Memory Test:

In the space below, answer the following questions in two to three sentences.

1. What is the difference between the historic Rizal and symbolic Rizal?

- The difference between the historic Rizal and the symbolic Rizal is that the historic Rizal is the

history we all know where in Rizal living out his life and being killed at Luneta and that because of

his execution, Filipinos started a revolution to overthrow the Spanish colonizers, and the Symbolic

Rizal is the one we use to show what a Filipino and what a hero is thus making him a symbol of

hope for us Filipino.

- The historical Rizal was Jose Rizal, a polymath, skilled in both Science and the arts. This Philippine

patriot, writer, and poet were executed by the Spanish Colonial Authorities in 1896 for dazzling and

insulting the authorities with his liberal political ideas and fights with the pen.

- The symbolic Rizal represents all that Jose Rizal stood for, including nationalism, democracy,

political liberalism, free expression, heroism, and especially his iconic symbol: “a pen is mightier

than the sword”

2. What is a text? A sign? A symbol?

 TEXT – in literature, a text is any object that can be read, whether this object is a work of

literature, a street sign, an arrangement of buildings on a city block, or styles of clothing. It is a

coherent set of signs that transmits some kind of informative message.

 SIGN – a sign is anything that communicates a meaning that is not the sign itself to the

interpreter of the sign. The meaning can be intention such as a word uttered with specific

meaning, or unintentional, such as a symptom is a sign of a particular medical condition.

 SYMBOL – are often characters, settings, images, or other motifs that stand in for bigger ideas.

Authors often use symbols or symbolism to give their work more meaning and to make a story

be about more than the events it describes.

3. What instances in the past show that Rizal’s image was manipulated by people?

- An instance that shows Rizal’s image was manipulated is where Andres Bonifacio addressed Rizal

as the honorary president of the secret society, by often, leaving a picture of Rizal hanging during

the meetings of the Katipunan.
