Infancy
What comes to your mind
when you hear the word infant?
Infant
-Infant comes from the Latin word infans,
meaning 'unable to speak' or 'speechless
-The period of life between birth and
acquisition of language approximately one
to two years later.
-The state or period of early childhood or
babyhood.
Did you know?
The average newborn weighs about 7.5
pounds. Most infants range between 6 and 9
pounds at birth.
Most newborns are 19 to 21 inches in length
or on average about 20 inches at birth.
While we may notice changes
on their body, incredible
growth is taking place within
the brain.
The brain is 25 percent its adult
weight at birth, but by age 2 it
has grown to 75 percent of its
adult weight.
Newborn typically sleep for about 16-18
hours a day
The first tooth usually erupts at about six months. By the
end of the first year, six teeth usually have erupted-four
upper incisors and two lower incisors.
The ideal food for young infant is human milk,
The newborn’s senses are not equally
developed at birth. Vision is the least
developed sense at birth.
Newborns can only focus on objects between 8
and 16 inches away. And they have trouble
scanning objects and tracking moving objects
visually.
Motor development refers to movement. When we are born, we are equipped with a
number of automatic responses to stimuli known as reflexes. These include a sucking
reflex, the rooting reflex which involves an infant turning the head toward anything that
touches the cheek, and a palmar grasp, strongly clasping the hand around anything
touching the palm.
Fine motor skills are smaller, more precise
movements of the hand and fingers. These
take longer to acquire as they involve being
able to coordinate the hand and eye and being
able to manipulate the hands to grab and
move small objects.
Sensorimotor Intelligence Stage
in Piagetian theory, knowledge that is obtained from
sensory perception and motor actions involving objects in
the environment. This form of cognition characterizes
children in the sensorimotor stage.
There are 6 stages of sensorimotor
intelligence
stage 1: Simple Reflexes 0-1 month
stage 2: Primary Circular Reactions 1-4 months
Stage 3: Secondary Circular Reaction 4-8 months
Stage 4: Purposeful Coordination of Secondary Schemes 8-12 months
Stage 5: Tertiary Circular Reaction 12-18 months
Stage 6: Beginnings of Thought 18-24 months
Stage 1: Simple Reflexes 0-1 month
-Proficiency at sucking, grasping
-Lack ability to deliberately suck or grasp
Stage 2:Primary Circular Reactions 1-4 months
Repetition of pleasurable behaviorwhich occurs by chance
Stage 3:Secondary Circular Reaction 4-8 months
-Repetition of pleasurable behavior which occurs by chance, but involves
deliberate manipulaton of object in environment.
stage 4: Purposeful Coordination of Secondary Schemes 8-12
months
-Combinations of action (learning and grasping) (looking, craling, and
grasping)
stage 5:Tertiary Circular Reaction 12-18 months
-Exploration using ne novel actions
-Formation of trial and error discovery
stage 6:Beginnings of Thought 18-24 months
-Thinking about problem to develope solution
-Internalization of trial and error
-Accompanied by language formation
Our parents deserve our honor and respect for giving
us life itself. Beyond this they almost always made
countless sacrifices as they cared for and nurtured us
through our infancy and childhood, provided us with
the necessities of life, and nursed us through physical
illnesses and the emotional stresses of growing up.
