07 Week 1 Course Introduction

Engineering hydrology relates to designing and operating projects to control and use water resources. It aims to develop solutions for issues caused by too much or too little water. Dams and reservoirs are used for water supply, energy creation, and flood control. Engineers must account for three key factors: 1) hydrologic uncertainty in predicting water availability, as climate change increases unpredictability; 2) economic limitations, as unlimited budgets could not make infrastructure indestructible; and 3) lack of complete theory and data to accurately predict the future or understand natural phenomena, despite using mathematical models.

Factors that Impact Hydrology

Engineers and hydrologists try and predict water

availability and use the following 3 factors that must be
accounted for:

1. Hydrologic uncertainty

As engineers and hydrologists, we’re

constantly trying to predict how much
available water we have at any given
time. As we consider this, we are faced
with uncertainty since we don’t know
what will happen tomorrow. Thus, we
use statistics to predict the future.
Climate change is impacting our
prediction as we are facing more
extreme climate events.

2. Economic limitation

Economics also play a role in design if
