ADDITION OF INTEGERS
Worksheet # _____
Learning Competency:________________________
Learning Code:______________________________
If two positive integers are to be added, their sum is positive. If two negative
integers are to be added, their sum is negative. If positive and negative integers are added,
the sum is obtained by subtracting their absolute values. The sign of the sum follows that of
the added with the greater absolute value.
Examples:
-4 + (-5) = -9 -5 + 8 = 3
8 + 7 = 15 -11 + 4 = -7
In adding 3 or more integers, you may add from left to right or you may combine
first the integers with the same sign.
Method 1: Method 2:
(-7) + 10 + (-8) (-7) + 10 + (-8)
3 + (-8) (-15) + 10
-5 -5
A. Find the sum quickly:
1) -4 + (-3) _______________ 6) (-6) + (-4) _______________
2) -5 + 9 _______________ 7) 3 + (-8) _______________
3) 12 + (-3) _______________ 8) -15 + 7 _______________
4) 3+ (-11) _______________ 9) 25 + (-32) _______________
5) -8 + (-13) _______________ 10) -45 + 17 _______________
B. Find the value of n to make the statement TRUE.
1) 5 + n = 3 _______________ 6) 12 + n = -2 _______________
2) (-4) + n = -11 _______________ 7) -8 + n = -4 _______________
3) (-6) + 15 = n _______________ 8) n + -5 = 10 _______________
4) (-8) + n = -25 _______________ 9) -15 + n = -4 _______________
5) 12 + n = 0 _______________ 10) 24 + n = -9 _______________
C. Add the integers
1) (-2) + (-11) + (-8) _________ 6) 9 + (-5) + (-6) _________
2) -6 + 12 + (-15) _________ 7) 16 + 8 + 4 _________
3) 11 + (-12) + (-8) _________ 8) 12 + (-43) + 21 _________
