phonics are a very recent development and representonly a limited part of the clari s capa-
bilities - and therefore written perforce in a Íinear manner, it is neverthelessc ceived as
a strongfy harmonic piece. That is to say,groups of notes, phrases,and musical li are to be
played not merely as a successionof notes but in terms of their harmonic implica ions. Note
groupingsare conceivedand, therefore,must be played as harmonic or even chordalareas.This
appfies particularlyto gracenotes,which must be played as fastas graceful/ypossible and heard
as harmonic arpeggiations.
