SPEECH ON SOLUTIONS TO BATTLE INEQUALITIES WHICH
HINDER SOCIAL WELL-BEING IN ECONOMIES
Yes, thank you secretary. Proceeding, as the final representative of MSE, I would
like to add a few points to what our secretary mentioned and elaborate further
on the topic of our concern.
Inequality, the depriver of social well-being has to be given the coup final
someday. Until then, we the MSE, continue to evolve and assist our brothers and
sisters who are facing this crisis right at this moment. To fulfill the vision of our
organization, we engaged ourselves in extensive research to extract the cream by
the centrifugation of various solutions we derived analytically. My main focus will
be on solutions to economic and political inequalities that hinder social well-
being.
Firstly on economic inequalities. Our organization is based in Sri Lanka. Since the
number of vagrants are increasing rapidly these days and the concept of “The
Rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer “becoming the norm in our
country, we thought of creating jobs and provide concessions for the
underprivileged by investing in infrastructure, developing renewable energy
sources, improving living standards including access to quality health facilities and
renovating abandoned housing.
Using the funds that we received, we invested in abandoned lands in areas like
Hirana, Panadura, Yakgasmulla and Bandarawela and with the support of
generous donors, revitalized those areas by increasing affordable housing
investments.
We also can improve the job quality and strengthen many families by raising the
minimum daily wage up to 1000/= by 2025 and ensure pay equity.
By enacting basic labour standards such as paid sick and family leave, fair and
square overtime rules, right to request flexible time schedules, we can foster
social well-being favorably in economies.
We have also sent official letters to the government departments connected in
this field requesting to apply stricter monetary and fiscal policies to achieve full
employment. Especially to make the tax code work better for low-income families
and providing unemployment insurance programs.
We also suggest that the education system should be revised and subjects like
Accounting concerned with financial literacy be made mandatory. One of the
reasons why many people fail in life is due to their lack of knowledge in financial
literacy. We should not work for money; it is money that should work for us. By
conducting workshops for the youth, we can attain this goal.
The MSE believes that every child, despite their differences, has the right to
educate themselves. Targeting this, we can invest in human capital by expanding
access to high-quality affordable child care and early education, creating
pathways to good jobs, and national service opportunities.
We also collaborate with certain financial institutes with authority to close tax
loopholes that benefit the wealthy, ensure that profitable cooperations
contribute their fair share and reform the disproportionate taxes that benefit the
Rich and detriment the poor.
Secondly, we came up with a valid solution to tackle political inequalities. Political
inequality has resulted in the suppression of many fundamental human rights,
lack of transparency to the public, exploiting the media and power inequality.
Therefore, to establish political equality, we must revive the system of
representative democracy effectively, particularly higher electoral participation
across all classes and social groups. The power of governors should be curtailed
and expanded participation of the citizens are required to overcome challenges
from concentrations of wealth, access and power.
Sometimes you may be wondering as to why our organization had to undertake
such complex measures considering the fact we are just a non-governmental not-
for-profit organization. Yeah... Why?
Members of the audience, we the MSE strongly believe that we deserve the sole
position on the international board of organizations in order to empower the
voiceless, trigger a monumental change and create a sustainable peaceful future
for the generations to come. Our conference has officially come to an end now. I
hereby take the opportunity to thank you all for your time and conclude my
speech.
