SAQ 1
Referees, crew chief, table officials, scorer, assistant scorer, timer, shot clock operator, and
commissioner are the officiating officials in basketball. Each of them has a duties and
responsibilities to perform in order to ensure the game is played safely and fairly. Also, they
provide leadership and guidance to players, ensuring that the competition is conducted in a safe
and fair manner.
Referees takes action on disciplinary reasons as well and maintains the order of the game.
When a team, player or any other person behaves in an improper manner, then it’s the referee
who decides whether it’s a misconduct or not and penalize accordingly. Crew chief have the final
say or call in a game and have the authority to set aside or question decisions regarding a rule
interpretation made by either of the other officials. Table officials maintain high levels of
concentration, particularly towards the end of quarters of play and in the final two minutes of the
game. The scorers shall record the field goals made, the free throws made and missed and shall
keep a running summary of the points scored. The assistant scorer shall operate the scoreboard
and constantly assist the scorer and timer. The timers shall note when each half is to start and
shall notify the crew chief and both coaches five minutes before this time, or cause them to be
notified at least five minutes before the half is to start. Shot clock operator control a separate
timing device with a horn that shall have a sound that is distinct and different from that of the
game-clock horn. The Commissioner assist the Crew Chief and Umpires in the smooth running of
the game.
SAQ 2
Officials play a crucial part in the organization of competitions. They give
participants with leadership and supervision, ensuring that the competition is run
safely and fairly. This covers how they act and interact with others before, during,
and after the competition, as well as how they present themselves as an official and
carry out their duties. Officials are accountable for their words and deeds. People
anticipate the official to be a reliable source of information on the tournament. The
sports official is a role model who is charged with enforcing the concepts of fair play
and good sportsmanship. It provides a unique opportunity to positively influence
young people. Officiating affords an individual the opportunity to develop
interpersonal skills and to hone one's judgment skills.
SAQ 3
For me, verbal abuse from spectators is one of the challenges that can be encounter
in officiating basketball. Verbal and physical abuse of game officials and poor sportsmanship
by spectators has led to a shortage of referees, leading leagues and states legislatures to
enact rules of conduct and criminalize assaults. The referee keeps players playing fair
through bringing a non-biased opinion onto the field, and without a referee, players may
resort to getting their way in a sport, such as soccer, through foul play. Additionally, the
referees are judged harshly by spectators, and which can cause a large problem at the
youth levels of sports. Unfortunately, with this responsibility of keeping the game fair, the
referees are often looked down upon by spectators.
To solve this, communication and being confident are the solution. Don’t be afraid to
call a player in just to explain your decision. Just make sure that the player is calmer when
they leave you. You might be feeling the pressure when players and spectators don’t like
your decision, but remaining confident about your decision tells everyone you know what
you’re doing.
