On-Grid Solar Systems

Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules generate electricity from sunlight. Using an
electronic device called an inverter; this electricity can be fed into the mains electrical
supply of a building, or directly into the public electricity grid. Grid-connected PV
systems therefore cut the use of electricity from
fossil fuel and nuclear sources, with its
associated pollution. They can also help boost
inadequate grid supplies.

-connected PV systems work

PV modules use semiconductor materials to

generate dc electricity from sunlight. A large
area is needed to collect as much sunlight as possible, so the semiconductor is either
made into thin, flat, crystalline cells, or deposited as a very thin continuous layer onto
a support material. The cells are wired together and sealed into a weatherproof module,
with electrical connectors added. Modern modules for grid connection usually have
between 48 and 72 cells and produce dc voltages of typically 25 to 40 volts, with a rated
output (see box) of between 150 and 300 W.
In order to supply electricity into a mains electricity system, the dc output from the
module must be converted to ac at the correct voltage and frequency. An electronic
inverter is used to do this. Generally a number of PV modules are connected in series
to provide a higher dc voltage to the inverter input, and sometimes several of these

more modules. Modern inverters are very efficient (typically 97%), and use electronic

9
Cutting edge technology for Power & electrical systems

control systems to ensure that the PV array keeps working at its optimum voltage. They
also incorporate safety systems as required in the country of use.

How grid-connected PV systems are used

Many grid connected PV systems are installed on frames, which are mounted on the
roof or walls of a building. Used in this way the PV does not take up land that could be
used for other purposes. Ideally the PV faces
towards the equator (i.e. South in the northern
hemisphere) but the exact direction is not critical.
However, it is important to make sure that there is
minimal shading of the PV. The inverter is housed
inside the building and connected to the mains
electrical supply, usually with a meter to measure the kWh generated. If the PV
electricity production exceeds building demand then the excess can be exported to the
grid, and vice versa.

What are the benefits of grid-connected PV systems?

By reducing the need for fossil-fuel generation, grid-connected PV cuts greenhouse

gas emissions (and other air pollution), because no emissions are produced during PV
operation.

the manufacture of PV systems, particularly in the production of ultra-pure

semiconductors. With current production techniques, these embodied greenhouse gases
are saved within two to four years of use of grid-connected operation, depending on the
amount of sunlight.

PV is the easiest renewable electricity source to incorporate into buildings.

The electricity is supplied at the point of use. It can be used at any scale from less than
a kW on an individual home up to MW scale systems on large public buildings and is
simple and reliable. Because of this, it is a valuable way to raise awareness of electricity
supply and use, and helps highlight the potential for renewable energy.

Off-Grid Solar Systems

OFF GRID refers to a power system that generates
electricity such as power from a Solar PV array. The
electricity produced is stored in Batteries for later use
and the energy system is not connected to the utility
Power Grid.

In the Developing World, where there is abundant sunlight and a large rural population
without the proper infrastructure to develop an electrical grid, PV is very attractive

10
Cutting edge technology for Power & electrical systems

option because of its modular features, its ability to generate electricity at the actual
point of use, its low maintenance
requirements and its non-polluting
technologies. PV is also important to rural
health clinics in developing countries.
These clinics require electricity for lighting,
vaccine refrigeration and water pumping
and purification. PV has proven to be a
reliable system for these isolated clinics. Even If you live in urban areas where grid is
serving only a part of your requirement or facing power disruption and power outage
then it is a good option to install OFF GRID solar power system to fulfill your power
requirement when needed.

Hoval energy
Hoval has a long tradition of using solar energy. As a leader in pioneering
technologies for heat generation, Hoval introduced its
first solar energy systems in 1975. Continuous product
development has placed the company among the leading
suppliers of solar thermal energy systems today.

As a forerunner and trendsetter in new technologies for efficient heat generation, it is

not surprising that Hoval invests a significant portion of its revenue in research &
development. This practice ensures that Hoval can continue to offer its customers
technically sophisticated solar products along with the expertise to provide system
solutions that efficiently and economically integrate solar energy systems into heating
systems. Hoval leads the way by intelligently linking all of the system components:
generating heat from the clean energy of the sun, producing hot running water and
keeping interiors warm all from a single source.

Solar thermal collector(UltraSol)

The new UltraSol product range is a Hoval innovation that is designed to meet today's
requirements for top quality, maximum efficiency and easy installation. UltraSol offers
two types of collectors (UltraSol and UltraSol eco),
each of which is available in both a horizontal and a
vertical design. They have been designed to have an
exceptionally low construction height and weight
very little. Thanks to the installation system and
plug-and-play hydraulic kits, all the collectors are
suitable for any method of installation

Compact systems allow solar installations to be integrated very easily and

inexpensively. The systems are available for both solar water heating and heating
backup supplies. With these in place, the sun provides up to 80% of the energy for water
heating and up to 50% of the energy for heating backup supplies.

The modular concept, flexible installation options and hydraulics make UltraSol the
ideal solution for a vast range of different requirements. Whether it takes the form of a
smaller water heating system in a single family home or a large scale installation for
industrial use, the UltraSol really is suitable for
anything.

Water heating (CombiSol)

The CombiSol combination storage tank is a
buffer storage tank with a set of solar fittings and

12

integrated water heater. As is usual in dual storage tank systems, it ensures a constant
and reliable supply of hot water.

The central component of this system solution

is the VarioVal, a compact buffer storage tank
with an integrated instantaneous water heater that
has all its technical components already built in,
including a TopTronic control for operating the
solar installation and heating system. In this
system, fresh hot water is not produced until it is needed, making it particularly suitable
in cases where the level of water demand is irregular and variable. It is also ideal for
applications where it is especially important to produce fresh hot water.
