Greetings of peace.

The Shrine has a number of employment openings for laypeople. Please think about people that you know who might
enjoy working here and let them know about the opportunity. Sacristan is the person in charge of the sacristy and its
contents, such as the sacred vessels and vestments. This person also assists with hospitality and the management of the
cash collections in church. This is a 30-hour-a-week position with full benefits. Other positions that are open:
Security/concierge (part-time), Information Booth Attendant (full or part-time), Maintenance Technician (full-
time), Prep Cook in the kitchen (part-time). We also need volunteers at the Masses: people who are willing and able to
be Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. Please contact me at [email protected], or Human Resources at
[email protected], if you are interested in any of these opportunities. Thank you for any help that you can give us
with this endeavor of finding additional people to be on the Shrine team.

The Catholic Church celebrates a number of feast days during September. Taken as a whole, they call to mind the
richness of the tradition of our faith. During these days, we recognize the witness of faith, sacrifice and mystic beauty of
the Church.

In addition to the liturgical calendar, we have a diverse events calendar at the Shrine. Here are some of the things that
are going on…

On July 9, we hosted a one-day retreat for the Emmaus Ministry. We occasionally have these events for parents who
have lost children to death, for any reason and at any age. It is an opportunity for these parents to prayerfully reflect on
this sad event with people who have experienced the same thing. Parents share coping skills and support one another
going forward. We are grateful for those who worked on this July retreat: Diane and Charley Monaghan, and Shrine
friars Joe Quinn, Paul Keenan, and Chris Coccia. For more information about this ministry, please contact Diane at
[email protected].

On July 29, The Boston Center for Youth & Families, Gallivan site in Mattapan, formally recognized the Shrine’s work.
We have partnered with this wonderful organization on a number of programs and will continue to so.

From August 8-11, I celebrated Mass at the Poor Clare Monastery in Jamaica Plain. For the Feast of St. Clare on the
11th, we were joined by Fr. Joe Quinn, OFM. Fr. Joe and I enjoyed being with the Sisters and the worship community in
Jamaica Plain for that important Franciscan feast day.

On August 27, Br. James LaGrutta, OFM, professed his solemn vows as a Franciscan at our Church on 31 st Street in
Manhattan. Many of the friars here at the Shrine attended this celebratory Mass. Congratulations, Br. James!

On August 29, we had our monthly luncheon for Veterans. Among the volunteer workers present that day were retired
BPD Superintendent Gerard Bailey and his wife Rita, William Dickerson who is the Faith-Based Community Liaison for
the City of Boston, Brianna Millor who is Mayor Michelle Wu’s Chief of Community Engagement, Boston City Council
President Ed Flynn, A1 BPD Captain Robert Ciccolo, Veterans Gerry Hayes, John McMann and Ed Collins and
Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Tom Kelley.

On August 30, Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, Guardian at the Shrine, presided at the daily Mass on Catholic TV. Fr. Frank is
something of a regular on this network. Clips of his homilies can be found on Catholic TV’s YouTube channel.
On August 31, I attended an event at St. Patrick in Nashua NH. It was a planning event intended to stir ministerial
initiatives in the parish. My role was to talk about some of the work of the St. Anthony Shrine, and share the reasons for
our recent successes. For me, it was inspirational to be in an out-of-state church community trying to grow and spread the
Gospel in a thoughtful and strategic manner.

On September 1, Mary Ann Ponti, the Shrine’s Director of Outreach and Community Engagement, was among several
people recognized for exceptionally good work in the community. The recognition was at the Patriots Premier Night, an
annual event in Foxborough at the beginning of the season to celebrate the great work the Robert and Myra Kraft Family
Foundation. We are thankful to Al Spignola (of SGA Architects) for hosting the Shrine at this event.

Shrine Labor Day Raffle winners are listed here. First Prize, $10,000, Dominic Bisignado, Boston MA; Second Prize,
$4,000, David and Elaine Deskins, Quincy MA; Third Prize, $3,000, Patricia Franke, Bourne MA; Fourth Prize, $1,000,
Terrence R. Gallagher, Arlington MA. Congratulations to the winners. We thank all of you who participated.

On the weekend of September 10-11, we continue our tradition of remembering those who died in the 2001 tragedy of
9/11. The names of the deceased will be on a banner that hangs outside of the building on Arch Street. We pray for the
deceased and for all those who mourn them.

September is National Recovery Month. Please plan to join us next Friday, Sept. 9, at 6pm for a new documentary on the
life of Fr. Mychal Judge, OFM, Remembering Mychal. Our recovery center bears his name. Fr. Mychal’s recovery
empowered him to share himself with all those whom he encountered. When terrorists attacked our country on Sept. 11,
2001, Fr. Mychal was serving as the chaplain for the NYFD. He was the first officially recorded death of the attack on
Sept. 11, 2001.

On Wed. Sept. 14, at 6 pm, we will host 12-Step Spirituality: A conversation on the role of spirituality in recovery. There
will be a Recovery Mass: A liturgy to celebrate recovery on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 pm, in the second floor church. All
are welcome. For more information about any of these events, please contact Anthony Andreottola, Director of the
Fr. Mychal Judge Recovery Center, at 617-542-6440 ext. 183, or Fr. Jay Woods, OFM, at [email protected].
Thank you, Anthony and Fr. Jay, for your great work with this.

St. Anthony Shrine is proud to host a live performance of St. Luke Productions’ Tolton: From Slave to Priest on Monday,
Sept. 26, at 7 pm, in the second-floor church. Jim Coleman will play the role of Fr. Augustus Tolton, the first African-
American priest. Admission is free. The website for this production company says that Mr. Coleman “is excited and
honored to be playing the role of Fr. Tolton. Prior to his acting career, he served in the US Army as a medic. Having
appeared in more than 50 national commercials, Jim is best known for his role of Roger Parker in the hit Nickelodeon
show My Brother and Me. ‘Fr. Tolton's story needs to be told,’ says Jim. ‘As a black man, this very important part of
history is something that I want the world to hear about. I truly feel blessed to be the one to share Fr. Augustus Tolton with
all who will listen!’ Jim and his wife Robin reside in Florida; they are the proud parents of six children.”

The Pope Francis Award: Pope Francis chose the name “Francis,” in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who was a man of poverty, a
man of peace, and one who loved and protected creation. The Pope Francis Award is presented to an individual whose lifework
mirrors the charism and mission of St. Francis of Assisi, lover of the poor and the alienated. It honors one who embodies the
Franciscan values of humility, compassion, respect and dignity of all people, and lives out the Gospel.
