PEOPLE & THE EARTH’S ECOSYSTEM
BSBA HRM 3-3D SEATWORK #2
A. Cite actual scenarios/examples from the Philippines that demonstrates variations of
farming techniques. You may provide pictures/drawings.
Variations of Farming:
1. Subsistence Farming
Rosita Adalim, a farmer from Malaybalay City in the province of Bukidnon who relies on
subsistence corn cultivation to survive on a daily basis.
2. Shifting Cultivation
Mangyan and Hanunuo tribes in Oriental, Mindoro manage their ancestral land
sustainably through traditional shifting cultivation, locally known as kaingin.
3. Slash and Burn Agriculture
In Aurora, Quezon burning forest areas for rice farming is rampant practice.
4. Crop Rotation
Ivatans of Batanes have adopted crop rotation as their farming practices to manage the
risk from the winds and torrential rains that batter their islands.
5. Pastoral Nomadism
Cattle Fattening in Batangas which are usually tethered along roadsides and in backyards
during the day and confined in a shed or corral at night that adequately protect animals
against the adverse effects of weather when they are raised in relatively small areas.
B. Cite actual scenarios/examples from the Philippines that tackled the environmental
impact of agriculture:
Environmental impact of agriculture:
1. Effects and costs
Based on the study conducted on banana production in Mindanao, soil analysts reported
that intensive land cultivation and overuse of chemicals gravely damaged the land of
banana growers in Davao, Philippines. Most banana companies are now said to be on the
lookout for more land because the existing plantations have become less productive
through the years, a consequence of intensive use of fertilizer and chemicals.
2. Livestock issues
The typical degraded land in Cagayan Valley due to deforestation and overgrazing.
3. Land and water issues
Decline and deterioration of watersheds in Southern Leyte and Northern Mindanao due to
excessive logging and shifting cultivation.
C. Agriculture is greatly needed in order to keep food production and sustain living. It is
undeniable as well that it has greatly impacted the environment. How do you propose to
balance the human’s need for food and protection of the environment?
The following are ways that I would propose to balance human's need for food and
protection of the environment. First, I recommend managing the use of natural resources
in a sustainable manner that will help to protect and maintain a sustainable environment.
Next, due to the fact that too many humans on the planet upset ecological balance, I
would suggest controlling the population through contraception and family planning that
will reduce the strain on the ecosystem by lessening the rate at which people consume
natural resources. In addition, create an eco-friendly environment by practicing viable
ways such as recycling and conservation to maintain the delicate balance of Earth's
ecosystem. And lastly, establish sustainable development goals that aim to meet human
needs without compromising our environment.
