Stars," likewise features a love triangle. We're going

Author’s Background
Paz Marquez Benitez

 Born in 1894 in Lucena City, Quezon, Marquez -


Benitez authored the first Filipino modern English-
language short story, Dead Stars, published in the
Philippine Herald in 1925.
 Born into the prominent Marquez family of Quezon
province, she was among the first generation of
Filipinos trained in the American education system
which used English as the medium of instruction.
 She graduated high school in Tayabas High School
(now, Quezon National High School) and college from
the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of
Arts degree in 1912. She was a member of the first
freshman class of the University of the Philippines,
graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912.
 her work is considered the first modern Philippine short
story. When her husband died in 1951, she took over as
editor of the Philippine Journal of Education at UP. She
held the editorial post for over two decades

Dead Stars
 The first Filipino short story written in English.
 Published on the Philippines Herald, the first daily
newspaper in the country, in 1925.
 A short story of an over thirty years old bachelor,
Alfredo Salazar who was about to get married to his
fiancée, Esperanza. His love and passion for his fiancé
started getting fade as he was attracted to another
woman named Julia Salas.
Let us all discover the story of the “Dead Stars.” and apply
your learning on our past lesson about the elements of the story by
watching this Video. Later on, we will have our group activity so
listen carefully.

Alfredo defended Calixta because he can relate to what
Calixta had done. They had the same mistake that’s why he
can defended Calixta.

C. What was the conflict and how was it resolved?


The conflict is external because it shows man versus
circumstances. Alfredo struggles to face his problems in
choosing between difficult choices of his life (his engagement
with Esperanza and his love for Julia Salas). The conflict was
resolved by Alfredo’s decision to finally marry Esperanza
and let go of Julia Salas.
