace it by an alias name.

Basic technical attributes

The box "technical figures" contains a collection of technical data. Most of them can be defined by
the user and are not used for calculations. Here we fill in the figures eventually used for calculations.
We recommend to fill in at least the first three of the attributes below. (positions P4, P5, P6)

Please click on “bulk density kg/m3” (pos P4) and enter “700”
This is the density in kilogram per cubic meter.
The density is needed for: Calculating the weight and the heat content of the layers and for all kinds
of transient simulations

Next click on “porosity %” (pos P5) and enter “65”

This is the percentage of cavity which can be filled with external gas or fluid.
Needed for: Perform calculations with combustion atmosphere, esp. with H2 or vacuum

Next click on “service temperature °C” (pos P6) and enter “1350”
Needed for: To give a warning when maximum temperature is exceeded

Next click on “Young's modulus MPa" (pos P7) and enter “16000”
This is the modulus of elasticity in MPa (Mega Pascal, = Newton/mm2 = MN/m2 )
Needed for: To calculate thermal tensions only. So there is no need to enter this figure if you do not
intend to perform tension calculations.

Basic temperature curves

In SIMU-THERM three temperature dependent material properties are predefined, because they are
used for calculations:
• thermal conductivity
• specific heat capacity
• reversible thermal expansion
The rest of the temperature dependent properties in the box P8 can be defined individually by the
user in order to provide additional information.
In box P8 you can choose the curve shown in the box P9 for input.
Please select Thermal conductivity
Tutorial material data input page 3 Dr. Hilger & Daniel Software GmbH

Thermal conductivity is the most important temperature curve.

We assume the following thermal conductivity curve:
200 °C 0.25 W/mK
500 °C 0.28 W/mK
800 °C 0.34 W/mK
1100 °C 0.43 W/mK
1350 °C 0.53 W/mK

Please click into the box P9 in order to start the curve input.

The input dialog for temperature curves pops up. You will encounter this dialog in SIMU-THERM
each time when it comes to enter temperature dependent figures.
Here you can enter the temperature curve of thermal conductivity with up to 40 vertexes.
Enter "200" into the first temperature edit field. Move right into the first value filed with the tab-key or
with a mouse click. Enter ".25". Note that a line for the next vertex is opened automatically, contain-
ing a proposal for the next temperature. Move forward with the tab-key to the second temperature
and replace "400" by "500". Press the tab-key again and replace "0.2500" by ".28".
The next proposal is “800” and “0.31”. Replace “0.31” by “0.34”.
Please enter the last two vertexes in the same way. After
typing the last figure ".53" confirm the whole curve with "OK".

When a curve is complete, you should always click on

“graphic” to visualize the curve. This way you can detect
most typing errors immediately.

Recommendations
The conductivity between two vertexes is interpolated by a linear connection. So vertexes on a
straight line have no effect and can be dropped. Below the first vertex the conductivity is assumed
as constant, above the last vertex it is extrapolated. Therefore the approximation between the ver-
texes is much better than below and above the range of the curve. The user should determine the
value of the curve on the whole application range of the material or even exceed it. This way the
user can fully control the conductivity values used in the calculation.

Specific heat capacity

Specific heat capacity is needed to calculate heat content and to perform transient simulations. So it
is very useful to enter a heat capacity curve for every material. As the heat capacity of refractory
materials varies much less than their conductivity, it will be accurate enough in many cases to use
the curve of a similar material or of the main component. However, as heat capacity depends on the
temperature, a constant value instead of a curve is not accurate enough.
Here the “mean heat capacity” has to be entered which is commonly given in data sheets.
This means: heat content = heat capacity x mass x (temperature – base temperature), where the
base temperature is a constant. (e.g. base temperature = 0 °C in the metric system)

Copy a heat capacity curve

We will take the heat capacity curve from the similar material with the key “_9530”
First save the input made for the new material with the button "save".
Then press "select material“ and chose No. "_9530 - Insulation brick 700”.

Click on “Specific heat capacity” in the select box (P8). In the input box
(pos P9) the heat capacity curve appears. Click into the box (P9) in
order to get the curve dialog. In the dialog press "copy" to keep the
specific heat curve in the internal curve buffer.

Then move back to “NEW01” via "select material".

Make sure that the curve type "specific heat" is activated. (box P8)
Then click into box P9 and insert the heat capacity curve stored in the
internal buffer by clicking on “paste”.

Chemical analysis
We assume the following components of our material.
AL2O3 65
SiO2 25
CaO 5
Na2O 3
Fe2O3 1

To start he input dialog for entering the chemical analysis, click on “analysis” (pos P11)
In the dialog you find the collection of possible components in the list box on the left side.

Doubleclick on “Al2O3” , enter “65” in “analysis content of Al2O3” and confirm with “OK”.
Now you have “65.00 Al2O3” in the list box on the right side.

You can enter the other components in the same way

with no regard to their order.
When finished, close the analysis dialog with “OK”.
You should find the following string in the chemical
analysis display field:
65 Al2O3 + 25 SiO2 + 5 CaO + 3 Na2O + 1 Fe2O3
If you want to modify the percentage of a component,
open the analysis dialog again and doubleclick on the
component (right side box). To remove a compo-
nent, mark it with a single click and use the button
with the backward arrow to delete it.

Text attributes
The first three attributes in the box "material information text" (pos P11) are preset in the
executable program:
• manufacturer
• remarks 1
• remarks 2

The other attributes in the box are user-defined . Their content has no meaning to the program
apart from storing and displaying the text.

Next click on the line “manufacturer” and enter “21-01-07” as “date of material information”. This
is the latest date when the material information has been modified, e.g. the date of the manufac-
turer’s data sheet. The format of the date can be set in "print options", default is "dd.mm.yyyy".

Then you are asked for the material manufacturer. Please enter e.g. “MANUF company”.
Note that the manufacturer entered here is displayed in the material selection list. You can search
for it as a part of the material name.

Next click on “remarks 1” and enter “Sample material for a test of the material input”

The user defined attributes are entered in the same way:

Click on "Base material" and enter "alumina brick".
Click on "Type of bond" and enter "ceramic".

Additional material names

Finally click on button “table” (pos P12) to switch the large box from “material information texts” to
“additional names of the material”.

First click on the line “Mat. class” to assign a class name to the material.
Select “H_IBR insulation brick”
The main purpose is to find the new material in the list when you search for this class of materials.
In the line below you can switch the flag “use material class when printing” between “yes” and “no”.
If you choose “yes”, the material name “My Material” will be replaced by “insulation brick” in all print-
outs. The attributes in the two lines play a similar role. In SIMU-THERM you can define one or more
alias name attributes, e.g. “aliasNameEurope” and “aliasNameUSA” for the use printouts.
Thus you can assign several names to each material for different printing purposes. If necessary, it
is up to you to design a optimal name system for your company. Be aware that you have to fill the
attributes for all materials in order to make a consistent use possible.
Before printing, select the suitable name attribute in dropdown menu “options – print options – use
alias name of material in printouts”. In our case entering “2” as attribute number will cause the con-
tent of “aliasNameUSA” to be printed.
