Goddio’s Discovery
In 2000 underwater archaeologist Dr. Franck Goddio set off on an expedition. He was looking
for shipwrecks off the coast of Egypt, near Alexandria. In his attempt to find shipwrecks, he
discovered something much more important—remains of the lost city of Heracleion.
Until this discovery, many people didn’t believe the city existed at all. Yet, Dr. Franck Goddio’s
expedition found ships, gold coins, statues, stone carvings, and even a temple that disappeared
1,200 years ago.
Also, the many underwater canals at the site proved that the city used to be a very important
place for trade. Experts think that Heracleion used to control all the shipping through Egypt.
Archaeologists still have to examine a lot more of the city. They hope this will help them find out how
the average residents of Heracleion used to live.
