CEP10L ProbSet 2

This document contains instructions for a hydraulics laboratory problem set involving hydrostatic forces. Students are asked to solve 6 situations involving calculating forces on various gates, dams, and floating bodies due to hydrostatic pressure. They are to show all work and solutions on letter-sized paper with page numbers and include a cover page with their names, problem set title, and date.

CEP10 HYDRAULICS LABORATORY

1ST SEMESTER AY 2022-2023

PROBLEM SET 2: HYDROSTATIC FORCES
Lab Instructor: S. Valle

INSTRUCTIONS
1) Present the complete solution to each problem. Include reference diagrams, and indicate all units of
measurement.
2) Write the solutions on a LETTER SIZE bond paper, with margins 1.5” on the left, and 1.0” on the rest.
3) Indicate the page numbers on the lower right hand corner of each sheet, including the total number of sheets
submitted, e.g. ⅗.
4) Use ENGINEERING LETTERING.
5) The cover page should bear the (i) title of the problem set, (ii) names of each member of the group and their
contribution, (iii) section, (iv) date of submission. See the sample at the last page.

Situation 1. The upper edge of a vertical trapezoidal gate is 1.60 m long and flush with the water surface. The two
edges are vertical and measure 2 m and 3 m respectively. Calculate the force and location of the center of pressure
(with respect to the seawater surface) on one side of the gate.

Situation 2. Circular gate ABC is 4 m in diameter and hinged at B. Compute the:

1) force of water on the gate
2) force P just sufficient to keep the gate from opening.
3) reactions at the hinge

Situation 3. The gate, 4 ft wide, is hinged at point B. Determine the:

1) force of water on the left side of the gate
2) force of oil (sg = 0.85) on the right side of the gate
3) horizontal force P applied at A to keep the gate closed. Indicate the direction of P

Situation 4. The corner of a floating body has a quarter cylinder AB having a length normal to the paper of 5 ft.
Calculate the magnitude and location of the components of the force on AB with respect to A.

Situation 5.

Situation 6. A masonry dam weighs 23.5 kN/m 3. The coefficient of friction between its base and the foundation is
0.60. If the uplift pressure varies uniformly from full hydrostatic at the heel to full hydrostatic at the toe, find:
1) the factor of safety against sliding
2) the factor of safety against overturning
3) the location where there resultant intersects the base
4) the stress distribution at the foundation, in kPa
