Introduction
This Special Instruction provides guidelines and instructions for use of cat coolant conditioner for
aluminum components. Failure to follow any of these guidelines can result in damage.
Product Overview
Note: This special instruction applies only when an Organic Acid Technology (OAT) Extended
Life Coolant (ELC) that contains nitrites is used in aluminum core radiators. Examples of Cat
ELC and Cat ELI. This special instruction does not apply to conventional coolants similar to
Cat DEAC, or applications equipped with copper radiators.
A compatibility issue between aluminum radiators and (OAT) coolant that contains nitrites has been
detected. Aluminum radiators that have not been properly passivated will react with the nitrites in the
coolant. This reaction depletes the nitrites that are in the coolant, which reduces the ability of the
coolant to protect against cylinder liner pitting in the engine. Also, depletion of the amount of nitrites
causes the color of the coolant to fade.
Nitrites are required in Cat ELC in order to provide maximum protection against cylinder liner pitting.
In order to protect the nitrites and prevent the color from fading, Caterpillar has developed and

thoroughly tested the Cat Coolant Conditioner for Aluminum Components (CCAC). This solution is
added to the Cat ELC in a coolant system that is equipped with aluminum radiator core
The CCAC is available from your local Caterpillar dealer. Refer to Table 1 for the proper part number
and container volume.

Cat Coolant Conditioner for Aluminum Components
The following conditions require use of CCAC for aluminum core radiators:
1. The coolant changes color, which can indicate nitrate depletion. The following associated
conditions can also indicate nitrate depletion:
◦ Color of coolant fades from dark red to pink
◦ pH of coolant spikes to values above 9
◦ Coolant has noticeable ammonia odor
Submit a sample for Level 2 S·O·S coolant analysis, if coolant exhibits one or more of these
symptoms. This report from this analysis contains further instructions
Note: If questions arise whether this additive is required for a cooling system, submit a sample
for coolant analysis. The report that is generated will give instructions on what action is
required.
2. A new radiator with aluminum cores is installed.
3. Coolant is inadvertently dumped or changed. CCAC should be added if 80% or more of coolant
is replaced with the first 500 hours of radiator usage.
Dosing the Cooling System With CCAC
Determine the volume of aluminum radiator, or the volume of the cooling system. Refer to Table 2 in
order to determine the quantity and size of the bottles that are required to treat the radiator.
Note: The radiator volume is the preferred method because the value is better related to the radiator
passivation requirements.

This product can be added, only once, into a radiator that is equipped with aluminum cores. However,
a second dose is required if 80% or more of the coolant is replaced or renewed within the first 500
hours of radiator usage.
For Industrial/petroleum engines with factory assembled but not filled aluminum radiator packages,
the correct amount of dosing is shipped loose with the engine.

Application Instructions
Remove the coolant fill cap, and dispense the shipped/appropriate amount of CCAC directly into the
cooling system. Immediate operation of the engine to circulate and mix the conditioner with the
coolant is not necessary.
The chemical process that protects the nitrate in the solution will occur within 50 to 200 hours of
operation.
